This month we chatted with one of our National Healthcare Recruitment Consultants, Mike Naccarato, who is also a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He works to recruit physicians, nurses and other clinical professionals for critical, hard-to-fill roles in Arizona and New Mexico. We asked him to answer a few questions potential candidates may have before applying to a position at VA.

 If someone said they were interested in working for VA, what would you tell them?

It would be the best move they could make. I’ve been with VA since August of 2012, and for about 8 years prior to that I was in the private sector. If I could do it all over again, I would’ve joined VA right out of the Air Force. There is no better satisfaction than helping our nation’s veterans.

 

What is something VA can offer that other health care systems cannot?

More quality time with patients. For example, VA Primary Care Physicians see approximately 8-13 patients a day, whereas physicians in the private sector see 30-35 on average. Not only does this mean more quality time for patient care, but also more time for administrative duties. You won’t deal with insurance issues or corporate financial goals and you’ll have a satisfying work/life balance.

 

What are qualities you look for during over-the-phone interviews?

Personality is one quality at the top of my list as well as stability in their employment history. I like to have a casual conversation and I listen carefully to make sure they are very personable and passionate, while also making sure they will work well in a team setting. I make sure their history and interests match the hiring manager’s requirements so I only refer top candidates.

Are there any common misperceptions about working at VA that you’d like to clear up? 

I want physicians to know that the recruitment process is not a long and difficult experience. Our national recruiters can facilitate the recruitment and onboarding process to keep you well informed where you are in the process every step of the way. If a vacancy does not currently exist in your geographic region, we’ll keep your CV on file and contact you when one becomes available.

 

What’s one of your favorite parts of working at VA?

The satisfaction that comes with bringing a new employee on board! When clinical hiring managers and candidates have a successful and positive experience in the recruitment and onboarding process, it’s rewarding that I was able to help facilitate the process.
