Live in Fargo ND, drove to St. Paul MN for work yesterday. All three Subways in Fargo (North, South and West Fargo) happily honored the 6″ sub sandwich request! Fargo Rocks! Starting with Moorhead MN, and stopping in Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Sauk Center, St Cloud and St Paul NONE, I repeat NONE of the Subways honored the 6″ sandwich for Vets on Veterans Day!! The employees even laughed at me when I asked and a couple locations!

Was so disappointed with the Subway here in Fremont Ne. I thought they were doing free 6 inch subs for veterans, but not here they aren’t. So sad.

    • John Spearing November 11, 2019 at 18:38

That is, unfortunately, typical of franchise owners. The guy in Cartersville, GA, runs his business the same way. He doesn’t even accept Subway coupons! Some people’s kids, eh?

    • Harold A Brinley November 11, 2019 at 19:05

I called 4 Subways nearby and NONE were honoring veterans with even a $3 six inch sandwich.
If anyone knows of any Subway offering a Veteran’s Day deal please speak up. Otherwise they need to be removed from the list. It’s like getting credit for something they have no intention of doing.
No quite the same as ‘stolen valor’, but close.

Veterans day discounts (and everyday discounts) are wonderful but whoever wrote this list is a joke. No research at all and just posted random deals some from 10+ years ago or maybe local only.

  11. Kris Davis November 11, 2019 at 09:14

Went to 3 Subways. Was turned down at all 3. One owner was especially rude. Said corporate failed to inform the franchise owners.

  12. Steven Imlay November 11, 2019 at 02:23

To all who have served in War and peace. Some of you sacrificed 2, 3, 4, ,,,,,,20 years of your life to serve in the U.S. military and some sacrificed all. For your service know that you all deserve the thanks of the nation. Whether your nation sent you into combat to fight on foreign soil or you served in other capacities you served where others did not. You pledged your life to defend this country and its flag. You stood guard over the nation. You did not say not my circus, not my monkeys. You stepped up and answered the call to service or volunteered your service. Never disparage another members service because they didn’t have it as rough as you. Never disparage your own service to your country. There are too many who have not and would not serve who disrespect you behind your backs and to your face or offer false words of support. Stand tall for your service and the service of all your brothers and sisters in arms.

I am a disabled veteran of 30 years…(eyesight, nasal passages, lungs)…I wonder if it would be possible that the author or writer of this article, could cull all the business and other opportunities that were written by the good folks here, into one BIG alphabetical list (maybe by state, if not asking too much), please? and thanks

Saves my tiring eyesight from having to wade through every message, although most are welcome (I must have counted over 100 messages arguing about Home Depot vs. Lowes).

Thanks, and enjoy your Holidays and Holydays!!

Vets – Metzy’s Cantina in Newburyport, MA (www.metzys.com) is offering the following discount for Veteran’s Day:

15% off entire check for all Veterans (due to MA laws and regulations, alcoholic beverages must be excluded from this offer) on Veteran’s Day 2019. This includes everyone under one check that includes any member of the party positively identifying themselves as Active-duty, Reservists, and/or Veterans of our Unites States armed forces.

They are located at the train station in Newburyport, MA (5 Boston Way, NBPT). Excellent food, wonderful staff, great atmosphere. I highly recommend them!

Sunglass Hut and Oakley stores also offer military/Veterans discounts year around. It’s 15% off. Also, especially if you want Oakley’s specifically, active duty and retirees can get access to the Oakley Standard issue website where some models are more than half off what you would normally find them selling for in stores and other websites.

I was a brand-new instructor at Ft. Gordon’s Signal School when the 1968 Tet Offensive started 1/30/68. Several hundred of us were rushed through the vaccination/ inoculation {with shots for such lovely items as bubonic plague, dengue fever, etc] checkout procedures in early February and we were on our way from Augusta GA to Travis AFB, where we ‘bumped’ everyone ahead of us. We stopped in Hawaii and I ran into a butter-bar Lt. who I had gone to college with. We ignored the no-fraternization rule and got tanked in an airport bar. Next thing I know, we are being diverted to Clark AFB in the Philippines, where *we* got ‘bumped to let Marines on board who were heading to Khe Sanh, still muddy from jungle training, carrying their M14s. I always hoped that those guys survived.
    .
After landing at Bien Hoa and processing at Long Binh, several of us wound up at Soc Trang Army Airfield in the Mekong Delta. Nobody knew that we were coming, nobody knew what to do with us. Most the guys went back to ‘Fart Garbage’ within a few weeks, but I volunteered for a full year’s duty. One of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. I had the privilege and honor to work as an Avionics tech for 2 Assault Helicopter Companies, a BirdDog platoon, and any visiting aircraft (LOHs, Cobras, Mohawks, C-123s and C-130s) that had comm- or nav-equipment problems. What a great group of people to work for and to work with. 50+ years later, I am still in touch with some, although many have died along the way since then. And I would do it again.
    .
I was drafted, as were 25% of those who served in Vietnam. My father was a Marine officer wounded on Guadalcanal, my brother had just returned from 16 months near Danang: there was no way that I was NOT gonna serve.; My brother died in ’85 from Agent Orange. I was diagnosed in 2010 and have been a VA patient ever since, in the NorCal/Bay Area region. The VA system here is First Class, “Numbah F—y One.” Absolutely phenomenal people, great service, top-notch medical care. I hope that my fellow Veteran brothers and sisters are receiving the same high level of care that we are enjoying in this region.
    .
TIPPING after a free/discounted meal: wait-staff work for trips, hence often are paid only $2.xx as a ‘salary.’ Here in the Bay Area and in other for3eward-thinking locales, there are higher-than-average wages paid, but the cost of housing/rent is way-high. Please, ‘over-tip’ your “waitron.” Don’t leave them resenting having to serve a cheapskate Veteran in the future. Frankly, I do not seek out Veteran discounts for myself, but I applaud those companies that do offer them. And please: ALWAYS say “Thank You.”
    .

  27. HMFIC November 9, 2019 at 20:14

I’ve heard of family members of veterans expecting the discounts. The discounts are only for the veteran, not their family members.

Survivor’s guilt of a not in-theater Vietnam Veteran but… who served during every declared and undeclared war since 1964 to present in either active, reserve or IRR, I am. The likelihood is we, all veterans, and those who did not serve, suffer survivor’s guilt. My own solution to not take the final solution path, but instead, declared… F*** It… For 55 years, I volunteered to serve in theater during each conflict. We should not be ashamed that we were not chosen to go. We should not be ashamed to take the benefits afforded to us, I will eat at the soup kitchen without shame.
    Welcome home!
I will not flaunt my service to country with patches or hats! I will keep my head down and divert my eyes.
I will fly our Stars and Stripes High 24/7, I will proudly stand tall and salute at every parade and ceremony, while tears flow. And I damn well will get a free hot dog at ABC Diner one day a year.
p.s. The disrespect of our political leaders and most of the 99%ers are not worth anyone’s time nor oxygen. The “thank you for your service” phase is… patronizing. WT****?

Whatever the circumstances of your service, e.g. wartime/peacetime, combat/non-combat, injured/uninjured, or drafted/volunteered, you were subject to be in harm’s way at any time. You served while others stayed in school, got well paid jobs, and slept comfortably. You paid for your “freebees” with your limbs, physical and mental health, separation, strain on relationships, and many other things others did not have to endure. Granted some businesses get advertising benefits from their offerings, but they don’t have to do what they’re doing. There are probably other, less costly, ways to advertise. If you served, accept their offers graciously and don’t gripe. In restaurants, remember to tip on the value of the meal, not what it actually cost you. And if you’re there with someone (non-military) who supported you during your service, let the cost of their meal be a “Thank You” to them, too!

There are several others that provide every day Veteran n discounts; Supercuts, Lowes, AT&T, Verizon, Amerigas, Bass Pro/Cabelas, Dunkin Donuts told me to just use the Senior Discount rate, and I’m sure there are many more. Comcast makes you jump through hoops and have declined me multiple times even with copies of my 214 and VA letters. As you shop remember that typically Walmart and Target do not provide any Vet discounts.

it’s nice to see the list grow. It’s a great deal for people who live near these locations. Unfortunately for people such as myself it is something I can’t really take advantage of. With the exception of Lowe’s who gives a 10% Active Duty/Veterans discount year round and the nearest Home Depot to me is 25 miles away so I am in the middle of nowhere. I have 4 cities where a good deal of these places are.at least 1.5-2 hours away. I also get to spend another Veterans Day without my “Bloomin Onion” from Outback.
Enjoy the day my fellow vets.

  50. Brent November 8, 2019 at 20:31

It’s nice to receive the accolades for serving in the military by “Joe and Jane Public”, but I challenge our military personnel to return the thanks to those taxpayers by simply saying, “THANK YOU FOR FLIPPING THE BILL”. Without taxpayers, there would be no VA, no military pay and retirement, no free housing, uniforms, meals, healthcare, R&R resorts and military pride that most of us exemplify. Return the thanks to those TAXPAYERS who constantly provide and take care of us through their Federal and State taxes each paycheck.

  56. PAT MARTIN November 8, 2019 at 10:15

It’s so gratifying to hear from Vets of all Services, and combat/non-combat service. I met and married my husband while at Fort Ord as the first female mechanic for the 54th MP Company. No combat, it was peace time in the 70’s, but I did go to Germany. I had always felt that I couldn’t claim that honor of being a veteran UNTIL my husband of 40 years was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The VA, DAV and ALS Assn were so supportive and made the process of filing claims, receiving medical care and equipment and even a grant for a special van.
When both he and I lost our jobs, he immediately filed for VA Healthcare. Since I wasn’t “disabled” in any way, I was not approved, but the people at Hines VA Hospital in Illinois helped me fill out a hardship waiver and now I am receiving free healthcare. Hubby passed away 2 years ago, but the VA is still there for me, and I thank them. I have even started asking about discounts for ME This list is awesome, thank you for it. And to all the other veterans who didn’t see combat or get deployed to areas of unrest, thank you for your service.
FYI: TWO out of every THREE people who get diagnosed with ALS are VETERANS!! Whether you deployed or not, it is immediately identified as 100% disability. If you are or know a veteran who has been diagnosed, make sure they talk to their local VA OR an ALS Assn rep for help. It made a huge difference in hubby’s care. We could have been bankrupt and homeless if not for the VA.

    • Fran November 9, 2019 at 07:16

Thank you for your note about your care. I served as an MP in the 4 th Battalion in Germany in 1977-1980. I applied for VA health benefits and have been getting care. I pay a co-pay. Hoping that the VA health care continues to keep moving forward adding more facilities and upgrading care.

    • Enid Nalley November 9, 2019 at 15:32

      Hello Mrs. Martin,

I am not sure if you have been told that the beneficiaries of 100% P&T Veterans are entitled to healthcare from CHAMPVA . I saw your article and I am a Veteran (disabled also), who works for the VA. In case you hadn’t been made aware of this information, I wanted to let you know, so that you can apply if this is your situation.

      God bless

    • Pam lov November 9, 2019 at 20:22

My father wasn’t a “war” vet, but a lifer. He too died of ALS, my mom is getting DIC, and is applying for aid and attendance. She has good health care, from Tricare. The VA has helped her alot.

Thank you for sharing your story of the lost of your husband, he will never be forgotten, because Veterans like my self stick together in our hearts. We do not have to know one another to understand how hard it is to be a spouse of a Veteran. I served in the US Army; my last duty station was Mannheim Germany. I’m 57yr old female who have never been married, but I’ve experienced what military spouse; whether it be male, or female deal with on a daily basis. I will always keep out military spouse, as well as our all military soldiers in my prayers. May God bless America and all military soldiers and civilians.

      Sincerely,

      SPC Rasberry

  58. Andrew F. Kouchoukos November 8, 2019 at 04:15

Let’s hear it from those who were conscripted (drafted) during the the Vietnam war. Being drafted is not the same as volunteering. I was subsequently drafted. If I had to serve involuntarily, I thought that I may get something out of this war which I knew very little about. Sooo, I volunteered to serve 3 years as opposed to the 2 year conscription where most draftees wound up being ground pounders. This decision more than likely saved my life. Even though I did not qualify to get what I wanted, Helicopter school, I was now committed to serve my 3 year voluntary enlistment. Although it was not the most ideal way of spending the next 3 years of my life, I learned more in those 3 years and that kinda set the tone for the next 50. Yeah, I am kinda proud of those 3 years including the 1 year service in Vietnam. Yeah, give me those discount and thank you America..

    • SSgt. C. Sapp November 8, 2019 at 08:24

A big THANK YOU!!!! To all who were drafted. The sacrifices you made were great and you deserve every reward of your involuntary involvement. Thank you for paving the way of future veterans now ☺️

      • David Alan November 10, 2019 at 21:16

Thank you . I remember the day my mail man was walking up to my mail box with the draft notice in his hand. He said I’m sorry to be the one to deliver this envelope; as he handed me my Draft notice . I immediately thought about going to Nam for no good reason at all. I was thinking of finishing College, getting married to my then girlfriend, riding in the wind on my motorcycle and just being a middle class, white teenage kid, full of dreams for a more peaceful world. I went back inside my apartment and put on a rolling stones album and cranked up the speakers until my neighbor lady came to my open front door yelling that her baby was trying to take a nap. The truth was her General Hospital Soap Opera was on and i was disturbing her hearing about Luke and Laura or whoever was on then. I went to work and showed my boss the notice and then on to the girlfriend .I was drafted and went on to basic at Fort Ord Ca., then to Ft Bliss Texas for more advanced training. After my getting used to the day to day military operations I stayed in a few more years to the rank of E-6 SSG. I was needed at home for my mother who was alone and needed help and left the service with a couple years left to retirement. Every time i see a rifle i think about some poor kid sent to get killed in a war somewhere on this planet. Today i’m retired in North Little Rock, Arkansas just trying to be a good person just because. Thanks again for the post. I was looking for free meals for 11 Nov 19 veteran’s day and somehow got on the page with your post. I’m glad so many companies are helping us vets out on this day…that social security check does not pay for restaurant meals. To my fellow Veterans Via Con Dios mi amigos ! Muddivers still rule!

    • Steven Sparenborg November 8, 2019 at 13:36

Almost drafted, ditto. Volunteered, ditto. Wanted helicopter training, ditto. Not qualified for helicopter, ditto (too tall). Vietnam, ditto. Feel like it saved my life, ditto. Enjoy your day this Monday !!!

  59. Sunny Samways November 7, 2019 at 23:01

Out of all these comments the complainers need an attitude adjustment. NOT ONE of these companies needs to give any of us a darn thing, and you have the nerve to post your negative cheap shot comments. Thank them back for recognizing and giving us a gift for our service. Happy up folks, and while you’re at it give the servers the 20% tip of what the bill would’ve been, that’s the customary amount. Drives me nuts when I see folks leave their insulting $2.00 tip when the wait staff just busted their butts toting and fetching for you. You bitch cause things cost so much then leave $2.00, can you live on a tip like that? Turn the tables, look in the mirror, treat others how you’d like to be treated. Thank you to all the businesses offering us discounts and free meals. A lot of us do appreciate it.

    • Rob November 8, 2019 at 10:29

you know that its not a law to tip anyone right? They tote and fetch stuff because its THEIR JOB. Do you see dishwashers being tipped for doing their job? How about lawyers? Doctors? Didnt think so.

      • Bill November 8, 2019 at 16:04

That’s the stupidest comment I have ever seen. Do you know that servers make way below minimum wage because their income is supposed to rely on tips? If you don’t leave tips, then you should just go to McDonalds or some other fast food joint and don’t stink up these fine establishments that are doing you a great service on this day. Nothing worse than a person that doesn’t tip a hard working member of a wait staff.

      • Joshua November 8, 2019 at 17:20

Dishwashers, lawyers, and Doctors are paid a fair wage. Servers, and Bartenders usually make minimum wage or way less. (East coast I was making 2.13 an hour.)

No one said you had to tip. Just said you are a giant d-bag for not tipping.

        Cheers.

      • Colton November 8, 2019 at 21:14

You’re right, it is their job. However companies also only pay them next to nothing, and the vast majority of their income comes off of tips. Dishwashers have a higher base pay rate than waiters.

      • Adrienne Davison November 8, 2019 at 22:47

Servers also don’t get paid minimum wage per the government. Thank God there are still good people out there because jackasses like you keep relaying misleading/false information.

