Putting bait on a hook, learning to adjust tangled fishing lines and balancing on a rocking boat helps Veterans with fine motor control. Fishing also teaches Veterans new coping skills that can replace unhealthy options like alcohol and drugs.
“Having made over 1,500 blankets so far for veterans, I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon,” said Thornton, who is 83-years-old, and donates the lap blankets or lap throws to Veterans at VA Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System.
