In the Federal Government’s strategy to recruit and employ Veterans, the FedsHireVets.gov website was created to give resources and directions to Veterans seeking employment information. What is 5-point preference and who is eligible?
A 5-point preference eligible is a veteran whose discharge or release from active duty in the armed forces was under honorable conditions and service meets the following criteria:
- During a war; or
- During the period April 28, 1952 through July 1, 1955; or
- For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred after Jan. 31, 1955, and before Oct. 15, 1976; or
- During the Gulf War from Aug. 2, 1990, through Jan. 2, 1992; or
- For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred during the period beginning Sept. 11, 2001, and ending on Aug. 31, 2010, the last day of Operation Iraqi Freedom; or
- In a campaign or expedition for which a campaign medal has been authorized. Any Armed Forces Expeditionary medal or campaign badge, including Afghanistan (Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF), Iraqi Freedom (OIF)), Bosnia (Operations Joint Endeavor, Joint Guard, and Joint Forge), Global War on Terrorism, Persian Gulf, and others may qualify for preference.
The Veteran must have been discharged under an honorable or general discharge.

How do I determine if I am eligible for Veterans’ preference?In general, Veterans’ preference eligibility is based on dates of active duty service, receipt of a campaign badge, Purple Heart, or a service-connected disability. Only Veterans discharged or released from active duty in the armed forces under honorable conditions (honorable or general discharge) are eligible for Veterans’ preference.

But, everywhere I turn to for help including SAMS they want thousands of dollars just to be able to bid on a winning contract. Please advise us how we as Veterans can get help!!!
It sure would be nice if the VA did help finding jobs but they don’t. How about some training? Probably not. Just like all of these comments are for the most part UNREAD and more of some sort of VA Public Relations BS. “See we help Veterans. Did you see our last email we sent out?” I am really sick of hearing “We Appreciate Your Service” and want to actually see some appreciation. The VA is all show and NO GO. Just like their Medical you might get a check up now and then but when the rubber hits the road and your really need them they tend to duck out the back door and leave you with the Bill. (Hello Washington State Veterans Administration! Hello Walla Walla Wainwright!)

I agree the system is not working. Older Vietnam vets search and search for employment but get nothing. The system does not care about disability rating.
Let’s get some part time employment for Nam vets that are desperate to supplement income
DA rating are a small amount for living now a days. Jobs are the answer.
And since many of us are disabled enough that we cannot make it into a work place, but have plenty of skills that we could use to work remotely, how about developing some help with that?
I’m a 30% disabled vet, and the VA is my enemy. They won’t help me find employment, and have been ignoring legal documents supporting further disability for a decade and keep refusing any assistance in finding employment other than referring me to the Colorado Workforce Office, which has proven itself incompetent for 31 years. To top this off, the DVOP program is determined to do nothing to help veterans (maybe it’s just Officers).

Yes sir! They sh!t on officers like we don’t matter. I asked for VOCREHAB and they blew me off because I had a degree. Anyone saying they help vets are denacrooks and liars.
After reading these comments, it is obvious the VA is still broken. Contact your Reps and Senators and let them hear from you about your difficulties. We stand together and let our voices be heard.
In the last 4 years I have applied to maybe 8 positions. 2 of them within my field of work, the other 6, were something I didn’t have much experience for, but were things I thought I would enjoy. The 2 that WERE within my field both offered me jobs. 1 was a field electrician with the FAA (airport) 4 years ago, but I turned them down due to the pay. The 2nd is a HVAC (a/c and heating) which is my actual line of work as a civilian. I applied about a month ago, have gotten my offer letter, negotiated a little higher pay, and have now accepted the position. I will be moving multiple states away for this position and I am very excited to be working for this Agency. Keep applying guys, if you are not even getting interviews, I suggest re-writing your resume’. Read the FULL description and 99% of the time, the job posting tells you EXACTLY what your resume’ needs to say and what the requirements are.
Yep, I agree with most comments above. USA jobs is a freakin joke. I applied to over 14 different positions (which took a crap load of my time with those on line applications) and have never gotten one phone call back from anyone…EVER. I basically gave up. I remain unemployed to this day. Many thanks to the Federal Government!!
Your so right! USA JOBS process is rigged. I have 14 years of IT experience most of that Cybersecurity + a college degree + IT certifications and I never make the referrals for jobs I am qualified for! It’s so frustrating.
I am 24 year Navy vet. Lots of experience, good record and 60% disability. I applied for numerous positions. Had a few interviews but, every position I was interviewed for they would normally offer the lowest or lower than the advertised pay grade. Basically wanting to take me from E-8 pay down to E-4 pay. Was even told once that “well your already drawing retirement pay from the Navy so…”. I was told numerous times how my talents and experience would fit right into their team but, we can only pay you as a GS-4. I never applied for anything less than a GS-7 job. I gave up on working for the government. I would still like to. I would like to have a job where I can continue to serve. I just don’t think they truly want older veterans. At least that’s how I see it.
Not true. I have applied to VA last 7 years with no replies at ALL. I am disable with an MBA..it did not help probably my name is not a right fit..Anyway IT IS WHO YOU KNOW

Can I get a part-time job after trying from the military and a retirement from Federal service. I am 80% disability.
I worked for a DoD Agency for 13 years. I am a serviced connected disabled Veteran with 10 point Veteran Preference. I was never treated with respect. My coworkers were not Veterans or Disabled Veterans. They wanted their friend that was not a Veteran or Disabled Veteran to be hired instead of me and they literally told me so. They made my working life a living hell. Throughout the years I transferred within the Agency to a different location. I was treated the exact same way but we had a mixture of Veterans, Disabled Veterans and non veterans. Again the non Veterans wanted their non veteran to get hired. I had no support from any Veterans or disabled Veterans. My supervisor was a Non Disabled Veteran. He treated me like a POS. After he retired two of the employed non Veterans became my supervisor. It was then that I was forced to retire with 13 years with this agency because of my Service Connected Disability. I had no support of any kind when I was forced to retire. I wasn’t ready for retirement. I had a combined total of 25 years with the military and the DoD Agency I worked for. I was a 11B in the service. Recieved training and education as a Information Technology network engineer prior to being medically and honorable discharged from the military. I was a Certified for Novell Networks and a Certified System Engineer for Microsoft. There was also favoritism from other military branches. I witnessed a elegible veteran that was coached for a job by the Hiring Official. The Hiring Official even wrote the resume for veteran. Even provided the answers to the interview question of the interview panel. I just stayed in my lane. Just observed.

thank you The reason I did not or was not an American Citizen at the time ,I joined the the US Army in the United States of America 1962-1965 I served three years and did receive an Honorable Discharge and my citizenship, from The United States .I have never had any traffic violations ,citations or any issues with law enforcement in my life .
I do have a disability of percent of 10 Percent a bad windy day after a jump chute refilled with wind and dragged me a bit and have been receiving a 10 Percent Disability .
I continue to follow this up with the Hospital in Orlando VA along with Viera VA Hospital Clinic in Melbourne , Rockledge Florida it is a sattelite Unit for Orlando .with a 10 Percent Disability .
