Veterans from across the country came this week to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials and monuments dedicated to their service. The occasion is especially meaningful, and VA is honored to play a role in the Veterans Day observances.

“The Department of Veterans Affairs honors the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve today at duty stations around the globe, and who have served in years past with the same unwavering commitment to protect all that we hold dear.” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie during his Veterans Day message. “This is our noble mission, and we consider it a sacred duty.”

Throughout the day, ceremonies and events commemorated the importance of service and how the United States values those who served our nation in uniform. Started as Armistice Day to honor World War I Veterans, Congress changed the name in 1954 to Veterans Day to honor American Veterans of all wars.