      • Leonard OConnor November 8, 2019 at 23:24

Rob… You are totally clueless. A lot of restaurants pay much LESS than minimum wage to their waitresses because they are allowed to factor in estimated tips. IE. Denny’s in our area starts waitresses out at approx $2.40+ an hour. Their cooks, dishwashers and busboys make more and the waitresses are required to split their tips with the chef and busboy.
Under federal law, employers can take a tip credit by paying tipped workers, such as servers and bartenders, as low as $2.13 an hour if those workers earn at least the standard minimum wage of $7.25 an hour once their tips are added in but there is no accurate way to account for tips.
Average Denny’s hourly pay ranges from approximately $8.33 per hour for Customer Service Representative to $16.01 per hour for Shift Manager. The average Denny’s salary ranges from approximately $17,000 per year for Chef to $65,533 per year for Area Manager.
In big cities wait staff might make more BUT in rural communities they can barely survive and many have 2 or 3 jobs. Also… a lot of restaurants keep waitstaff under 30 hrs a week so they don’t have to pay benefits. This is illegal in some states but it is still rampant in this industry.
Rob it is absolutely ludicrous that you assume that they are just doing their job…. you again have no clue whatsoever. Even many of our military personnel are underpaid but we have medical, housing, and retirement as a benefit. You should be ashamed of your judgement of the people who have to survive on tips! Don’t blame them… the system needs to be fixed so a person can make a sustainable living wage. Some other countries have a better system … IE Tipping is not expected or required in Australia and is illegal in some areas, the average starting wage for wait staff is $17.10 starting and $22 for part time. So rethink your evaluation.
My family and I are extremely grateful for every business that supports us as veterans and are fully aware that they do not need to do so and we reciprocate by using these establishments and making sure that we leave proper tips.

      • Nolan Lee November 9, 2019 at 01:43

Rob your wrong. Some states pay waiters and waitresses a lower wage because of tips. Without tips they can’t pay rent or feed their kids.

      • Jennifer Keelty November 9, 2019 at 03:22

Waitstaff are only paid a little over two dollars an hour because the rest comes from Tips. The dishwashing stuff get paid at least minimum wage. Think about that…

      • Jennilyn November 9, 2019 at 03:47

The dishwasher gets paid full wages (redacted)hole!!! The waitress that is busting the hump and fetching all you requests is only paid $2.43 per hour the rest comes from the tips!!!

      • Jennilyn bruce November 9, 2019 at 03:48

The dishwasher gets paid full wages (redacted)hole!!! The waitress that is busting the hump and fetching all you requests is only paid $2.43 per hour the rest comes from the tips!!!

      • Megan McFadden November 9, 2019 at 08:38

Yes, they get paid to “Tote and fetch” but they get paid less than minimum wage because tips are considered part of their pay. They get taxed on their tips, it’s not free money. Dishwashers and bussers get paid regular wages because they are not servers, though some servers share their tips with the bussers because they help out. Tipping is not the law, but when you go to a restaurant you understand going in that the servers work for tips. Lawyers and Dr.s do not.

      • Jennifer Heninger November 9, 2019 at 09:16

My daughter is a server. She makes $2.10 an hour plus tips. Can you live on that? No, it’s not sustainable. Be considerate of others. 20% is barely enough to make ends meet.

      • Scott Miller November 9, 2019 at 10:48

The tipping system sucks. But until the U.S. changes to a better system, don’t stiff the restaurant staff.

      • O.K. November 9, 2019 at 12:12

Dishwashers make minimum wage at least. Servers and tipped employees in most states who are expected to “fetch” your stuff make $2.13 an hour, and after taxes often don’t get a paycheck and depend on tips for a living. Thank you all veterans for your service but please also tip your servers who are working hard to make sure you and your families have a nice meal on Veteran’s Day

      • CJ November 9, 2019 at 13:47

Rob, I guess you don’t understand that the servers take lower pay with the expectation gracious people will pay more than the printed bill. Most restaurants require any gratuity be split between waitress, busboy, dishwasher and cook. It is the restaurant that is giving you the gift, the least you can do is show a little courtesy and tip the same as if you paid for the meal. Lawyers and doctors aren’t tipped because they are specifically chosen by you to serve them. Restaurant servers do not have that luxury.

      • RW comeaux November 9, 2019 at 14:22

Their JOB probably pays them about$2.35 an hour. The tips are their real income. Most waiters give a portion of their Tips to the non-wait staff. Comparing them to a Doctor or Lawyer??? You need to wake up.

      • Bob Slavin November 9, 2019 at 17:33

Hey Rob, wake up. Servers are not paid like doctors or lawyers. They often have to share tips with others working at the restaurant and for the most part, they work pretty hard. I don’t know what you do for a living but it’s pretty obvious that you are trying out for the role of the grinch.

      • Jennifer Smith November 9, 2019 at 23:22

The difference is dishwashers, lawyers and doctors make at least minimum wage. Waitresses and waiters do NOT even make minimum wage. Their hourly pay is much less. So please tip
        them.

      • Kayla Conner November 10, 2019 at 02:05

You can’t be serious?! They don’t even get paid minimum wage. Their average pay is 2 to $3 an hour. They depend on tips to make a living wage. How dare you compare that with doctors and lawyers wages

      • cpt mark scheidecker November 10, 2019 at 07:14

I hope some day you will learn the difference between a free lunch and a freeloader….
When employees loose 60% of their income because a veteran who was given a Free meal left a -0%- tip,
They will Not want to work on Vets Days. Not to mention what they may think of All Vets..
I always leave at least a $5 tip and if I see another Vet who may not be able to leave a nice tip I will offer to pay the tip for them. The least I can do….

      • charlie Schulz November 10, 2019 at 08:16

Wait staff pay is reduced because it is expected that wait staff will get tips to make up for their lower hourly rate. When you don’t tip you are just showing that you are cheap and like to ride on the back of people who work to serve you. Many of the folks you are stiffing have families that depend on this income.

      • Morris Friedman November 10, 2019 at 09:29

You are ignorant, please don’t go get a freebie and embarrass us and yourself

      • clifford mckrell November 10, 2019 at 09:51

work as a waiter for a while…might change your s****y attitude. when I worked my way thru college as a waiter, I shared tips with kitchen staff and bus people. learned a lot of lessons about teamwork and getting ahead.. go to the UK or Australia and try to get some service. place your food order at the front door and pick up your table ware, water, etc. and the one server (who works for minimum wage) will bring you your food. if you want another napkin or drink you gotta go get it. share a little of your fortune and be nice…not a jerk

      • Brit November 10, 2019 at 10:08

It may not be the law to tip, however in most states servers are paid a whopping $2 and change PER HOUR and are expected to make their money from tips. The kitchen staff, including the dishwashers, do get at least minimum wage, yet at many restaurants the servers still need to SHARE their tips with the kitchen staff. So when you pay the bill, you pay for the food, when you tip, you pay for the service.

      • Theodore Agresta November 10, 2019 at 11:31

Mnimum wage for wait staff is usually 2.15/hr but varies by state.

        https://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

        • Peter Joseph November 10, 2019 at 21:04

You are a very rude person. I hope you don’t eat out EVER. I hope the servers know you feel that you don’t have to tip them so they can spit in your food. And yes, the dishwashers, cooks and bus boys all get a share of the tips that you leave your server so you are tipping everyone. Doctors and lawyers don’t get tips because they make six figure incomes and don’t need tips to survive. In a lot of states, thankfully not California, restaurants are allowed to pay their servers BELOW minimum wage because they hope the servers will get enough tips to make a living. So when rude selfish people like you refuse to leave a tip you are actually making a hard working American work for less than minimum wage. Please do everyone a favor and eat all of your meals at home. It’s not worth waiting 30 minutes for a table at a nice restaurant because idiots like you are taking up all the good seats. Also you can always move your non-Patriotic ass to Europe where nobody tips because the restaurants add 20% to all of the food costs and pay their servers a living wage.

        • Nick S November 11, 2019 at 10:43

Read the full article. Minimum wage is $2.15/hour IF they make enough in tips. If they don’t make any tips then they make the standard minimum wage for the state.

      • Dennis stewart November 10, 2019 at 22:09

I am so sorry you’re such a bitter person. Please seek help!

      • Joseph November 11, 2019 at 05:55

        Rob…just stay home, please.

      • J Adkins November 11, 2019 at 08:06

I always add the discount (if any) to the tip!!

      • NANETTE PORTER November 11, 2019 at 12:41

A dishwasher gets paid the state minimum wage for doing those dishes. A doctor and what not all get paid for there jobs as well. A waiter gets paid around $2.00 and some change an hour they make there money off of tips. And no there is no law that seys you have tip but do we need laws to tell us to be decent people.

    • Justin Nichols November 8, 2019 at 11:10

      This. All of this!

      • Taylor Schmitz November 8, 2019 at 22:51

They get paid less than HALF minimum wage because they work for their tips. They also have to PAY the dishwashers, bus boys, and bartenders half of their tips. Just fyi.

    • B. Seay November 10, 2019 at 20:11

Sunny, I really appreciate you telling it like it should be told!

    • Anastasia McKoy November 11, 2019 at 09:15

  60. Robert Lamaster November 7, 2019 at 18:11

I want to the kitchen store, Sur La Table, since my wife wanted a new cutting board. I figured, what the heck… it’s worth a shot. Discovered that they give a 10% discount to veterans every day.

I just wish that Veterans Day didn’t fall on a weekday this year. I appreciate the discounts, but I’ll be at work for most of the day.

    • Jennifer Ross November 8, 2019 at 14:07

Williams-Sonoma gives at 15% off everything, but electrics. On electrics they do 10%. They do this year round.

  61. Ben Wjotaler November 7, 2019 at 17:58

Spirit Mountain Casio is offering a free meal at any of its’ restaurants on Veterans day.

  62. Kenneth Robert Lockridge November 7, 2019 at 17:01

Wow, there are a lot of us, huh? Best kept secret Veterans’ day treat: Stratford Hall, the Lee mansion, which looks like a Victorian English mansion, gives free admission to you and your entire family on Veterans’ and Memorial Days, and that includes access to their Westmoreland-area Potomac tidal beach, where you can find fossil sharks’ teeth! There are picnic facilities, a nice gift shop, and great overlooks of the Potomac. Don’t miss this fine museum and parklike atmosphere!

  63. Eric Norman November 7, 2019 at 16:56

On Veterans Day Denny’s offers free build your own grand slam breakfast

  64. Dayn Meisner November 7, 2019 at 15:48

I was in the Air Force from 1978-87. I understand how a lot of Vets may feel that they shouldn’t be recognized because they were never in combat or stationed in unfriendly areas of the world. I was one of those who spent 9 years in California and the Outback of Australia. No where near danger. I always questioned the recognition I recieved. But as one of my older veteran friends said during one of his stories about Vietnam several years back, “It takes EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE that enters the military to make things work in the military, and to keep our country and world safe”.
So I say “Thank You!!!” to each and every one of you that served!!

    • Brittany Demro November 9, 2019 at 01:04

You made a sacrifice to give up your family and the conveniences of ordinary American life. Things many people take for granted are sacrificed by those of us who serve, no matter the location or circumstances. Remember that ;)

    • Scott Miller November 9, 2019 at 10:57

You were trained, available, and ready to fight anywhere at a moments notice. Yes, that does count for something.

    • Carrie M Christman November 9, 2019 at 16:28

I too was in during a “peace time” or so we all thought. I assure you, from 1978 to 1985, plenty was going on. Any of us in any branch was able to be called to any location. I was Air Force, and still was “indirectly” involved with the Iranian Rescue. Bases in England also may have supported the Lebanon conflict. My step brother was a Marine, on a boat off shore when the barracks were bombed. It was Army and Air Force who helped put the people together so they could be returned to their families. No matter where we were, we were in support of a global mission. Whether it be at Tyndall AFB, RAF Alconbury, Sardinia, Saudi Arabia, Cannon AFB where the F111’s also lived and went to hot spots, we all served. The “Star Wars” program involved many of us. I was just mentioning Australia as an F111 location. Peace time, it is never peaceful.

As a woman it was what it was.

      • Carrie M Christman November 9, 2019 at 16:37

Thank you to all who served.
As a Marine taught me to say in return to folks who thank us…
        “You were worth it”

        And so is America.

The meals and services given on Veterans Day, I hope you all can patronize the place.
        I know I do.
Wegmans is offering something – Bob Wegman was a Marine! Thank you.
8-10 hot breakfast on Veteran’s Day.

Wegman’s are a Veteran owned business.

    • george November 9, 2019 at 17:06

Thanks Dayn, I was in the Army from 1975-1978 and was stationed in Germany during my service years, and have often wonder or felt the same guilt. It’s nice to know others feel the same as well as hear the encouragement too! Thanks George

    • Shelly November 10, 2019 at 10:02

Thank you for that comment. I was in the Army in the 90s in Korea and in the states and I always feel dumb because I didn’t serve in any battles. I feel like so many sacrificed so much more than I did.

    • Lynette M. Curry November 10, 2019 at 19:29

Appreciating the Vietnam Era Vet’s compliment to all service members and to him I say: “Thank You and Welcome Home”!

I am the proud daughter of a decorated Vietnam Era & Korean War retired Airborne Army Vet and granddaughter of a decorated Korean War Navy Vet and related to many serving then & now.

In addition, I also served in the USAF (’76-’82) during the cold war Era.

To all my fellow Vets, Thank You for Your Services and Sacrifices. I AM A WATCHDAWG for the ELDERS, who paved the way for me. Salute!

    • Robert Carroll November 11, 2019 at 09:39

Dan, I enlisted in the AF in 78 as well and did 6 years. While you and I are not combat veterans, we should be proud that we stood up as Cold War warriors. I have no doubt that you trained every day as if going to war was imminent. Be proud sir.

    1. ALWAYS put the link ”…for more details…” such as done for ”Golden Corral – November 11, 2019 Military Veterans, retirees, and active duty members are being offered a free sit-in “thank you” dinner on Monday, November 11, 2019, from 5pm -9pm. For more details visit the Golden Corral website. https://www.goldencorral.com/military-appreciation/).”

    2. Also, is there a way to develop placing one’s zip code in a field to ‘localize’ the place(s) where the Veteran can obtain ”Free Meals, Exclusive Resources??” E.g., 54th Street Grill and Bar is not in Austin, TX.

    • Tashara H. November 7, 2019 at 15:36

IPIC Theaters is giving vets a free movie pass on Veterans’ Day. If you have one in your area and have never been, I suggest you take advantage of this opportunity. Their seats are soooo comfortable. I put their website below.

      https://www.ipic.com/

    • Renee G. November 10, 2019 at 00:28

That’s REALLY nice… something we all can pass on to our fellow buddies who are holding onto that guilt. I tell mine ALL the time, ” You signed the same line, you wore the same uniform as I did, you were just NEEDED somewhere else, for some other duty… that doesn’t make you any less of a soldier!” Thanks for your words, they will be used (if that is okay, of course)…. and I wish you the very best Veterans Day possible! # NEVERFORGET

  66. W A G November 7, 2019 at 13:50

Black Bear Diner offers a free meal to Veterans on Veteran’s day. You should always ask about a discount as most places do have them all year long.

  67. william Goodson November 7, 2019 at 13:25

I appreciate all the discounts given to Veterans combat or not. Our biggest and most important thing as veterans we can do is get the VA fixed.

    • M November 11, 2019 at 14:46

I agree! Get the VA fixed is the most important.

I served as a Navy Dental Tech / Corpsman in Viet Nam 66-67 on the Hospital ship U.S.S. REPOSE, and came home with my PTSD Express card ( “don’t leave nam without it” ). I have always had fine treatment from the VA as well as all Vets., who are my Band of Brothers Family. I have for years relaized that there are lots of “Era” Vets. who need to hold their heads up high for the following reason:

At least some amusement parks offer a discount to vets on certain holidays or holiday weekends. Cedar Point and Kings Island in Ohio do on Memorial Day weekend and July 4th weekend at least.

  74. Jim Fogle November 7, 2019 at 11:03

I believe there is a clear division between draft era veterans and all volunteer veterans. Draft era veterans may have volunteered or compelled but either way there was an clear expectation they would serve. The volunteer veterans served without the draft cloud hanging over their head. I am constantly amazed the services have been able to attract so many volunteers to serve so well. Peace or war time, the possibility is always there that something bad can happen. Even in times of war most military personnel support the warriors’ effort but do not themselves engage the enemy.

I salute ALL veterans and am grateful for their service.

