VA’s Business Conference and Hiring Fair: Putting Vets Back to Work

The National Veteran Small Business Conference is fast approaching, along with the associated Veteran Hiring Fair and VA Open House. From June 26-29, thousands of Veterans will gather in Detroit’s Cobo Center for the three VA-hosted events below.

The National Veteran Small Business Conference

As the premier event, the National Veteran Small Business Conference will help Veteran-owned businesses maximize opportunities in the federal marketplace. Veteran entrepreneurs will connect with Federal procurement decision makers from across Government, and over 200 training sessions will focus on things like business requirements and acquisition forecasting. Veteran Hiring Fair

Over 16,000 VA, federal, and private-sector jobs across the country will be up for grabs at the free Veteran Hiring Fair June 26-28. After you sign up online, you can request a customized coaching session to help you build a strong resume and prepare for interviews.  You can schedule interviews with employers that are looking to fill jobs on the spot or soon after the event. Veteran Open House

At last year’s business conference, the Veteran Open House got hundreds of Vets into VA’s system on the spot, and it’ll be bigger and better this year. From June 26-28, VA employees will be standing by to enroll Veterans in healthcare, provide onsite exams, and provide information on other benefits and services available to Veterans, families, and survivors. If you register for the Hiring Fair, you will automatically gain entry into the open house. More info | Sign up

These three co-located events are a great opportunity for Veterans get back on track after time in service, get enrolled in the VA system and embark on a meaningful new career. If you’re able to make the trip, we hope you come in, get enrolled, and walk away with a job you deserve.

    I am 100% disabled, age 72 and want to work. I would like to work in or around Paris, Texas and there are plenty of jobs. But I am “over qualified,” “over 40,” “not the right person for the job,” “male,” or some other dumb, lame, excuse.

      I’ve had to deal a long time with an Inadequate V.A. and disability. What I’ve learned? Go find a benign job. Isn’t Paris near Tyler, the Rose Capital? Go work with plants. They don’t talk back. Tell them you may be over-qualified for the line, but that’s the way to become a better manager in the future.

      Find out what “incentives” the government can offer the employer and put them out front in the interview.

      And, find out if the military offers any legal council to help with discriminationtion. Remember, you have at least a 10 point advantage on applying for government jobs.

      Get pills for your temper/attitude. It takes time to find the right mix. I finally landed on Cymbalta (full dose) and Welbutrin (a little kicker for other parts of the brain).

      My brother works for a company called NISH in Kennesaw, GA. It places handicapped vets in jobs or even helps them to start companies and then be placed with military places.

      Good luck. If you snap, make sure you don’t snap on innocent civilians.

      If you go to the VAforVETS.va.gov site where you can upload your federal resume and view positions of interest. You can also contact your Regional Veteran Employment Coordinator for your area on the site also. They are Veterans who work for the VA helping Veterans get VA jobs.

    Our company has helped other federal agencies run virtual hiring conferences. As a veteran myself, I see tremendous upside in being able to deliver nearly the same experience to a community of veterans that are not able to attend [for one reason or another] the live event. If there is anyone from the VA monitoring this chat, please do not hesitate to touch base. I will do my due diligence and grind through calls into the VA to talk about our experience – and help it can greatly impact your steadfast efforts.

    I am going back to school to finish my BS in Construction Science. I will be 52 when I finish. Is this going to get me a job or am I just fooling myself. I have a CDL but it just sucks driving a truck with my PTSD. I need a job that pays 1000 a week. I will also be getting a a 2 year Certificate in Residential Electrician. I will move to anywhere once I graduate. Hell I lived in my car for 2 weeks in Jan in ND driving a water truck already this year. I would really like to hear from an HR manager to tell it to me straight…no holding back, just tell me the “F”ing truth!
