VA will begin Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations this week at 128 additional sites.

On Dec. 18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which is the second COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized.

“Having a second COVID-19 vaccine will enable us to reach more facilities and vaccinate more health care personnel and Veterans in additional parts of the country,” said VA Secretary Robert L. Wilkie. “We continue to implement our COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Plan and are grateful to be one step closer to seeing the end of this pandemic.”

Per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, VA will continue to vaccinate health care personnel, as well as community living center and spinal cord unit residents. As vaccine supplies increase, VA’s ultimate goal is to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to all Veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.

113 VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) and outpatient clinics will receive limited Moderna COVID-19 vaccine supplies this week. They include:

Sites were identified based on need for the vaccine according to CDC’s 1a prioritization and after confirming they could appropriately store the vaccine at -20C. Since the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine remains stable in regular refrigeration, VA expects to distribute it to more facilities when supplies are available.

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine was 94% effective in preventing COVID-19 disease, based on scientific data presented at FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biologics Advisory Committee on December 17. The vaccine is administered in two doses, 28 days apart. The side effects appear similar to those of other vaccines and are short-lived.

Thirty-seven medical centers began offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to eligible health care personnel and Veterans Dec 14. Additionally, VA is scheduled to receive another allocation of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine this week. Fifteen VA facilities plan to start administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine after they receive their allocations. They are:

Palo Alto (Livermore) VA Medical Center

Palo Alto (Menlo Park) VA Medical Center

Bay Pines (FL) VA Health Care System

Miami (FL) VA Health Care System

West Palm Beach (FL) VA Health Care System

James A. Haley (Tampa, FL) Veterans Hospital

North Florida/South Georgia (Gainesville, FL) Health Care System

Lake Baldwin (Orlando, FL) VA Outpatient Clinic

Lake City (FL) VA Medical Center

Perry Point (MD) VA Medical Center

St. Louis (Jefferson Barracks, MO) VA Health Care System

New York Harbor (Brooklyn Campus) Health Care System

Salisbury (NC) VA Medical Center

Kerrville (TX) VA Hospital

American Lake (Tacoma, WA) VA Medical Center

As vaccines become available, VA care teams will reach out to eligible Veterans to schedule vaccinations. There is no need to preregister or come to a facility to sign up.

Veterans can get up-to-date information and sign up to receive regular updates on VA’s COVID-19 vaccine webpage.

Hello!! I am a 70 year old female Vietnam Era Veteran and live in Arlington, V.A. I would like to receive the double dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Is this being provided at the D.C. Veterans Hospital or nearby clinic? Maybe my question is answered in the above statements. Just in case it’s not, can you, please, advise as to the location of the nearest site? Thanks!!

  4. Dale Madrishin January 16, 2021 at 13:33

    • Richard Winstead January 15, 2021 at 18:03

I understand your thinking and do agree with what you are saying. However, if the VA has the vaccine it is only good for so long. So instead of letting that vaccine go to waste and delaying the shot even longer for you and others, go ahead and get it if they will see you.

  14. Richard Morrison December 24, 2020 at 17:50

I will be waiting. The most serious first, then the rest of us.

Why is New Mexico left out of the initial vaccinations? There are many veterans here and a major VA Hospital.

  40. Randy December 24, 2020 at 13:59

I’m interested in why Nebraska is left out also? The nearest place from the large population centers Omaha and Lincoln would be a six hour round trip to Des Moines.

  41. R. Terrin December 24, 2020 at 13:40

I am a 100% disabled vet. I would like to see the staff and healthcare workers at the VA receive the vaccine first. They are the ones that take care of all of us.

Why aren’t Connecticut, Maryland, Nebraska, and New Mexico Veterans going to get the vaccine?

New Mexico is the fifth largest state geographically. There are many minority (Native American and Hispanic) Veterans in New Mexico. There are 15 VA clinics throughout the state that serve Veterans, as well as the VA hospital in Albuquerque,.

I am writing to express deepest appreciation to the Providence VA Medical Center in Rhode Island for the care provided to me in November when I was stricken by the Covid pandemic. I entered early December, tested positive and was immediately assessed critically dehydrated, depleted of two critical enzymes, and admitted. The staff throughout, from the initial ‘bubble,’ ER and days in the Covid isolation ward was kind and caring. This Agent Orange exposed combat vet, not knowing he would see through his 71st year, was made safe and comforted. Knowing I had several pre-conditions, any of which would not provide hope for survival, I was blessed and with the care provided by the VA, I was saved.

All my thoughts and wishes are for the VA care providers whose attention was unwavering and undiminished by intense stress, physically and spiritually, that this pandemic has brought upon them in the execution of care they have endured for those overwhelmed before my arrival. I am so proud and thankful to all associated with the VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) and outpatient clinics. You are a blessing and in my eyes and heart will remain as loved as much as the band of brothers 50 years ago into which our lives where mutually entrusted. For it is in moments of eminent harm, no matter the time or place, we are physically distanced in combat or covid, you as my comrades, became and will remain family. Your strength and resolve is to be honored, love and embraced by the nation you are fighting to save. Keep the faith and stay in good care. As you have seen much and will continue to have to hang tough through the end of this historic battle, please know that you remain in thought and prayer. May any sacrifices of these times seek that path to spiritually strengthen and renew you we pass through these seasons of thanks and wonder.

So ….. “WHEN DOES WARP SPEED VACCINATION” HIT THE PORTLAND VAMC AND OPC’s?

  58. Russell Clark December 24, 2020 at 12:13

I am a veteran and am battling cancer, I am 80 years old. I also need my wife vaccinated because she
is my caretaker. I will get to temple texas if I can get vaccination

  59. Michael Henry December 24, 2020 at 12:09

So, no vaccinations near me, or more than two hours away, one way, for this this 67 year-old frontline healthcare worker with duties inside Covid quarantine areas working on patient equipment and inside of convalescent homes and California State facilities.

When my local VA healthcare Center is fifteen minutes away.

Kinda feel dropped through the cracks here.

By all means shoot up the docs and the window washers at the big facilities, but, “you old guys, we’ll get to ya when we get to ya.”

The VA has has MONTHS to prepare for this occasion, and after hospitals everywhere are on the news giving shots to people, the VA comes out with “news”.

  63. Christine Dickman December 22, 2020 at 17:55

Does that mean that Poplar Bluff VA is going to distribute to VA Outpatient Clinic in Cape Girardeau, MO? If not, it will be almost a two hour drive from Cape Girardeau to Poplar Bluff!

    • larry bell December 24, 2020 at 13:49

I called the main hospital in PA yesterday giving the vaccines and they said they knew nothing about the shots. After calling a dozen different numbers and half the people lying to me…. one said the shots are for people in the hospital and medical staff only. If you are one of those categories where you have failing organs or high risk; you are not included. Most likely will not be included either…. by the nature of how it’s set up. Your GP doctor would have to input you and many of the smaller clinics across america will not have that ability to add you to rosters. They will however vaccinate political types and senior members of the military like ex senior officers and minorities and drug addicts before they get to the people who are most deserving; because that is the nature of the beast. Just saying. The military and retiring from such was the worst decision in my life… I see that this country is basically evil; no matter how much the media and the govt will spin it otherwise. End of rant.

  64. Kathe Wecker December 22, 2020 at 15:05

Why is Nebraska being left out of vaccinations? We have a major VA hospital and Veterans Home here and several clinics throughout the state.