    • Johnny November 11, 2019 at 06:38

I agree places like American Legion and even the VA to some point . dis veterans that served in peace time as Cold war veterans and less of a Veteran. I served when it was age appropriate for me to serve my country not to grab glory. To me all vets are hero’s and courageous no matter when they served .

Ford Motor Company is also a PROUD employer of many Veterans. Don’t forget to ask your dealer about all discounts and rebates that are offered and available for you!

    • Deborah Jordan November 7, 2019 at 19:34

Hey John, I was a Seabee too stationed in NCBM 1 in Gulfport. I didn’t go to war but did go Korea and parts of the middle east that was unsafe. I was spit, shot, and assaulted by the locals a few times for being a solider. I was away from my family for many years. It’s a sacrifice I’m proud to have made plus I appreciate the support I have from my country. All veterans should be honored because we all could have found ourselves on the front lines. I do think we owe extra care to those that was injured so their sacrifice is somewhat paid back.

Really? My dad had his full military uniform on and didn’t get a discount. They didn’t mention anything about it.

  82. Kenneth Deemer November 7, 2019 at 09:34

Lowe’s offers a VA discount on everything all the time. They also have special parking for Vets and for Wounded Warriors.

    • FC November 9, 2019 at 14:12

No Lowe’s doesn’t offer Veterans a discount all the time. Vets have to go on line first, fill out forms, give proof of being a vet online, then get a membership account. After all that, then they can use their membership account for the discount. It’s hogwash. Home Depot lets a vet just show proof they are a Vet right there at the register.

    • Ron kumpus November 10, 2019 at 21:36

Lowes does not do this as of a month ago but Home Depot just started it.l do not make a day of it. I appreciate all that show how they really feel about us.( not the ones who pelt you with rocks bricks etc when you return home and get off the plane ) Many gave, Many gave it all

    • Temina November 11, 2019 at 10:18

Lowe’s let us know that Veterans Day only, you can receive the normal 10% off, but also you can stack any coupons with that for up to 20% off! This is awesome.

I have mixed emotions on Veterans Day. I served for 5 years as a Seabee during peacetime. I go hurt, but not in a combat role. I wish that this could be designated for combat veterans as I do not ever equate my service to theirs. Not trying to stir up controversy. I have started seeing combat veteran tags on cars, by all means they should get those spaces designated for them.

I understand where you are you coming from. I was in 6 1/2 years but never saw the sandbox and certainly cant compare to those in combat. However, you still gave 5 years of your life to serve in some role, support or otherwise, ensuring many others come home safe. While you’re not a combat veteran, you’re still a veteran. Don’t sell yourself short but if you don’t feel comfortable using things designated for vets then don’t you’re not required to disclose that to others :)

      • Mitch Braswell November 7, 2019 at 08:53

Well the day I received orders to go to Vietnam I crashed in a Marine Corps helicopter. It killed two Marines sitting next to me. Three minutes earlier I was sitting where they were. I’m now a disabled veteran . I greatly appreciate these companies doing this. I’ve never taken advantage of It though till now. I excepted the $40 discount off of Amazon prime. I may take the great clips haircut for free but I also tip well. I do understand your point though.

      • Gary Mcadams November 7, 2019 at 10:35

Totally understand. I am a Vietnam ERA vet. I make sure folks I talk to know the difference. However, just because it wasn’t cashed, don’t mean ya didn’t write the check.

      • Randy Lund November 8, 2019 at 14:01

Don’t ever feel bad about your service or where you served. I’m a Beirut Vet but went in when I was 17 because of the Iran hostage situation. I always tell vets, no matter what you did or where you were, you’re part of a brotherhood that will never be dissolved by anyone. Don’t let your duty station pull you down from not being in combat. You were where you were supposed to be.

I feel the same way. I served and have a service connected disability, but I was never in combat. I feel guilty getting any recognition for being a veteran. But people are always telling me that I deserve it because I was willing to serve and sacrifice. I could never compare my injury to what combat veterans have been through. But my family and I did sacrifice a lot for me to serve. Anyway, glad I’m not the only one who feels that way. Thank you for your service and sacrifices to help protect my freedom!!!

      • Steve McCloskey November 7, 2019 at 10:18

Why would you feel guilty about not being a combat veteran. Combat or non combat YOU ARE A Veteran!!! Be proud of it and take advantage of any and all benefits and discounts available. I am a Viet Nam Veteran and have a brother who served but not during any conflict/war. I make no distinction between his service and mine,

      • N. Genes November 7, 2019 at 10:53

I was in combat. 2.5 times. Your role is just as important during peace time. No Veteran goes in because they think they aren’t going to fight a war. If you went in to serve your country you are just as eligible as me. Pick your head up and be proud.

    • Manny c November 7, 2019 at 08:05

Thank you for your service. Every member of the military gave up their freedoms for a short period of time to provide a service to this country. Combat or not we all deserve free food once a year. -Combat medic, OIF, 09-10

      • Army Vet November 7, 2019 at 10:36

I feel the same guilt but after talking to some combat veterans I don’t feel so bad about it. One Marine that I was talking to actually called me crazy. He said the same thing: You were available, that is all that counts.

    • Richard MacDonald November 7, 2019 at 08:29

John, thank you for your service. I to am a peace time vet and agree that combat veterans had a totally different experience than Vets like us. I really believe thought that what really counts is the fact that we did serve and would have gone into harms way if called on. My nephew has 3 Purple Hearts and we have had this conversation. He has assured me that he feels the same way. I also think that combat wounded vets deserve a special level of respect and whatever the US and its citizens can give to show that respect. Please don’t minimalise your service as I’m sure you would have done whatever necessary to defend our country and your brothers. Thanks again. Richard

    • Frank Woechan November 7, 2019 at 08:30

John, In some ways I agree with you about not equating your service with “in combat” service. For many years I have felt the same way. HOWEVER, you did volunteer to provide your life, if necessary, in defence of our country and it’s citizens. Had the needs of the Navy been different during your enlistment, you might have been put into harms way and I feel confident you would have stepped up to the challenge. For me, I spent 7 years in the Navy with 5 of those years as a Nuclear Machinist Mate on a Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine. I wasn’t getting shot at, so why should I get the same benefits as a combat veteran ? It only took me 40 years to come to grip with the fact that I stepped up and volunteered to give my life, if necessary. Thankfully all I had to put up with was a cold ocean that constantly looked for ways to occupy the same space in the Submarine with me. But I wasn’t getting shot at. Like you, I too have special reverence for those that faced enemy gun fire. We all are brothers and sisters in arms. Welcome home brother.

    • Freeman Slavens November 7, 2019 at 08:53

I served 13 years and was medically retired I did two tours as an Engineer & one as a Mortuary Affairs Specialist. I’ve experienced driving down the highway at 60 mph in the back of a LMTV hearing pings. We looked at each other and laughed sorta? Uncomfortably nothing ever came of it or mortar attacks other than interrupted sleep time or listening to others panic/fret. I re-classed in an And attempt to prolong my career because of sports type injuries and even though I never fired my weapon in three deployments my last deployment I saw how evil the enemy we fight truly is with the cowardly way they choose kill us. While it was an honor to serve those I helped it took its toll on me. I said all of that to say this, if you are a veteran in anyway war time/peace time take the discount, the compliment, the free meal or whatever it is someone offers. You have earned it, you worked 12 hour days, spent xxxxx hours away from family and friends etc it’s not taking advantage of unless you embellished or become a stolen valor hero. If you really want to help combat vets look into becoming mentors for them in the VA court system alcoholism and substance abuse is at an insane amount right now and we are getting arrested and charged when the root problems are mental health and the VA not having and proving enough providers. I mean they made a court system for veterans?

    • Justin Fawson November 7, 2019 at 09:16

You’re every bit as “veteran” as I am. Wear it proudly. You deserve to. – From a Disabled Combat Veteran (Iraq and Afghanistan)

      • Liza Paul November 7, 2019 at 11:21

Thank you for your service. Mortuary affairs is among the hardest job anyone could do, and the wounds it leaves are unimaginable. These wounds are deep and invisible and that’s what makes that job all the more difficult. THANK YOU!!!!

    • Mark Johnsin November 7, 2019 at 09:33

Peace time or war time, WE ARE ALL VETERANS!

    • Tom Vaughan November 7, 2019 at 09:43

I understand how you feel but as has been said, you did your part. It takes Thousands of support folks to put one small team forward. Any time you share an educational story, clarify some training point or even provide some encouragement, you are helping to keep the team better prepared.

In a perfect world, the military would never see combat but always be prepared for war. A few years ago a friend and Military Spouse noted that when I’d joined, I’d signed a blank check over to the government with my life and good health as payment amount. Thankfully the military did not take much from my ‘check.’ I’ve got a disability but I have very little in the way of impact from my disability.

Each individual gets to make their own mind up as to how they are going to play their role as a Veteran. Each individual feels different about it. Don’t stress that you’re not acting like someone else, let yourself act like you.

    • Kenneth Ford November 7, 2019 at 09:48

I served for 26 years with a combat tour in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. I lost my best friend there and two other kia’s that were in my unit. When I came home there was no welcome and I was treated like trash. I was called names that in three occasions caused fights. For years, 1968 to 2002 I kept my service in Vietnam hidden and had to self medicate with alcohol due to PTSD. Do I deserve recognition? Yes and so does every veteran that signed on the dotted line. The day you swore an oath to defend our nation then you wrote a blank check that could be cashed for your life.

    • B.J. Rys November 7, 2019 at 10:09

      John;
I see your point… I spent 20 years on active duty and never saw any actual combat. Truth be told, during the relative peace we enjoyed during that 20 year period, not all that many of us saw any sort of true “combat”. VERY different story nowadays!!!

Any “recognition” we as Veterans have been receiving is essentially a recent “phenomena”, compared to the ‘70’s and most of the ‘80’s when we were despised, and instead of receiving any discounts, tax benefits, or other deals, we were more likely paying more for the same goods or services than our civilian counterparts.

So, what I’m trying to say is, we as military retirees and Veterans, should not be feeling the least bit undeserving of any benefit or perk offered to us. You and I, along with EVERY other person who took the oath of enlistment, made themselves available for duty anywhere in the world, with NO CHOICE in the matter. We were not allowed to quit, call in sick, take a few vacation days to avoid a tough assignment, etc, etc. Over the years, I’ve had to be reminded of this by my wife and other Veterans when, like you, I started second guessing whether or not I am entitled to all this recognition.

I NEVER advertise my status as a retiree or ex-military member, don’t wear a silly hat, license plate frame, flag, nada, only accepting discounts if I know beforehand they are offered, or the clerk notices the military ID in my wallet as I retrieve a credit card and says “are you military? If you are, we offer a discount.” Next Monday we just happen to be going out to dinner with some friends at a restaurant offering a free meal on Veteran’s Day. You can bet that no one will know my status, and the bill will be split as normal.

Don’t get me wrong, I try and take advantage of every legitimate benefit, and profusely thank the cashier when I receive a discount.
We’re closing on a new home in a few weeks, using a VA loan, saving thousands of dollars in closing costs and fees. Just a couple weeks ago, I was thrilled to see $7000.00 disappear as one of the loan origination fees that the bank could not charge, due to my military retiree status. I also save about $1K/year in property taxes, thanks to extra allowed exemptions offered to Veterans. In my opinion, the ability to walk into a brand new home with $0.00 down, is one of the best benefits we have, and one I’ve taken advantage of many times since my first VA loan in ‘78 (and it’s a gift that keeps on giving, provided the previous loan is satisfied)…

To sum up, whether you believe it or not, you deserve the recognition, and by the way, thank you for your service!

    • Chris Carlyle November 7, 2019 at 10:09

Hey John, I was a Seabee too stationed in NCBM 1 in Gulfport. I didn’t go to war but did go Korea and parts of the middle east that was unsafe. I was spit, shot, and assaulted by the locals a few times for being a solider. I was away from my family for many years. It’s a sacrifice I’m proud to have made plus I appreciate the support I have from my country. All veterans should be honored because we all could have found ourselves on the front lines. I do think we owe extra care to those that was injured so their sacrifice is somewhat paid back.

    • Teresa Vandal November 7, 2019 at 10:19

John trust me, you ARE a veteran. I had similar misgivings when I was in during the First Gulf War because I was stationed on a ship that did not go directly into combat, and yet I received such ribbons and medals at the “Battle E” and the “Southwest Asia Service Medal”. I was on the destroyer tender The USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37), and we did go as far as the southern area of the Persian Gulf. I had a jerk of a second class petty officer in my chain of command who one time told me I was being awarded those even though in his opinion I did not deserve them. So being troubled by this; I asked higher up personnel not directly in my chain of command. Knowing that I was a lithographer, their response to me was this, “Did you pick up a case of paper, a container of developer, or anything else heavy while on duty to fulfill the proper operations of your shop and your command? Yes? Then you deserve the recognition! Your actions added to the proper operations of your command, and as the US Navy, as is also true for any branch of the military, is based on teamwork and us having each other’s backs, so anything that was accomplished by any member is deserving of the recognition!” This is most definitely true in your case too John, and for anyone else who might doubt themselves. So stand tall John, and Thank-you for your service!!

Also, I want to thank every single one of you vets because it is because of people like you all, the ones that came before you, (specifically WWII), that I and my family are even here today!! My parents were originally from WWII Poland and were part of the over 1 million people who were deported as slave labor to the Communist Collective Farms of WII Russia. Because of you they survived, and I am alive today!! Thank-you, and God Bless America!!

    • John B Boyd November 7, 2019 at 10:26

I am a combat veteran and I can tell you that while the sandbox sucked, the worst part of my career was having sht leaders, which I’m sure you have come across a few. My view of the world was changed by my leaders to think the whole world is sht. My PTSD is more from being at home than in a war zone. Stateside was worse than deployment for me, and a lot of others. Deployments don’t make soldiers. A willingness to protect the lives and rights of your loved ones and neighbors is what makes a soldier. Only 1% or so has taken the oath you took. It is the same oath I took. To be a soldier you don’t even have to be Patriotic and want to fight for you country, because it doesn’t matter if you joined for collage money, or just to get a job that feeds you family; the whole point is that you knew there was a possibility you may die for your whatever made you join. You are no less a veteran than any of us.

    • Aaron Bennett November 7, 2019 at 13:04

I’m a combat vet, but don’t think I’m anything special, I don’t even tell people other than close friends.

      We all served.

    • David Clark November 7, 2019 at 13:30

To me it doesn’t matter weather combat or non combat! You answered the call and wrote a blank check. Being ready and willing for combat missions is what’s important. Thank you to ALL of my brother and sister veterans!!!

    • Charlene E.Hios November 8, 2019 at 10:53

We all served. We all put our lives on the line during the Cold War. At any moment war could have broken out. I served in Texas at a SAC base then in South Korea in a combat support group in a remote ROKAF location. We were not at war. That takes nothing away from my status a a Veteran. We are all equal in that we served with our lives. If you were in during war time then that was rewarded with a medal and ribbon or badge. That is how they recognize those who served under different circumstances. We are all Veterans. Please don’t feel less of a veteran because you didn’t serve during a time of war. You should look at what was going on in the world during your service. You will be amazed how much your service made a difference to it

I am very grateful to businesses offering discounts and freebies to Vets, but I have mixed emotions too. Did 32 yrs AF, ANG, and Purple joint. Shortly before retirement, I was in my home town and my 10 month older civilian brother wanted to take me to Applebee’s for a free meal. I said I’d rather let a broke active duty kid, retiree, or homeless vet have the seat, but he insisted. He and his construction buddies were proud and it made me feel funny.
I did the cold war in Germany in the early/mid 1980s, exercises, 12 hour shifts, gas masks, etc. Deployed for Panama, no action. Deployed tor Desert Storm, no action. Four TDYs to Korea. Got into a joint special ops black unit for deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan (not on US bases). Helped do bad stuff to very bad people. The VA calls me a combat vet, but I only ran from regular mortar / rocket fire, held a dog and firearm on a very evil, just caught terrorist while a Seal or Delta dude wizzed. An aircraft that I rode on landed and the ground crew pointed out holes and we found small arms rounds all over inside, but we had on headsets and never knew. Colleagues killed camp infiltrators / attackers a few times, and often we worked with locals who could turn on you. Don’t really feel like a combat vet.

Vietnam vet, served from 1969 to 1973 and I just want to say that a vet is a vet, don’t care when you served you still volunteered to fight for your country and did not know what you might have been sent so stand up, be proud and be recognized.

    • Dennis W. Varner November 11, 2019 at 13:07

John, life is full of mixed emotions/confusion at times that are sometimes precipitated by others and by ourselves. Imagine serving as a reservist called to active duty for natural disasters and military combat tours, then being laid off within 1 year by 3 separate employers, and interviewing then working for a federal agency while being told if you left the office to serve in the military that that would be”a problem,”…then being asked to make up an excuse to your unit to not serve your fellow man in disaster recovery operations. Imagine being flooded with such subsequent confusion outside of Veteran’s Day evoking emotions of hopelessness, worthlessness, anger, self-deserving, and thoughts of suicide, which now seem to replace selfless service and joy.

Now, image that a person’s reason for service started out with a person’s choice to do what that had been taught…to do whatsoever things they are “good”…to contemplative choices of evil (in all its forms). Your thoughts belong only to you until you take action to verbalize your thoughts. Once you verbalize your thoughts/emotions or perform other actions no one may take definitive action for you or against you. Nevertheless, no one can take from you feelings of joy and peace. Good or bad, thoughts and feelings are things of the spirit, which no one but you can entertain and change.

One last thing I try to remember as a Veteran is to remember as a human we will never always be perfect and upon examination I must forgive myself and others. I must not be afraid to fellowship with others, to give and receive good
gifts, to defend against evil gifts, and to be thankful.

So as a present “homeless”/unemployed, retired Veteran, former Chemist, Commercial Truck Driver and Firefighter, I encourage acceptance of cheerful and thankful fellowship, Veteran discounts and freebies.

Denny’s is inviting all active, inactive and military personnel to enjoy a free Build Your Own Grand Slam on November 11, 2019 BUT NOT ALL VETERANS! They have rejected Veterans at Denny’s here because they did not have their Military ID! Sorry Denny’s. Never going there because they exclude Veterans….even those with a Service connected Disability like me!

      • Kirk Hine November 7, 2019 at 19:19

That’s unfortunate that some, apparently including you, were treated that way. Most places will honor your Vet status if you can instead produce a DD-214 (some will even honor a photo of an individual in uniform). If you have doubts about what documentation they will honor as an alternate proof of service in lieu of an ID card, contact the manager and ask him/her BEFORE going to the restaurant. Wait staff and/or servers may not have permission to accept alternate forms of proof, and may not feel that they have the authority to make that decision on their own (one of the big differences between servicemembers and civilians – SMs are given both responsibility AND authority). It could help to avoid an unpleasant experience, for both the vet and the restaurant staff.

Finally, dissing them for “excluding” veterans is not fair, and makes vets look ugly. Remember, they don’t have to do this (it costs them money), it’s not a “right” granted to veterans, and lastly, they are permitted to set their own criteria for proof of service. As to the last point, this is an opportunity to educate the franchisee on what constitutes veteran status. Believe me, they’ll thank you for it.

      • cpt mark scheidecker November 10, 2019 at 07:00

let me dispense this piece of advice here that I give to all who identify them selves to me that they are Vets….
Go to your nearest VA hospital TODAY ! and fill out the form to get your VA I D CARD …
1 It costs you NOTHING, SAVE your self having to pack around your DD-214. As they will look it up in the va information, I believe they can even provide you a copy there.
2 there is NO Requirement than BETTER than dishonorable discharge, and actual Active Duty.
3 It is a Photo I D accepted by all who need proof of service for Any reason.
4 There is no income requirement or restrictions nor do you ever have to use it, for any reason. But if you are in an accident and a VA Hospital is your closest, or you are out of your Private Insurance care area.. You will be glad you have that card on you….

Now he’s another thought some of us know better than others,
ALL Gave SOME and SOME Gave ALL…..but Many of Gave All that Matters to us. OUR REASON to LIve.
Explanation; last words spoken as they died on the battlefield or hospital, ” Tell (wife, mom ,dad, others close to them) that I love them. Those people for whom they lived and died. Those of who gave some also came home to find their Wife, family and friends had turned their backs to us. “SHOULD HAVE DIED THERE” (see movie “Coming Home” another Fuck You from Jane Fonda) Those are the people who have NEVER given any form of an apology. And that still goes on Today… suicide rate is Larger now than ever… think about it…

      • G K GERDES November 11, 2019 at 12:58

Well, sorry to say but if you have a service connected disability you have an ID from the VA hospital.
I understand them wanting proof of service. They give away thousands of dollars on this day. And unfortunately there are non-vets that abuse it. I have seen it at lowes and home depot.

I have always gotten excellent care at the Fresno VA and now at the San Luis Obispo Clinic and the Santa Maria clinic. I grabbed the Amazon Prime discount which is worth $40.
Our Albertsons/Vons stores are giving vets a 10% discount on the 9, 10 and 11.

I used a county VSO for my disability claim. I had all my paperwork and records that I needed. I got my claim settled in less than 1 year. I am an Air Force Vietnam vet.

    • Al Hemingway November 7, 2019 at 08:28

Thank you for your service … my sister lives in Santa Maria … the Orcutt section …

I am a Vietnam combat veteran, USMC, 1969-1970.

All honorably discharged veterans should receive the same offer … without their support that Wall in DC would be quite a bit longer.

    • Teresa Vandal November 8, 2019 at 21:24

      Hi Brian,
I hope you don’t mind, but since you mentioned Amazon Prime, I would like to add something to this that might be helpful.
My husband and I are both veterans, and he pays for an Amazon Prime account. The problem was that we were not sure if we should take advantage of it since his yearly subscription just renewed this last August. Soooo… I called Amazon to ask them about it and what they said explained that it was safe to do; that we would not lose anything because:
      1) They would first refund the value of the months used since August,
      2) Then they would redo the Prime Account to reflect the discount for this year.

So to all the veterans wondering about this; it is ok; go ahead and purchase; Amazon won’t let you lose anything….

Receiving a discount does not and should not dictate who does and does not treat veterans with dignity and respect! Just because we do not get a discount on veterans day should not be cause for you to imply that home Depot does not care. Veterans day is NOT about discounts! Period! Forget the damn discount! YOU need to get out from this entitlement mentality that you have because neither you nor I (yes I’m a veteran) are entitled to anything from any place of business! For the places that do, just enjoy your discount and say thank you, for the places that don’t, then act like a veteran (without an entitlement mentality) and go about your day. 99.9% of businesses do not give a veteran discount and it’s not mandatory that they do. It’s a perk, not a requirement. Some places just can’t do it. It might be a very bad business decision to do that. And most likely will have a true impact on bottom line. At the end of day they are still a business and need to make a profit. I’m sure you are aware of struggles that home Depot amung many others that struggle and constantly have to cut back. For example home Depot gross profit for last quarter was only 10m! That is not a lot of money for a country wide company. And gross is calculated BEFORE operating expenses, taxes etc. After all is said and done the net profit will be less then 5m. Remember . 01% of businesses give veteran discounts. So either treat them LL fairly and start listing the 1000s of business that do not offer a discount or just shut the hell up and be greatfull for the ones that do!

We will call you Home Depot Jeffery LOL HDJeffery has not taken his PTSD meds… Let’s give him a break. How many years have you worked at Home Depot? I hope your day just gets better from here lol

      • GT Lain November 8, 2019 at 08:11

I’m confused. Home Depot gives 10% off every day to veterans. In fact, they had it at the registers while we still had to wait 5-10 minutes for a Lowe’s manager to show up and do the override for the same discount. (That was a couple years ago; Lowes fixed that with the online registration.) Does Home Depot not offer that nationwide? Or have they discontinued it within the last week or so?

    • Lou vasquez November 7, 2019 at 09:03

Well ex GI , need to get your head from underneath and realize that companys who wish to give a VET a discount is also a way to bring business to there place. Yes the Vet gets a free meal but the rest have to pay. My family takes me to a free meal every veterans day, that’s 5 adults and 7 grandkids and they pay full price and l get a free meal. I am a combat Vietnam Vet 68-69 and if a company wishes to say thank you as a way for getting our business we both win, because it’s there way of saying thank you for our service and they don”t even know who l am.

    • Candace November 7, 2019 at 09:12

      Sir!

I think you may be insinuating something that is not factual.

For me, and I will speak for myself only. I am a combat veteran (many times over). I am also actively in the National Guard. I plan to retire. All my decisions. so I am not looking for an award or acknowledgement by far. BUT, I think everyone who has served knows the sacrifice for not only them and their family, but for the COUNTRY overall. For a business, any business – not to be appreciative of that. And, by my calculations any business who has a problem providing a 5% discount – is not a appreciative of the sacrifice of military folks and their families.

It is because of the sacrifices of soldiers dating sooooo far back – some that gave the ultimate sacrifice – that these businesses stands FREELY. The first people they call upon is the military. I am not acting entitled, but I do NOT contribute to businesses that do not appreciate military folks who have lost their lives (some of which you and I know and don’t know). The military is a huge group and I will ensure that my brothers and sisters are at least appreciated.

Appreciation is not mandatory, and I think 99% of veterans are not looking for them to be. BUT, it says a lot about a company who recognizes that the military does the impossible every single day and a small discount is a small token of giving back. Respect…..

Thank you veterans, for your service, and also much appreciation to active duty warriors! As an Air Force veteran, I am proud to share that “most” Meineke Car Care Centers nationwide will be doing free oil changes and vehicle inspections on Veteran’s Day. I can’t speak for all 800+ franchises, but can verify that ALL Meineke’s in Phoenix, AZ and Flagstaff, AZ are ALL IN! We will be open from 7:30am – 6:00pm on Monday, 11/11. Oil changes will be done on a first come, first served basis. Please bring military ID. We will also have food, games/entertainment, and great camaraderie.
I hope to see you there!

  97. S C November 7, 2019 at 00:07

Please don’t forget to tip the servers after your free meal on Veteran’s Day and anytime you receive one. The recommended minimum, for anytime someone else is paying for your meal, is 20% of what the meal would’ve cost.
This goes for times like getting comped at a casino as well. We have a pair of older couples that regularly come in for our $35 surf & turf special. Three of the four are retired military, one was an E-9 with 30 years, the other two are a Lt. Col and a full Colonel, both with over 23 years. The Col always pays with $140 of comps, they stay for 2-2.5 hours and leave $15-$20 for their server. If you ask me they should tip $50-$60 ($28 [call it $30] for the meal plus at least $10 for every 30 minutes you stay past an hour). This isn’t even considering the fact that the S&T is regularly $59 a head.
Man they get under my skin.

    • Frank Mose November 7, 2019 at 08:01

And how much do you leave?

      • Rich Tadrazynski November 9, 2019 at 02:32

        I’m a vet 1959-1962- US Army.
Became a Phila police officer in 1963.
I only mention this because police officers and waitresses, nurses, all seem to go hand in hand
We all see the best and the worst in people. I tip them as much as possible, (20% for poor service) let’s say till my wife gets angry.
They work very hard for minimum and really take care of a lot of us.While I’m at it, one thing that really bothers me. The phrase ” I served so that you have the right to say and do whatever you please”. I don’t believe that anymore. With all the crap that’s going on, insurection, riots, killing cops, antifa, plotting against the president. So I stand by while you do and say whatever you please?? Like hell!, I served because it was my duty, and my honor to do my part for America. I did it for the guy in the foxhole with me, and my partner in my police vehicle, not the scum that hides behind that saying. There, that’s the way I feel, and thank God for every guy and girl who wore the uniform, God bless the ones who never came home.

This is an awesome group Keith. I wish I could join (except that I don’t ride a motorcycle and am a non-combat vet) because they do some really great stuff. They installed a flag pole in my front yard and had a flag-raising ceremony for my dad who was living with me who was a WWII vet. This was 6 months before he died and it meant the world to him (and to us).

What’s really sad to me and shocking is that Cracker Barrel does not do military discounts at all ever. I always they thought them to be a military friendly place to be honest.

    • Irene A LeClaire November 6, 2019 at 13:57

On one of the lists I saw Cracker Barrel is giving a dessert and a pumpkin latte.

    • TF November 6, 2019 at 20:33

I never expect a discount from any business, however, I do expect the business to be professional when they say no. You would be surprised, if you did a little research, how much businesses donate to military charities–even Cracker Barrel.

Lowe’s gives veterans a 10% discount YEAR ROUND, and many locations have preferred Veterans parking right up front.

    • patrick k sedlak November 6, 2019 at 22:02

Lowes also covers everything in the store with the 10% discount (not selected items like home depot). in addition, Lowes limit is $500 (10% of a $5000 purchase) while home depot has a limit of $50 on the refund (10% of a $500 purchase).

      • Emily Hanley November 7, 2019 at 09:22

The only thing Home Depot hasn’t discounted for me are special Black Friday deals that are already crazy cheap. That’s all of the Home Depot stores in the Chicago area. Also, I’ve received much more than $50 off of purchases there with the 10%. Maybe yours is just like that. :(

        • India Stallings November 8, 2019 at 06:03

Same here. I recently purchased carpet for my home (with the best floor padding) and received 10% off of that total purchase amount!

Home Depot has given me at least 10% YEAR ROUND for years…THEY were doing it before Lowe’s!
HD gives it at the register…just show an ID…

Lowe’s ..you have to join their “fan club” and give up email addresses and blood type info in order to get the discount…NO THANKS!!!

      • Heather Muehleisen November 9, 2019 at 18:24

Lowe’s will stack discounts too. I went to Home Depot to purchase a washer and dryer. Home Depot wouldn’t give the veteran discount on top of the sale. No biggie… purchased it anyway. Went to Lowe’s just for giggles. They did both. Purchased it there and went back and canceled the Home Depot order.

    • Kelly B Keepin it real November 7, 2019 at 00:32

That is so awesome that Lowe’s has preferred parking. Go Lowe’s!

    • Richard Denny November 7, 2019 at 07:43

And I will NEVER buy anything from Home Depot because they only offer a discount to Active & Retired with the approved proof of service. Lowes discount is for any veteran all you need is DD-214 or VA Id. Never shop the Home Depot,NEVER!!

      • Clancy Heffernan November 7, 2019 at 09:01

        Richard,

thats weird that HD in your area doesn’t offer 10% to other than Active and Retired? Im a Veteran (Vietnam Era) and I always get a 10% when shopping there. I think it would be the same across all HD’s. I would recheck their policy. And thanks for your service,

        Clancy

      • Bob Roberts November 7, 2019 at 10:13

Not true at all, at least for me, all Raleigh NC area Home Depot stores provide a daily 10% discount to veterans. Granted you have to show proof or ID of some sort. I have a VA medical card I show.

      • P Savage November 7, 2019 at 14:44

Richard – I had the same issue, and like you – I will NEVER go to a Home Depot again – unless or until they are uniform in their policies in regards to ALL Veterans (see my post somewhere in this thread that outlines my experience).

      • Brian Rogers November 7, 2019 at 22:44

All the HDs in Maryland which I frequent give 10% discounts to all vets.

      • joe bones November 8, 2019 at 12:42

Home Depot all gives millions to support the Republican party. That is the reason I do not shop there.
No funds for the VA and active duty men and women but funds for a useless wall, like the one we fought to bring down in Germany. Thank you to everyone for the service they are and have provided to our country.

        • ml daws November 9, 2019 at 21:12

YOU are a vet ? Your lack of facts and your political opinion for the socialist/communist party is not appreciated by almost all other vets. Please take your foolish PBS and CNN, et al, parroting back to your leftist chat rooms.

        • Kayla Conner November 9, 2019 at 23:50

Joe Bones – What an absurd comment. There’s a huge difference between the Berlin Wall, which divided a city, families, neighborhoods, and a wall between two countries. There absolutely needs to be a wall on the border with the country to the south were many illegals are flooding the borders bringing in drugs, and are participating in human sex trafficking. What is wrong with your head?! The only reason the Democrats want open borders, is to flood the nation with illegals, for votes. They care nothing about you or me, or any American. They’re continually passing resolutions to give free healthcare, free benefits, free mental health care to illegals, where own people don’t qualify for the same, even though they’re hurting and in need. Even people whose children have been murdered by illegals don’t get free mental health care, they have to pay but now they have to pay for the mental health care for illegals. What’s wrong with you? As far as Home Depot donating to the Republican Party, individual owners or execs can spend their money wherever they want. It is a free country last time I checked. BTW, the Republican party has done more for this country than the Democrats ever have, the Democrats are the party of racism, the KKK, the Nazi playbook, and the do-nothing impeachment hoax, Russian collusion hoax and a planned, illegal and treasonous coup on a duly elected president all because they don’t like the results of the election. They wanted their criminal witch in place so they could continue with their corruption unimpeded. Seriously

    • P Savage November 7, 2019 at 14:17

**5 years active duty Navy, followed by 3 years National Guard. Daughter on 8th year of service Marine Corps**
I truly appreciate the Lowe’s discount, it is part of my customer profile with them, and is easy to verify any time I shop there. Home Depot, however, made VERY clear to me that their discount was for active duty veterans, or retired veterans ONLY. I had received what I thought was a straight Veteran’s discount from them a few times before. However, recently I came in to their store for a particular item and was told that the discount was only for those who retired from the military or who were on active duty.
I, like others, often feel guilt at times for accepting discounts, especially for not having been in actual combat. However, the older I’ve gotten, the more respect the selfless nature of the commitment to Country is. It isn’t ever done for “the money”, and everyone who makes the commitment knows it could mean their life at ANY TIME during that commitment. Finally, with under 10% of the entire U.S. population being a veteran (of any length of service), I feel that discount applies to a very small portion of any businesses customer base. That being said, to limit it in the way Home Depot has, so they can say the offer a “Veterans discount” is in my humble opinion, tacky at best and deceptive at worst. It was a frustrating and embarrassing conversation to have with the manager of Home Depot. Needless to say, I have promised myself I will only shop at Lowe’s from this day on. Sorry if this was a little petty – but it has bothered me ever since it happened.

  117. G Hatton November 5, 2019 at 15:05

All the varied comments about Home Depot, show that Home Depot may or may not give a veterans discount. I have shopped at some that do and many that do not. Their Vet Discount is not consistent in all Home Depot locations. So the people that say “yes they give a discount” are speaking about one they shopped at that did. Home Depot advertises that they give a veterans discount just like Lowe’s, but in reality it depends on the store and in many cases only on certain Holidays and Veterans Day, and many times you have some hoops to jump thru as not all items will qualify.

So It is quite clear that Home Depot and Lowe’s are not the same. Lowe’s treats veterans with dignity, they even have special parking signs in front of their stores for veterans, Home Depot not so much.

    • Jessica Sharp November 6, 2019 at 12:44

Home Depot does many community projects for Veterans! They spend a lot on Veterans that many people are not aware of.

      • Mike Rutkowski November 6, 2019 at 18:15

Here in Colorado Home Depot will not give a veterans discount Lowe’s is the place all Veterans are welcome and receive a 10% discount

        • Joe F Stout November 7, 2019 at 09:19

The Home depot in Grand Junction gives military discount.

    • Donna Healey November 6, 2019 at 14:22

The Home Depot in Mount Laurel, NJ, gives Veterans a 10% discount all year round. They also sponsor our organization for a Christmas Dance for adults with disabilities. I can’t speak for every Home Depot, but Mount Laurel corporate and employees are very generous!

      • Jeffrey L Mahon November 6, 2019 at 23:12

Every Home Depot I have been to in the last 15 years (3 in Oahu, Hawaii, 3 or 4 in Virginia Beach, one in Guam, one in Phoenix) have given a 10% discount. Where are the ones that don’t give a discount?

        • P Savage November 7, 2019 at 14:47

          Midland Michigan doesn’t

      • Sean McGrath November 7, 2019 at 00:02

You can not get a discount if you shop online and do a pick up. You can at Lowes.

      • Alex Ibarra November 7, 2019 at 07:01

My work had me traveling and most times had to stop at a home improvement store. I prefer Lowe’s just because they were consistent with the discount. Never been in a Home Depot where I didn’t receive a Veterans discount, but all were consistent on that not every item received a discount. They discounted the items they deemed eligible and not on the overall price. Here’s how I feel about it, if you want to give me a discount for being a vet, combat vet and retiree then go ahead. I will not refuse it but not do I look for it. Nor will I be offended if you don’t and won’t shame you about it. I didn’t serve for 20 years to get discounts when I can afford to pay full price. Just do as others do and say thank you for your service, so I can say thank you for the support.

    • Randy St Aubyn November 6, 2019 at 21:01

LA county Home Depot offers the 10% discount on all items and post several Vet parking spaces front and center.

Home Depot also limits which type of Veterans get any discount. As a retired vet I got 10% on garden supplies but not on electrical, lumber, plumbing, paint or most tools. An Army person, in uniform, in front of me at checkout was denied because he was in the National Guard. And he was on his drill weekend! I do very little with Home Depot even since the Lowe’s opened up here in Augusta, Maine.

    • Crystal November 6, 2019 at 22:46

you must have your veterans ID and it must say ‘service connected’

    • Doc Spau November 6, 2019 at 22:58

Home Depot does give veteran discounts, I have used it at hundreds of Home Depot’s. Also they have veteran parking and disabled veteran parking spaces. Just like at Lowe’s, the discount does not apply to some things, like certain lumber items. But I know Home Depot does do a ton for the military and Veterans. That’s the key reason I use them for my business and personal use. I’m a Disabled Combat Vet.

      • Robert Lamaster November 7, 2019 at 18:05

However, Home Depot does cap their 10% discount at $50. I ran into this recently when I wanted to make an appliance package purchase (about $5000). Because of this, I went to Lowes and took advantage of their 10% discount of $500.

I do still shop at Home Depot off and on, but they won’t get my business when I have a bigger purchase.

    • Michael Bunch November 7, 2019 at 00:27

I cannot comment for all of the Home Depot stores, however, the Home Depot Foundation has donated over $500,000 towards the Veterans Home in Yountville California over the past few years. This past year a team showed up and completely refurbished many of the activity areas at the home. The Veterans Home serves aged and disabled Veterans from all wars and branches. We are very thankful for their efforts and work to support Veterans in California. https://tinyurl.com/y3gaf9am

    • Romero A November 7, 2019 at 00:35

Lowe’s veteran discount: 10% off Entire store even on special order items.

Home Depot veteran Discount: 10% off certain items, no discount on any building materials ie,. Plywood, nails, dry wall etc. No discount on special order items such as cabinets, kitchens appliances.

By far Lowe’s takes care of us veterans 100%

    • I. Smith November 7, 2019 at 00:35

Home Depot only gives 10% to all Vets with valid ID on Veterans Day, they only give 10% throughout the year to Vets with certain ID’s indicating a Service Connected status.

    • Jeffrey November 7, 2019 at 00:46

    • Rich Hunsinger November 7, 2019 at 01:08

I have received a 10% discount at every Home Depot year round.

      • mike November 9, 2019 at 22:14

I volunteered a few years. I scraped and painted a disabled woman’s house. Home Depot donated all the paint and material for that house. It wasn’t a special or group house, just an ordinary house. Thanks Home Depot for caring for the common people.

    • J. Maguire November 7, 2019 at 02:50

Although I prefer Lowe’s to Home Depot, you are being very unfair to Home Depot. Lowe’s has what can best be described as a “clunky” process to “pre-register” as a Veteran, which frankly I found undignified, to use your terminology. At Home Depot, all you need to do is present proof that you are a Veteran (military/retired ID, VA ID card, or a DD 214) and you get the discount at check-out. Easy-squeezy! That policy is nation-wide, in fact (although it’s possible your store’s management may not be good about abiding by that policy). Every Home Depot I visit has marked parking spaces set aside for Veterans, too.

    • Elizabeth Angel November 7, 2019 at 07:33

Perhaps this will clarify between Lowe’s and Home Depot.
Lowe’s gives Veterans 10% off year around on regular price merchandise (not on any items already reduced or a special limited offer) provided you registered on line first. They also have preferred parking up front.
Home Depot policy is 10% off on specific holidays, however many store managers have extended it to year around. It too is on regular price merchandise. All you need is an ID. They too have preferred parking up front.

    • Theresa L Blanchfield November 7, 2019 at 07:43

Lowe’s here in Fredericksburg, VA does not give a discount unless you fill out a form at beginning of the year. The Home Depot here has always given me a discount just by showing proper military I.D.

    • Mitch Maksin November 7, 2019 at 07:43

It’s up to the individual store manager to offer the vet discounts. If their numbers are low then they’ll say no discounts will be offered.

    • Herb Lees November 7, 2019 at 11:47

HD started special parking for Vets way before Lowe’s…maybe not all stores…like you point out…but here in Syracuse, NY…yea, started out as Disabled Vets…then turned to all vets…Camillus NY planted a tree in honor of vets years ago.

    • Kirk Hine November 7, 2019 at 19:48

      A little education:

Some large national chains businesses may have two or more forms of stores/restaurants: those that are corporate-controlled locations, governed by policy set at the national HQ level, and those that are operated as franchise locations, which likely have policies set at the national, regional, or individual location level.

Depending upon the business, special deals, discounts, etc., like veteran discounts, may be mandated from the national level, and ALL locations must comply with those, At other times, they may have policies that apply to corporate only locations, but do not apply at the regional or local level, and vice versa. Some businesses may mandate a policy for all corporate-controlled stores, and suggest they be applied at the local level, but they will not mandate it for local.

As I stated in an earlier comment, vet discounts, freebies, etc. are not ours by “right.” If we get them, fine, if we get them at some locations and not others, fine also. I’m willing to bet that half or more of the time, many of us don’t even take advantage of them when they are available (I don’t use any discounts at Home Depot or Lowe’s, or at any of a dozen other places, either, and I’m retired with 20 years of honorable service).

Kwitcherbitchin, say thank you when you are offered or take advantage of a discount, and get over it. Yes, there are inequities and unfairness here in the U.S….but we served to give all Americans the right to live freely and make choices and decisions that they saw fit and which do not violate the laws of the country we love.

  119. Menchie's Frozen Yogurt November 4, 2019 at 12:19

    Hello,

I am writing on behalf of Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt. The information listed above is not entirely accurate. On Veterans Day, Menchie’s is offering veterans and active duty military (with valid ID) their first 6 ounces of frozen yogurt for free. Menchie’s locations can be found here: http://www.menchies.com.

    Thanks,
    Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt

  120. K Kelley November 4, 2019 at 06:12

Winn Dixie is giving 11% on Veterans Day
Also, there a lot of local area businesses do as well.
Dunkin, Krispy Kreme and Einstein Bagels. Einstein in my area has a discount year round.

    • El Golfo November 7, 2019 at 08:02

      Thanks for adding this!

  121. Anthony Alfidi November 4, 2019 at 00:17

Thank you to the VA for assembling this marvelous link collection. I can now go get some Veterans Day discounts from grateful retail outlets around the San Francisco Bay Area.

  123. Rodrigo Geslani November 3, 2019 at 08:33

ANY DISCOUNTS OFFERED BY AUTHORIZED RESTAURANTS/STORES WILL BE
GREATLY APPRECIATED BY A VIETNAM VETERAN LIKE ME. THANK YOU.

    • Lou vasquez November 7, 2019 at 09:33

Yes, you are correct. For us to be grateful for any company to to give us a break for our service to our country. Yet, l worked for 33 years with a company and many vietnamese employees and many under my supervision and knowing l was a Nam Vet never bothered to say thank you for my service. The Vets aren’t asking for these discounts, it”s company’s who wish to have our business, we both win. I say thank you.

  124. Lee Ellak November 3, 2019 at 07:41

Check out Chick-Fil-A to your list.. I visited them last two years on Veteran’s Day and received red-carpet treatment. They are gracious and hospitable all the time and their service to veterans is no exception. I could order any meal from their menu at no charge, which I did. It was amazingly good.

Thank you Chick-Fil-A for honoring veterans!

    • CRYSTAL NELMS November 7, 2019 at 06:50

Most Chick-fil-A will but not the Chick-fil-A at 3350 E Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, NC 28056. THEY DO NOT OFFER MILITARY DISCOUNT!! Unless they were just telling African Americans Veterans that. BTY I have a Tan DOD ID Card. Cashier & Manager said “NO, MILITARY DISCOUNTS OFFERED HERE!!”

      • Kristen Bradshaw November 7, 2019 at 10:40

Chick-fil-As are franchises. It is up to the owners. If one doesn’t treat you well, find another one that does. My daughter worked for one that was a real jerk, and another owner that was awesome.

  125. Juan Trec November 2, 2019 at 02:08

Home Depot offers 10% discount on VET Day. That seems to be its nation wide policy. The rest seems to differ by store. The HD by me gives a 10% Vet discount all year long, but they don’t publicly advertize it. I think it depends on the local store manager. Some offer that discount all year, and some dont. I dont blame them, they are trying to run a business, make a profit.

    • Jesse Johnson November 6, 2019 at 00:26

The Home Depot here in Santa Maria CA. gives a 10% discount to Veterans on selected items year round. You have to remind them each time though..

The Lowes here also gives a 10% discount on most items year around, but you have to sign up at their service desk with a vet ID, or your 214 form. They are good at checkout about asking if you are a Vet, and they identify you by your phone number. They also always say, Thank you for your service!

      • The Painted Poodle November 6, 2019 at 10:56

“You have to remind them each time though”….HAHA! No shit, how else would any of the cashiers know you’re a Vet??

        • Slowman4711 November 6, 2019 at 12:30

You can get the discount automatically by linking it to your Lowes card. I did that a couple years ago and now I get the discount even if I do self checkout.

      • Anoyomous November 7, 2019 at 05:59

In Jacksonville, NC I do not shop at Home Depot because they don’t treat all Veterans the same. They told me that we will give you the discount this time, but you are not a retired Veteran. That is why I love Lowe’s. There policy is 10% all year on all items!

      • Tim O November 7, 2019 at 07:03

Lowes and Home Depot 10% discount is year round at all stores in the U.S. With Home Depot you must prevent proof at checkout, max of $500 (5k in purchases). Lowes, you can register online and link it to your Lowes card or phone number: https://www.lowes.com/mylowes/register?context=military

    • Paul Pomykala November 6, 2019 at 21:52

Menard’s does NOT give a military discount ever. When I asked why, they said they didn’t want to discriminate against their other customers. I stopped shopping there.

  126. Don Pedicini November 1, 2019 at 23:49

OHIO. Provide your DD 214 and get veteran plates at no additional charge. (you pay your normal license Fee) take advantage of this, let the public see how many veterans there are in Ohio.

  127. mbvn November 1, 2019 at 20:20

The best veterans’ day gift is the last 48-50 years. Wish someone would thank the families that lost their veteran.

    • Old Crow November 6, 2019 at 21:59

That’s what Memorial Day is all about.

    • JDD November 7, 2019 at 03:39

      That’s done on Memorial Day.

  128. Roger Quilty November 1, 2019 at 20:00

Every store or restaurant that we go to I always ask if they give a military discount. You would be surprised at how many of them do, with a big smile and “Thank you for your service”.

  129. Dan November 1, 2019 at 13:38

Atwoods offers 10% discount year round. Took maybe 5 minutes to register phone number. Their employees are always quick with a “thank you for your service”.

    • Ana Imerman November 5, 2019 at 12:17

You sound like my father in law!

  130. Pebo November 1, 2019 at 13:14

One can also register with the VA at https://www.va.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic/ and request a ID Card. I use this everywhere when I need to identify myself as a veteran and I’ve never had any issues.

  131. Margery Cross November 1, 2019 at 00:36

Don’t forget to tip your servers when you get your free meal. They are already unpaid and we vets go in for these free meals and don’t tip. My husband and I (both vets) never leave less than 20% of what the meal would have been although we usually give our server $20 cash directly in their hand.

    • Jeff Spurlin November 2, 2019 at 11:49

Great reminder. It is so easy to forget.

    • WILLIAM QUILLIN November 2, 2019 at 12:30

I totally agree, when we go for a free meal (not often), and even when we pay, we always tip. Sometimes 20% in some cases even more. The servers who are working on Thanksgiving Day are heroes as well.

    • William McCLure November 2, 2019 at 13:57

what makes you think the Servers are not appreciative of the sacrifice all the Veterans and active duty members have given to this ungrateful Nation –Ungrateful—look at the companies who are participating and the paltry discount—I am a Veteran and I do not take anything from these Cheap ungrateful (never served a day in their life for this Nation) folks–as for the staff–are they not grateful for this one day to show gratitude –? Personally I don’t expect a thing from the ungrateful people , like those sorry democrats and Rino”s—-and no I will not be hammering folks who avoid serving, like the pajama boys and girls who Spy on our President in Washington DC and those worthless pukes who work for ABC NEWS -NBC NEWS- CBS NEWS- CNN NEWS and 90% of Fox News– and thank you and your husband for the major contribution the both of you have given to us all—

      • James R Roberson November 5, 2019 at 21:47

Simple question – What are you rambling on about ? I can’t tell if you are for or against what ?

        • David Jackson November 6, 2019 at 20:56

“what makes you think the Servers are not appreciative of the sacrifice all the Veterans and active duty members have given to this ungrateful Nation…”

Maybe it’s just you and YOUR sorry-a attitude they are not grateful for. What happened to you? Did your pill-pusher tell you that your narcissism flare up again? Or your bone spurs?

        • Dennis Bailey November 7, 2019 at 00:17

I think he s a sad, lonely and angry at the world old ass. People and businesses show their appreciation of us everyday. Paltry discounts? They don’t have to give you any discount. I think the people of this nation have gone out of their way in the last several years to show their appreciation for those of us who have served. We did a job but no one owes us shit and if anyone is ungrateful you Bill.

        • Gilbert Jackson November 7, 2019 at 06:04

Dude, get over yourself. Trump is just trying to become a dictator. Own your eyes. If you REALLY DID SERVE, then you have seen the dictatorships around the world. And don’t you realize that the stuff Trump is doing, don’t you think that if you did the same things, you would be arrested and convicted for the same things? But he thinks that just cuz he got elected president that he has executive privelidge and can do whatever he wants with no consiquences.
Good good luck, and God bless you

      • Juli Jarecki November 6, 2019 at 23:11

This is not an open forum for you to bash people. This is for Veterans to find out where there are discounts on Veteran’s Day. Now carry on and use you FB account to spew your negativity.

        • Rain November 7, 2019 at 21:36

          Ha ha! Well said Julie!

      • J Silver November 6, 2019 at 23:30

        William,

I saw a discount for a free spa water float for relaxation…. maybe you should do that. Sounds like you need it. I hope you find a way to enjoy Veteran’s Day!

P.S. before you get all crazy… I’m an active duty Marine, I’ve deployed to the Middle East numerous time, and I’ve served for 10 faithful years.

      • RP November 7, 2019 at 00:21

        Lighten up, Francis.

      • TheBronze November 7, 2019 at 01:14

Simmer down, Bill. If it’s free either take it or not. But stop fussing.

      • Patrick M November 7, 2019 at 01:23

Come on, William. You spew this garbage about a solemn day and then mention disliking “Democrats and Rino’s”… You drop the reputation of all of us conservatives one notch. It’s easy to tell the difference between the grateful and obligatory “Thank you for whatever” kinds of people. Show appreciation for the truly grateful, and thank God that the ingrates are not persecuted for their ignorance (thanks, in part, to the service of those they look down on). Either way, smile, thank them, and get back to remembering the true meaning of the day. Don’t let politics taint this.

      • Angie P. November 7, 2019 at 04:23

Don’t be cheap and act like an entitled jerk. Most servers make $2.13 an hour. Vets like you make vets look bad. Spread the love and pay it forward with a nice tip or stay home for goodness sake. Geez…

      • Walt Smith November 7, 2019 at 05:33

Go back to sleep Bill, and leave your witless political rambling in the crapper where it belongs. I’m always appreciative when companies take the time out celebrate Veterans Day. Think more, speak less.

      • Adam November 7, 2019 at 07:03

You know, the president avoided serving … just sayin’

      • G Phillipp November 7, 2019 at 07:25

Dude needs to chill! Must be one of those Vets who think the world owes them something for their service. He is unlike most Vets who serve without expecting anything in return!

      • Bryan L. gonterman November 7, 2019 at 08:35

We should actually stay on track and be thankful of the options we have as a country. No need for politics as ALL politicians, and I mean ALL, say only things to get you to side with them. Like a car salesman selling that Ford Pinto. The skeletons come out, as NO ONE is a perfect angel. So we as a nation, should be gracious anytime and thankful during the year of anything that is given to one particular group or another. WE pull together as a nation and that is what makes our country great. Other countries envy us because of our individuality. Let’s not post political views as it only instills hatred in some and jealousy in others. As a veteran, you should ask what is available in your state because every state is different on its offerings. They are not all the same as most of us know. A veteran’s opinion is strong and is usually heard so “choose your words wisely” as the veterans are idols in the public eye and we are heard in more ways than one.

    • jalistair November 3, 2019 at 01:28

Tip, sure. 20 buck??? That is more than most of my meals cost! Might as well just pay for a meal instead of tipping 20 bucks!

      • Charles Miller November 4, 2019 at 10:53

It is a nice gesture to give someone a $20 tip who just “waited on you” and then clean up the mess you just made. I am sure the couple that tips $20 had received it back many times over for there generosity and appreciation to those in service to them.

      • David Woodall November 6, 2019 at 21:35

Wow. Well that is definitely a way of showing gratitude to a hard working server of a company showing gratitude for our service.

Might I suggest a gratuity of 50% of what the meal would have cost.

      • Amile summers November 6, 2019 at 23:15

Whenever I get a free meal I always tip the server the cost of what the meal would have been

      • Romel November 7, 2019 at 01:12

It’s about the gesture and thought more so than actually saving anything. And oh yea, there’s never free lunch.. somehow someway we are still paying.:)

    • James Rucker November 5, 2019 at 08:56

I’m sure these servers can sacrifice their little tips for veterans, it’s one day out of the year where we can actually get something free for sacrificing our lives. I highly doubt the server ever gave back the tip by the way. It’s okay not to tip for a free meal, do you know what 20% of $0.00 is? or do I have to do the math for you. The company makes meals free for a reason, no one is expected to tip, so stop pressuring people to tip just because you feel like giving away money for a free meal, I think we earned a day not to tip.

      • Daniel November 5, 2019 at 20:46

As a veteran and a server you suck and should still tip. I completely disagree with this mentality and hate when people do this. I have worked at to many places that vets feel so entitled that they feel they need super special trestment and its it’s disgusting. You do not deserve speacial treatment if you cant take care of a server.

        • MrUSMCHack November 6, 2019 at 21:23

Just remember that any of these freebies and discounts are from the heart; we should be greatfull! As a disabled VET, I am always thankful that someone has the heart to take care of us. I am always upset to hear people tell me that we complain that it is not enough or that some people do not do this for us. We are much more honorable than this. As far as the server giving up his or her tips to us…what a sad thing to say. If you live in the world where you are complaining about these things: look in the mirror. Something is missing in your life.

        • Brian Holmes November 6, 2019 at 23:53

Corporate restaurants make 400% profits on the food they sell at normal price throughout the year and yet they can’t pay minimum wage to the servers? Hmmm… why do I have to give a tip just because companies are greedy? Maybe corporate restaurants should be required to pay their employees better. Until then, veterans should get their degrees and get better jobs so they don’t have to be servers instead of complaining about not getting tips. Choose your job, choose your fate.

        • David Brown November 7, 2019 at 02:18

Thanks so much, Daniel … it gives me a great deal of pleasure to know that you are well and able to grouse about the veterans who have striven, in harm’s way, to provide a good life for you and your’s. No veteran of whom I am aware has ever looked for “super special treatment” from such as you. We are a group of guys who saw wrongs and tried to make them right … we felt responsibility for the less fortunate and we did what we could to make life a little easier for them. So, fear not the veteran … we shall not ask you for anything more than to be acknowledged and respected. Nothing special … nothing free. Be well, Daniel … the veterans have got your back.

      • Jerry Ben November 6, 2019 at 10:13

Tip the servers and do it with a smile. Servers pay federal taxes, which means they contribute to the military pay of active duty and the retired pay of the retired military. Don’t be a GI Grinch!

      • giorgio gomez November 6, 2019 at 18:55

you obviously didn’t sacrifice your life since you make stupid comments. You probably did a two year hitch and got chaptered out for being a dumb ass. The company can afford to take the hit on profit loss, the waitresses can’t.

      • Spencer Day November 6, 2019 at 21:25

My mother was a waitress and depended on those tips to support us. I always leave a generous tip, no matter the cost of the meal. And I am a Vietnam Vet.

      • David Woodall November 6, 2019 at 21:51

        Very selfish attitude.

Servers work for tips, usually being paid less than $3 an hour + tips.

If you are opposed to tipping a server for their service during your free meal may I suggest Burger King, Wendy’s or someplace similar where service ends with you picking up your tray at the front counter and carry it to your table and get your own damned refills.

      • Patrick Downey November 7, 2019 at 01:02

That was 20 percent, not $20.

      • Patrick M November 7, 2019 at 01:33

Wow… It’s one thing to accept an offer, and another to act arrogant and entitled. You obviously didn’t sacrifice YOUR life, so stop sullying the memories of our brothers and sisters who did in the minds of the people who see you acting like an entitled man-child about an otherwise free meal. Just because you can strut around like you’re King for a day and not tip a penny and hoarder free stuff and discounts does not mean you should. I sincerely hope another Marine sees you behave this way with a server on Veteran’s Day… I highly suspect your opinion will be forcibly changed in the tree line, after he offers the server the tip you SHOULD have! Semper Fi!

      • Angie P. November 7, 2019 at 04:35

Don’t make vets look bad. I worked in the service industry for over 10+ years after I got out and hearing a Grinchy veteran like you really makes me sad. Don’t act so entitled and realize the servers have bills to pay too and THE ESTABLISHMENT is comping your meal therefore give them their 20% before they comp it. Additionally most servers only make $2.13 an hour. If you don’t feel like you can do that go hit a drive-thru for your free meal… show some integrity and pride in representing the Armed Forces.

      • Callen November 7, 2019 at 05:55

You, sir, are a tightwad! You should know better.

      • Adam November 7, 2019 at 07:05

What a sucky attitude. You were probably a blast to work with.

      • Kathy Katie November 7, 2019 at 07:06

Many servers make far less than minimum wage and rely heavily on their tips. Have a little Grace yourself and leave a tip. You may actually feel a little less selfish too!

    • Edward November 6, 2019 at 13:37

I always tip the percentage of original price. We vets get plenty of bennies for our service… the wait staff rarely gets minimum wage and no health insurance. They work for tips!

    • Alex Jones November 7, 2019 at 05:15

Check your local laws, some servers make more than others. For example California servers etc make minimum wage other states it’s $2 an hour. Depending on what state I’m in depends what my standard tip is

  132. Amy Jones October 31, 2019 at 23:08

Please , please educate yourselves with the benefits of the VA. Also, many people have written about bills for ER visits. Make sure you or someone else calls and notifies the VA of your hospital visit within 72 hours of you presenting to the ER.

Also, familiarize yourself with the Mission Act . There is a wealth of info online about the Mission Act.

Self education is imperative. All patients in the VA and outside the VA have to advocate for themselves these days. This has been key in the care my husband and father receive as Veterans.

    Finally, HAPPY VETERANS DAY!

    • tom rezek November 3, 2019 at 18:08

more info on emer room visits. thanks

    • Deb Blackmar November 5, 2019 at 16:19

Yes, the COMPANY gives us free meals because it is their choice. The waiters and waitresses didn’t choose this, and they make well below minimum wage. The tip is part of their salary. You also do not know if they have or have not served in the Military. We always start the tip at 20% and will stay at 20% if they earn it. If they are rude or give horrible service it goes down.

    • Karen Machuca November 7, 2019 at 01:18

Amy, I don’t understand why some VA centers charge for visits and in other states everything is free.

  133. Sandy Baker October 31, 2019 at 20:25

I’m a veteran, and donate a Rottweiler puppy each litter to a 100% disabled veteran for Service Dog. Find me thru the AKC. My amazing female is expecting to deliver Veterans Day. I near Missoula Montana and don’t ship puppies.
Veterans helping veterans is what it’s all about.

    • Howard Ray Carter Jr. November 2, 2019 at 14:47

      Sandy,

      Good afternoon.

My name is Howard Carter and I am a retired, 100% disabled veteran and I would love a Rottweiler puppy. I can provide documentation upon request.

      Respectfully,
      Howard Ray Carter Jr.

    • Tim Singletary November 3, 2019 at 05:30

Hi Sandy – Back in 1999 while station in Germany I had a male Rottie. He was an amazing gentle giant. He died of cancer and I never could bring myself to get another one. Now that I’m a 100% I have been seriously thinking about getting a service dog to help me cope. I live in NC and not sure who who would train him to be a service dog. Anyway thanks Tim Army Vet 6/43 ADA

      • Deb Blackmar November 5, 2019 at 16:21

Howard Ray Carter Jr. thank you for donating a pup!! That is very generous of you.

    • Rick November 3, 2019 at 23:02

You should contact Dog Tag Buddies in Billings. It’s a great program.

    • Jerry Ben November 6, 2019 at 10:16

Sandy, you are a great patriot and good human being! Thanks for donating a pup from each litter to a 100% disabled vet. I salute you for your service and your continuing service to vets!

    • Amile summers November 6, 2019 at 23:27

Thank you Sandy my Rottweiler service dog was absolutely without a doubt the best all around dog I have ever owned! I’m not sure why so many overlook them but they are true gems. If I lived conus I would get one of your pups! Thank you again both for your service and support!

  134. Ronald V. Erwin October 31, 2019 at 16:28

Many wineries in New York’s Finger Lakes Region give a Veteran’s discount. Some are 15% You have to ask.

    • Richard Gallemore November 2, 2019 at 13:11

Hi Sandy. I think my organization, Gr8Ter Veterans of Spokane would like to work with you. Please contact our CEO, Nick Richardson through Facebook? Thank you! And thank you for your support of the Veteran Community.

  135. charles benedict October 31, 2019 at 16:06

Rodizio Grill in Denver is offering the following for Veterans Day 2019:
Veterans Day Celebration – Nov. 11-14, Veterans eat free with purchase of one Full Rodizio. Proof of Service required.

  137. Beverly October 31, 2019 at 14:43

All of this sounds wonderful.. sad thing is that if you… NO IF I live in Manderson WY 82432 there is absolutely nothing there for me with out going at least 90 miles away… so so much for veterans. I am however glad that it is there for those that can use it..

    • Richard Fruehauf November 7, 2019 at 02:30

Most veterans do not have a military ID. Only active and retired have this. Many restaurants do not offer veterans a free meal or discount because they require a military ID. In short, they are not honoring the majority of veterans who have served their country.

      • mike November 9, 2019 at 22:28

WOW I have used my DD214 for many years to get free or discounted services and meals. Sorry you can’t use yours.

      • Kayla Conner November 9, 2019 at 23:32

Every veteran can get a military ID. They just need to do it. It’s called being responsible.

  138. Sylvia J Strickland October 31, 2019 at 13:55

I went to the South Carolina DOT and showed them my DD Form 214 where it states that I served and was honorable discharged. They redid my Drivers License and issued me a need one with the word Veteran written on it. Thank you South Carolina DOT for honoring those of us who served the 4 years. During my time frame 1964 to 1968 as a female I could not stay in the USAF and have a family. Thank goodness that law changed for those who followed us.

    • Ron Williams October 31, 2019 at 18:25

Texas Roadhouse gives 20% discount all year in Corona CA. Ron Williams

    • Raymond Barr November 1, 2019 at 13:29

That’s cool. California has started offering this for an extra charge if you go to the Vet Center and bring a form from them showing proof of service. Strangely, the actual military ID card in my wallet or a DD-214 was not acceptable at the DMV. It had to come on a specific form from the Vet Center and we had to pay extra to put the word on our DL.

    • Richard B November 11, 2019 at 10:29

Florida does this as well – adds “Veteran” on the front of your DL when you bring in appropriate documentation. FL also has a variety of military service tags (all branches, Purple Heart, specialty plates such as submarine service, etc.)

  139. Ken Schuster October 31, 2019 at 13:42

Music streaming service TIDAL.com offers a year-round active and veteran military discount, including their ultra HD “Master” recordings.

  140. Howard Bennis October 31, 2019 at 13:35

In Greenwood In. the Home Depot gives 10% discount with ID anytime. I ordered merchandise (over $300) on line and received the discount when I went to pick it up. Our (or all) Lowes requires an advance sign up.
As for the VA, I enrolled at the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. I have had nothing but good, timely, competent service including prescriptions. (I am a retired paramedic and understand the medical system) There is also a new clinic (Wakeman) at nearby Camp Atterbury that offers general services with less travel.
The local Golden Corral always provides a good free meal on Veterans Day. There is usually quite a line.

  141. Athena Fleming October 31, 2019 at 13:04

Lucille’s Smokehouse and Bar-B-Que in California and Arizona is offering free dessert on Veterans Day (Nov. 11th) on top of 20% off meals.

  142. Joseph Kwasny October 31, 2019 at 12:47

The Lowes in Schereville, Indiana would not give me the discount on a clearance day washer also I received a complete left knee replacement at the Jesse Brown Medical surgery center in Chicago 8 years ago, it was the best move I ever made as I have had no trouble with the new knee since.

    • B Plummer November 4, 2019 at 00:24

I live in Texas. Lowe’s gives me a discount year around. I would call the corporate office.

      • MACK HAGEWOOD November 5, 2019 at 15:38

They dont give discounts on “ clearance” items…can’t really expect a double dip.

  143. Steve Wilcox October 31, 2019 at 12:41

A few years back my son, also a vet, and I took advantage of the free meal at Applebys. The line extended around the block and he said: “What better way to celebrate Veteran’s Day than to stand in the chow line for an hour!”
Thanks to Appleby for the recognition.

    • Laura Ward October 31, 2019 at 13:33

Sometimes the lines are long, especially if you are in a small town with only a few of these establishments. What was outstanding about the line and wait was that I walked around and introduced myself and met so many great veterans, including a WWII vet. Not many of those left! It feels like a big military reunion. :-)

    • Gr Wi October 31, 2019 at 14:10

Lowe’s, Home Depot, et al don’t give the 10% on clearance or super sale items. Bought Whirlpool fridge on sale and did not get the 10%. Everyday retail WELL OVER $2,000, paid just under $1,600 and free delivery and setup. I’m happy; does no good if they sell for less than they paid and end up closing their doors.

  144. Don Radomski October 31, 2019 at 12:28

I get 10% military discount at NAPA auto parts as well.

    • Scott Curtis November 1, 2019 at 08:05

If you tell Autozone, o’riellys, advance they will also give you the 10% discount.

  145. Don Radomski October 31, 2019 at 12:20

We have a few Home Depot and Lowes in our area. Lowes has been consistent in their veteran discount policy. A few years ago, one of the Home Depots refused to offer the discount though the others did. When I asked I was told it was up to the store manager. Well, that manager moved to another store and tried to stop the discount there. He was overruled.
Wherever I am shopping I ask about discounts, veteran, senior, AAA, etc. The answer varies, as does any discount.
In the ‘Nam era showing your military ID card might get you mugged. Now I am constantly amazed by all the folks who say “thank you for your service” and mean it. Thank you all for caring.

    • Pat Soong October 31, 2019 at 21:05

You can register on-line for Lowes, they offer an every day Veterans 10% discount. You’ll need to have a copy of your DD-214 as proof that you are a veteran.

Home Depot on the other hand only offers the Veteran discount on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. If you’re still on active duty, Home Depot gives a 10% discount to active duty personnel with a valid ID every day.

      • CHET crump November 1, 2019 at 11:07

My Home Depot gives 10% to retirees as well.

  146. Steve Giddings October 31, 2019 at 12:14

Rock n Brews offers a free pulled pork sandwich meal on Veterans Day

  147. John Michaud October 31, 2019 at 12:09

Just a word about the VA Hospital in Northport, NY and the VA clinic in Patchouge, NY.
Been going to both for about a year now and had extensive treatments at both facilities.
I have had wonderful experiences at both: courtesy, professionalism, personal attention and efficient medicine Rx implementation.
Also a word about the DAV volunteers, absolute commitment to service, thank you all very much.
    Long Island Verteran.

    • Lara Kracek November 6, 2019 at 22:19

LOVE Northport VA, only been to Patchogues CBOC once but was very quick and friendly!

  148. Judith Robinson King October 31, 2019 at 12:06

Foodlion grocery store gives 10% off on Veteran’s day.

  149. Milt H Heger October 31, 2019 at 12:01

Safeway on Veteran’s day. You will have to ask for it unless they spot something you are wearing but if not then ask.
    ~
Olive Garden should as they usually do.
    ~
Next year please set up a printable list option. Thank you!
    ~
Thank you ALL my military sisters and brothers for your service!!! :)

    • Christin Brown November 7, 2019 at 01:48

The first Saturday of the month. Safeway gives active duty and veterans a 10% discount.

  150. E.A. Blumberg October 31, 2019 at 11:52

What you all need to do if you don’t have a valid GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID CARD, is Google Military ID cards. They will list several bases or agencies that issue these cards to the veteran AND his/her spouse. They ate called, EXCHANGE, COMMISSARY AND MWR CARDS. The vets card is good forever and the spouses card must be renewed every 5 years. This is a DOD/UNIFORMED SERVICES CARD. It will NOT be refused ANYWHERE! I’ve used mine at base exchanges, base commissaries and also base recreational activities and facilities. This is the ONLY card you ever need even if you have a VA issued medical card. Some places do not accept the VA card! It’s not on their list of approved forms of military ID.

    • Scott Curtis November 1, 2019 at 08:09

I have a pic of my dd214 on my phone, after I blew my knee out in the Navy and the doc’s at Balboa in San Diego butchered my knee. I’ve never used a gov. Med facility.

      • Menueon November 9, 2019 at 03:26

You can also take your DD214 to the DMV and they will put a legal vet logo on the back of your state ID and drivers licenses.

    • Walter Morton November 3, 2019 at 23:10

Thank you for the info., I was not aware of this.

    • William Robotham November 6, 2019 at 23:48

You can only get the military ID if you are getting 100 compensation or disabled, VA furnishes the request form.

    • Dr Carroll Lastinger November 7, 2019 at 09:52

Below is the current info on all ID cards available to veterans (and their requirements and benefits):

  151. David Barclay October 31, 2019 at 11:38

Applebees in Dublin GA, about 100 yards from VA Hospital property did not allow discount on Veterans Day last year. The waitress said it had already been observed one day earlier.

  152. James Smith October 31, 2019 at 11:37

I have been treated very well and very respectfully at the Milwaukee VA Hospital,( Zablocki). Every time I go, at least twice a year, I notice how very busy it is in the hallways and waiting rooms. Yet almost all of the workers and volunteers there are very helpful, always considerate, upbeat, and engaging. Many of us patients are either older, in pain, frustrated, or depressed. The Doctors and nurses always listen to me and my questions, and take the time to explain the answer, or give me directions. I know they are listening because they even chuckle a little at my silly comedic comments. I just want to thank them for their time, patience, and understanding. I need to thank my Primary Doctor Bhatia and the local Cleveland, WI VA Clinic also. They do a very good job with my annual checkups and miscellaneous health issues during the year.

  153. Elliott A. Arthur October 31, 2019 at 11:28

Laramie Aviation Resources in Laramie, Wyoming offers a 5% discount on all flight training and pilot supplies to all Veterans with an ID or copy of DD-214.

  154. John Lombardi October 31, 2019 at 11:16

If you buy something online from Lowe’s they cannot verify you are a vet, so no discount. You can then bring your receipt or order confirmation to any Lowe’s store, show your veteran’s ID and they will refund the 10%. Home depot will not do that.

    • Jason Kertz October 31, 2019 at 12:32

You can register as a Veteran by logging onto Lowes website. Once registered your military discount will automatically be taken off on online orders.

    • Robert jodoin October 31, 2019 at 12:42

You need to register you are military at Lowe’s beforehand and you will receive the 10% online or in the store all year long. Home Depot does not give you a 10% online, you need to bring in your receipt.

      • Charles Lord Sr. November 3, 2019 at 02:32

The Lowe’s discount is not capped. It is 10% of the entire bill. Home Depot limits the items and has a cap on the amount of the bill that can be discounted.

    • Ruthe Perdue November 2, 2019 at 21:41

If you register online, it will add the veteran’s discount to your account. You will automatically get it either in store and online.

    • Tim Tucker November 9, 2019 at 20:40

That’s a fact and they thank you for your service and have parking in front for veterans. I was at home depo and treated like a bum no discount

  155. Wayne McHatton October 31, 2019 at 11:04

Big 5 Sporting Goods Store gives Veterans a 10% Discount year round.

  156. Greg Wilson October 31, 2019 at 11:02

Moonlight Automotive in Franklin, IN (599 Earlywood Dr., Franklin, IN 46131.) Phone: 317-535-0400 for the entire month of November will give any military person active or retired $10 off any oil change with military ID. OR 15% discount off any service repair.

  157. Harry Truman October 31, 2019 at 10:34

I have been to two VA hospitals; Orlando, FL and Johnson City TN. Orlando tried to kill me and Johnson City was pure incompetence.

The bumper sticker was right “The VA, Giving Veterans a Second Chance to Die for Their Country!”

    • Wally O'Brien October 31, 2019 at 12:22

Hines (in the Chicago area) and their local office in Hoffman Estates.

10/8 I was diagnosed with diabetes at an extremely high level.

Over the next two weeks, I saw my doctor, a dietician, a nutritionist, a pharmacist, an endroconologist, had numerous blood tests taken and a CAT scan. Received all my medications on 10/9. Went to a diabetes basics seminar. ALL of my medical people had access to the same medical records, which private doctors do NOT have.

Had problems? How much did YOU do to resolve them.

My VA care has been GREAT.

Harry Truman? So why are you afraid to use your REAL name?

    • Dan Dailey October 31, 2019 at 19:46

VA is my primary provider. I have had nothing but excellent service from them.

    • Kevin Mcgre October 31, 2019 at 19:47

Sorry you don’t get good care in your area. I get all my health care at Boston, MA VAMC facilities. I’ve always received very professional and competent service. Recently had hip replacement surgery and follow-up physical therapy. I went from extreme pain and increasingly limited to even walk, to surgery, and now back on my feet able to function again in comfort. I hope the VA can standardize quality health care for all veterans soon.

  158. Timothy Feig October 31, 2019 at 10:28

AutoZone, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Advanced Auto all give a 10% veteran or military discount. Remember, most corporate chains delegate the authority to give discounts to the local store management. If the cashier does not want to give the discount, ask to see the manager. Sometimes explaining that the competitor across the street honors the discount is all the prompt they need! :-)

  159. Fred Stevens October 31, 2019 at 10:10

Just an FYI, if you are any were close to Southern California during the listed dates below. You can find additional information on their website. My wife and I go every year, two or three times. Happy Veterans Day!!

    November 3 – 21 and December 2 – 19, 2019

Active, Retired and Veteran U.S. Military Personnel may receive free admission to Knott’s Berry Farm for themselves and one guest from November 3 – 21 and December 2 – 19, 2019. See the list below of accepted forms of ID.

Up to 6 military discount tickets may be purchased for $42 each when visiting from November 3 – 21 and $48 each when visiting from December 2 – 19, 2019. Military discount tickets are available for purchase at the Knott’s ticket booths.

For information on special Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel rates, call 866-752-2444.

  160. Bill Samole October 31, 2019 at 10:04

Both of Lowe’s and Home Depot offer 10% discount to veterans all year long. However not all Home Depot stores treat the discount the same. My local Home Depot will not give discounts on appliances, plumbing supplies, lumber and some other items. My local Lowe’s gives a 10% discount on everything no exceptions.

    • Roger White October 31, 2019 at 12:10

You are right on Lowes. Lowes gives all vets 10% on everything even sale items. On the other hand Home Depot in my personal experience will only give all vets a discount on veterans day only, the rest of the year you need to be a card carrying service connected disabled vet to get a discount for which I qualify but that leaves other vets out the rest of the year. Their discounts are limited on some items like to you stated and on sale items no discount.

  161. Laurie Bailey October 31, 2019 at 09:50

The Omelette Shop restaurant offers a free meal for veterans. I just show my license that proves I’m a vet. Also the casino in Williamsburg is offering a free buffet and free play credit.
Just a reminder to tip servers well because unfortunately some veterans are not tipping on veterans day and it’s giving us a bad rep.

  162. Linda Denissen October 31, 2019 at 09:42

FLORIDA VETS! Kennedy Space Center is FREE for Veterans Day and previous weekend (Nov 9, 10, 11)! Normally $57, this is a GREAT deal for any vets in the area wanting to visit (includes up to 3 guests). Check out kennedyspacecenter.com, click on “tickets” and “offers”. See you there!

  163. Marc Salmon October 31, 2019 at 09:38

Hey now, I hear they got 10% off all year round for veterans at Lowe’s and Home Despot! I heard it o lawdy I heard it!

    • Dave Haycook October 31, 2019 at 10:00

Year round at Lowe’s for ALL veterans. Only at something like 5 selected holidays at Home Depot. You can even sign up on line or at Customer Service in Lowe’s so it’s tied to your phone number. Only have to show prof one time this way.

    • MSgt Wheeler October 31, 2019 at 10:12

      Not any more… only 5% :(

    • Larry Hitchcock October 31, 2019 at 10:33

Marc 10 percent at Home Depot, just show your card, Lowes you have to sign up for which is a pain and you get 5 percent

      • Thomas Dullaghan October 31, 2019 at 11:44

        Larry, it’s 10%. @ every Lowes stores.

        • Mary Lou Laird October 31, 2019 at 14:34

This is not true about all Lowe’s. The one in Marble Falls, TX only gives 10 percent on regular priced items. If it is on sale you get 5%.

        • jim johnson November 1, 2019 at 22:51

I spoke to Lowe’s management and was informed that corporate had implemented giving5% on sale items recently…10% daily on all other

        • CAB November 6, 2019 at 23:14

Even though Lowes makes you sign up for the discount I find it more convenient than Home Depot because if you don’t have your ID card with you then you can still get the discount. At first I was hesitant because I was thinking here we go again another sign up for another store but believe me its way more convenient.

    • Bernard Baruffalo October 31, 2019 at 11:14

Lowe’s military discount is year round but Home Deposit discount is limited to select holidays

    • Ermine Todd October 31, 2019 at 11:16

That discount applies to disabled vets with VA ID. On veteran’s day, the discount is available to all veterans.

    • HOWARD J THOMAS October 31, 2019 at 12:34

WOW, a great deal! I think $57 is awful high even for a regular adult to pay. They only give about $5 off on other days. Might take the trip up, its been awhile since I was there. Thanks for the info Linda.

  164. Scott Nussbaum October 31, 2019 at 09:21

This is not true…you don’t need to be retired to get the discount at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Just served. You can sign up with both through their websites. I didn’t retire from the service but get the discount at both all year long.

    • Paige E. Hill October 31, 2019 at 13:53

In Tallahassee, I’ve received the 10% off every time I have gone into Home Depot.

      Say Harry:
You should try the VA hospitals in Detroit, MI (yeah, THAT Detroit) and the VA in Madison and Tomah, WI. I received excellent care for both chemotherapy and massive surgery for my damaged back which is so healed now that I feel 40 again (I’m 65). Sorry that those VA’s haven’t kept up the the latest quality practices of the other ones for us Vets, Take Care.

I love my fellow soldiers and veterans. Thank you VA for your excellent care.

All Delta Sonic car care centers of Buffalo offer the top end wash and wax AND a free oil change on the 11th only.

  167. Tom Bennie October 31, 2019 at 08:41

Home Depot does NOT give a 10% discount on several items, It seems most of the items not included are in the Construction related area. Lowe’s gives a 10% discount on all items even on some items that are on sale. Home Depot doesn’t give 10% on sale items. Lowe’s will also give 10% on internet sales Home Depot doesn’t.

    • Timothy Feig October 31, 2019 at 10:18

This depends on your local store managers. I have always received a full 10% off, or more sometimes, even when I was a builder. I would usually save large purchases; ie.- tools, lumber, appliances; for Veterans’ Day, and never had to ask twice. They do have a limit of $200 discount, but I have sometimes even received more than that. 10% is not a lot, especially for retail with a 40-60% markup, but it covers the tax and then some.

    • Passing Through October 31, 2019 at 10:52

I get 10% off at HD, even sale items.

    • Tim Tucker November 9, 2019 at 20:46

Home Depot will not give you a discount if you pay with a company card

  168. Ed Wecker October 31, 2019 at 08:24

Lowe’s has been giving 10% military discounts year round for many years now. Not only that, they also have preferred parking spots reserved for Veteran’s. Home Depot finally followed Lowe’s lead but it took awhile. Several time I went to Home Depot and got a blank stare when I asked about military discounts when Lowe’s was aggressively promoting them.

  169. Rick Cook October 31, 2019 at 08:18

Guys/Gals ..this isn’t an article about how bad the VA is ..let’s talk about the GOOD things that are for Vets here …C’mon ..

    • Wendy Thomas October 31, 2019 at 10:04

Hi Marc – Yes Lowe’s and Home Depot have year-round discounts for military personnel and veterans. I can’t recall how much it is, but you do get a nice discount. Just show some type of ID (could be a county ID where you registered and provided proof you were a veteran with the DD214) to validate you are a veteran even if you didn’t retire from the military. I use it all the time at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Usually, you have to register the first time at customer service, but afterwards it’s just a matter of showing your ID card to get the discount.

Home Depot offers 10% discounts all year. I use it all the time. Thanks Home Depot.

    • John Dunn October 31, 2019 at 11:13

Last time I was in Home Depot I was told the 10 percent discount was only for “wounded veterans” needless to say I was taken aback. I shop at Lowe’s now.

  172. Paul 30474 October 31, 2019 at 08:10

As noted, Lowes 10% discount is all year long. But also so is Home Depot. At Lowes they just need your phone number and proof of being a vet. Home Depot prefers a VA Vet card. Not that hard to get, Just need to send them a copy of your DD-214. See this site for how to get a Vet Card.

    • Shaunna Joyce Phillis October 31, 2019 at 09:14

Home Depot has limitations to what you may take your 10% off of, i.e. major appliances. Lowe’s has always allowed 10% off everything, including appliances and stacking cupons and discounts.

    • Amy Woodside October 31, 2019 at 09:15

Home Depot does not require a special card, just your VA healthcare card or your driver’s license with Veteran on it.

    • E Blox October 31, 2019 at 09:29

My Home Depot only takes the VA ID that reflects your disability rating, and the discount is not applied to construction materials. Lowes only requires you to sign up online and is on everything but contractor labor.

  173. Russ October 31, 2019 at 08:08

Almost every place anywhere will give 10% off for veterans if you ask if they offer it. Even online. 365.

    • Nicole Malloy October 31, 2019 at 10:11

Home Depot, at least near me, only gives the discount to retirees, active, or disabled. I have been denied the discount several times, told it is only available on Veterans’ Day. Lowes however is all year for all vets.

  175. Marian Laird October 31, 2019 at 07:58

It s good to know that veterans are still being honored on veterans day, wirh a free meal for them. They give up so much to serve our country..

  176. Charlotte Green October 31, 2019 at 07:53

Lowe’s offers a 10% Military Discount on eligible purchases to extend our gratitude to those who have served or are currently serving our county in the US armed forces. The discount also extends to their respective spouse. See https://www.lowes.com/l/in-store-services.html#MilitaryDiscountProgram for more information.

    • Peggy Carlock November 5, 2019 at 07:10

Enough already about Home Depot vs. Lowe’s. Clearly, not all policies are created equal, even within brands. Just ask at your local store what Their policy is. If it’s not satisfactory, tell them you are going somewhere else and Why. Then do it.

  177. Rex Livingston October 31, 2019 at 07:52

Denny’s give veterans a free grand slam on Veterans Day

  178. James Abel October 31, 2019 at 07:51

Home Depot does 10% year-round as well, and you do not have to register on their website like you do for Lowe’s.

    • Shannon E October 31, 2019 at 08:29

Home Depot gives retired and active military a discount every day. Veterans who have served, but didn’t retire are not eligible for the discount.

      • Elizabeth C. Hying October 31, 2019 at 08:54

I didn’t retire. As long as you served honorably and have proof, eg driver’s license with veteran logo on it. That is all they ask for unlike Lowe’s.

      • Amy Woodside October 31, 2019 at 09:13

Home Depot accepts your driver’s license if it says Veteran on it. They also accept your VA healthcare card. You do not have to be active or retired, just have to prove that you served. I shop at Home Depot all the time for my rental business.

      • Scott Nussbaum October 31, 2019 at 09:20

This is not true…you don’t need to be retired to get the discount at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Just served. You can sign up with both through their websites. I didn’t retire from the service but get the discount at both all year long.

      • Yvonne Clendenen October 31, 2019 at 09:39

That might be a local thing- because my husband and I have both received the 10% off and neither of us retired.

      • James B. October 31, 2019 at 09:43

Maybe the applicability of the discount is at Home Depot store manager discretion? All of the Home Depots in my local area offer the 10% discount to veterans all year round.

      • Aaron October 31, 2019 at 09:49

IDK, I get 10% off at HD every day of the year and didn’t retire.

        • Ken Evans October 31, 2019 at 10:16

I believe the HD and Lowe’s difference for Veteran’s Day is that they are extending the discount to ALL veterans. While on active duty I was eligible for the discount every day and as a Retiree I maintain that same eligibility. Perhaps the distinction is ID card holders always receive the discount, while those who no longer hold a valid ID card but do have a DD214 are eligible only on special occasions such as Veteran’s Day.

        • john v meagher October 31, 2019 at 12:18

Aaron: Do you mean Harley-Davidson also give a 10% discount?
          Door Opener 714

      • Carl October 31, 2019 at 10:09

It depends on the checkout person you get at HD. Some will look at my card and give me the discount, others will pull out a list of cards and deny my discount.

    • Donna October 31, 2019 at 11:10

Not true here in Santa Fe. The HD limits their veterans discount to a small & select number of products while earning the goodwill of a “veterans discount”. Shame on them. We choose to shop at Lowe’s where they offer a discount on all their merchandise, respecting Veterans by making their discount simple and inclusive. They’ve earned our business.

  179. Tina Acevedo October 31, 2019 at 07:46

Thank you to all the business owners who remember the sacrifices others have made so they enjoy the true American dream. This is why when I shop or eat out I go to those places that remembered my service to my country for over 22 years.

  180. Richard Midgett October 31, 2019 at 07:44

And just think, the VA hospital has gotten better depending on where you are located!
The Veteran Administration Medical Training Center (VAMTC) in Spokane, Wa. Seems to be a good one!
I entered the SYSTEM in 1972 thru the Dallas VA. It was the nastiest place I had ever seen for a hospital!
Been living all over the western part of the USA….
Been in 4 different VA hospital Mental Wards & Spokane is the best! They keep ICECREAM, sandwiches, cereal, milk and we just sit around, no real programs.
The only bad thing is u don’t get to take ur meds like I do at home !

As does the Lowe’a in Wasilla, Alaska. Generally speaking Alaska is extremely Veteran-friendly year-round. Brings tears to this Viet-Vet’s eyes.

  186. Jim Phillips October 31, 2019 at 06:09

It’s nice to know there are those out there who truly care enough to donate some of their time and services to those who have served. I look forward to visiting some of those who are being so generous on this one day a year that recognizes and honors us. Thank you

  188. Rod Ii October 31, 2019 at 05:44

Olive Garden usually does have a free menu item for Veterans. They will even give you a raincheck to use within a week. Little Cesar’s usually has something from noon to 2 pm (I think it’s one of their lunch boxes). Pilot / Flying J usually has a free hot beverage for Veterans. Denny’s has a free build your own breakfast from 6 am – noon

  189. Jonathan Bach October 31, 2019 at 05:41

Home Depot ALSO does the 10% off every day.

  190. Patrick Odaniel October 31, 2019 at 05:37

Funny home Depot is on this list as they offer the same discount year round

    • Deb Spalding October 31, 2019 at 09:16

Which makes them more generous than the rest because it is year round and not just one day :)

  191. JOSEPH P. FINN October 31, 2019 at 05:35

In response to James Tobleck15. I have been dealing with the VA for over 40 years now and I have had no problems with getting any kind of treatment, including a knee replacement. I live in the Boston area and after speaking with other veterans from around the country that come here for treatment because they all say that the BEST VA FACILITIES are in the Boston area. I’ve spoken with one Veteran in Brockton who said that she had to come all the way to Boston for her treatment AND, the VA paid for her transportation. Maybe your in one of those areas of the country where the treatment isn’t that great then just move to an area where the treatments good since it means that much to you to have good medical
    Just a thought brother.

    • Mahadi DeJesus October 31, 2019 at 08:50

I endorse that sentiment.. I moved from the Washington, D.C. area seeking a Kidney Transplant as well as PTSD treatment. I landed at Northampton (Leeds VAMC) and I am soooo glad I did. The New England area really strives to take extremely great care of the vets that enter their facilities. They sent me to White River Junction VAMC to assist in my Pre-Transplant assessment requirements. After spinning my wheels in D.C. for over 5 years, in 13 months after relocating to Mass., I received a new kidney, thanks to the Leeds VAMC coordinating with Hartford Hospital (CT). As for the PTSD, I was submitted in a 6 week inpatient program that helped me identify, manage and cope with my suffering… I recommend all Vets that are suffering, to come to Leeds VAMC and seek out Ward 8.

    • Sean McGrath November 7, 2019 at 00:04

So does Lowe’s, but they even give the discount online, not The Home Depot :(

  193. Gloria Hunter October 31, 2019 at 05:32

How and why does the VA dismiss widow’s pension for a person who really needs it. Because of that denial I am not able to so staying the things that I had before my husband died such as a car food on the table and just keeping bills paid I have to file bankruptcy and lose my van because I can’t pay for it and the insurance that goes with it what can I do and thank God the fellow veterans I have to file bankruptcy and lose my van because I can’t pay for it and the insurance that goes with it what can I do and thank God the fellow veterans all receiving appreciation for their duties and their service amen

    • Deb Spalding October 31, 2019 at 09:23

Go to Lawyers for Vets to see if they can help. They only get paid if you win. They get a percentage but it is worth it. If you are in Indiana call Andrew Rutz. He did an awesome job for me after being denied an increase in disability.

    • JRW November 7, 2019 at 01:17

Gloria ~~ the VA follows the laws congress writes. Do not blame the VA for following the laws, ask congress to change it.

  194. Jeff Toms October 31, 2019 at 05:30

To my fellow men and women who served, Happy Veterans Day and thank you for your service. To all the businesses, organizations and people that show us their appreciation on Veterans Day, God bless you.

  195. Sheila Goodwin October 31, 2019 at 05:08

I had knee surgery last year I told the Dr.at the VA that I had a serious problem with de-solving stitches always ended up with an infection.I seem to have an allergy reaction to them have even ended with blood poisoning from them.
Looked at me like I was stupid ,crazy or both said he had never heard of that one. Went to have metal outside staples out on a Monday nurse called the Dr. told him I had infection inside the knee he said just finish taking out the staples She will be alright without even having seen me.
Had to have a neighbor drive me the 70 miles to the VA emergency room that following Friday had a 103 temp Ended up in the emergency room with a bad infection from de-solving stitches inside the knee -they sent me over to his office . He sat down in front of me says yea looks like an infection ,takes a pair of sterile scissors out of the package and jabs them in my knee I nearly punched him in the face.(Wish I had now) The pain was so excruciating felt like he hit the metal in my knee. His reasoning was easiest & fastest way to get to the infection.Set me back months on recuperating from the surgery.
The majority of people working for the Asheville Va are great ,dedicated, caring people but some of their doctors need attitude adjustments as well as learning that one size does NOT fit all nor just because they have a medical degree does not make them vastly intelligent or GOD. No one knows our body’s better than we ourselves do after all we do live in them.

    • R. A. Inc October 31, 2019 at 09:48

Sheila, I am Retired Vet, Health Care Provider in Surgery and just had both my knees replaced. While I can’t say it was your sutures that caused the infection, I’m surprised that the Dr. didn’t see you in that initial follow up appt. That is a big problem since you progressed into a full infection. As far as the “jabs the scissors in my knee” part, IF he actually did that without warning/consent then he needs to be investigated by the Hospital. That would be malpractice. I encourage you to report him and let them investigate. Infections DO HAPPEN. Sometimes it is the medical team, sometimes it’s the patient or a combination of the two. I feel for your situation and I followed my Dr. advice about infection t the letter just because I dreaded getting an infection. I’ve seen those knees and hips come back and it’s not good or easy on the medical team or the patient.
As a side note, I would Google “Suture material causing infection” of even contact any of the major suture companies on line and research their experience about what suture is prone to infection. Some suture does cause irritation/inflammation but NOT infection unless it was not sterile to begin with. It might provide some answers for you.

Hoping you get it sorted out and heal quickly.

      • pat ming October 31, 2019 at 12:02

Had two knee surgeries by VA. First was at the hospital in Oklahoma City, OK. The second was through Choice VA here in Van Buren AR The first went great, the second took almost a year to get all of the swelling out of it I forcefully tell the Doctors and Anesthesiologist that I do not tolerate it well. In all instances, you must stand up for yourself if you know something is wrong. It doesn’t matter if it is VA or Private. Choice VA is a good thing for VETS, I could not get our VA Hospital in Little Rock to do the first surgery so the orthopedist in Fayetteville, AR put out a call for anyone and OKC picked it up..

  196. James Miller October 31, 2019 at 04:56

Modern Auto, in Fruitland, Idaho gives free oil changes, and inspection of vehicle on Veteran’s Day. They also give you a t-shirt commemorating the event, and pot luck is served as well. Last year they took a group photo of the Vets and Employees. You do have to reserve an appointment. Good service at Modern Auto!

    • BJ Kerns October 31, 2019 at 11:10

Home Depot gives ALL Veterans, Active Duty, Retirees a 10% discount.
I have 6 in my area. As long as you have proof of service (Veteran, Retiree, or Active) you get a discount.
      Same with Lowes
If your Home Depot is only using VA ID with Disability Rating then you need to call the HD Main Office.

    • BJ Kerns October 31, 2019 at 11:15

My mother had both knees replaced by the VA. she got recurring infections.
It was determined that because of the condition of her teeth, ( infections in gums) the infection was going to the least path of resistance, the metal in her knees. The VA took care of her teeth and she never had another infection.
Everyone should consider oral health as it affects your heart as well as ANY and ALL implants or foreign materials in your body.

I am the caregiver to a Veteran. Our mom’s were best friends, since i was two yrs old. so i have known him for 63 years. it evolved into a care giving contract when he was just out of a hospital, and hated where he was staying. barely short of being homeless too. So i arrange and take him to all VA appointments, and the doctors have really been there for him and supportive of him. . But yes, it does take along long time, to get through any health issue, and i do not feel it is the Doctor’s fault. it is a System… and it could take many years to get things overhauled but i see it happening. My Dad was A Veteran also , and had PTSD so bad, it tore our family apart… and he never did recieve full disability before he passed away. Just like so many still living today, they will not live to see what they hoped for and the help they are seeking. It is going to be for the generations to come. I am so sorry.

  201. perry T dilley October 31, 2019 at 04:13

I am grateful for the HUDVASH program which helped me get housing, but am also very angry because it seems they really don’t care about how you feel and what you need in your life. I had a girlfriend and never did i hear anything positive from my case workers, statements such as you can do better than that, we will not support you being with her and constantly little threats you can lose your housing voucher if she comes over more than 7 times in a 6 month period. seems they want us alone, lonely and i am because i now am alone again. 4 years i have not had a relationship. i have a hernia which for over 2 years they have refused to treat and is very embarrassing and disgusting to me. which does affect my mental health stability, gross as my girlfriend put it and would not have intimate relations with me eventually leading up to ED. which the doctor laughed at me when i brought it up asking for help. i cry every night because of my loneliness and now will not even try to find a girlfriend anymore. i feel like its all over and all i wanted was someone to be in my life a companion. guess this is it though i dont want any medical from va and actually hope i die soon because i cant stand the loneliness the pain i feel inside. i’m giving up on ever having anything good in my life worth living for and have turned to heroin instead. you can say it’s an escape and you are right, atleast i dont have to deal with my pain when i’m high. they dont mind me being on heroin near as much as they did me trying to have a girlfriend. this is all i’m gonna be till the day i die (SOON HOPEFULLY) i hate my life. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. TO ALL MY BROTHERS IN ARMS HAVE A GOOD VETERANS DAY BRO’S.

    • Peedee Wyre November 3, 2019 at 09:18

Hang in there, Perry. We all have medical and mental problems. Talk to AmVets, DAV or other VSO rteps, including “Swords To Plowshares.” Heroin isn’rt helping tour attitude, and that is from someone (me) who knows about substance use/abuse.

  202. John Pilge October 31, 2019 at 04:10

At Home Depot there is a Veterans Day SALE every year for all customers. There is not Veterans Day discount for Veterans.
Like Lowe’s. Home Depot does have a Veterans discount throughout the year. It is conditional.
At Home Depot, the Veteran Discount DOES NOT apply to on-line orders.
At Home Depot, the Veteran Discount DOES NOT apply to not-in-stock items that must be ordered.
At Home Depot, the Veteran Discount DOES NOT apply to commodities such as lumber, drywall, nails etc.
    (They don’t have a list.)

I haven’t used the Veteran discount at Home Depot. The self-serve checkout does not have a setting for it. You need to wait in line at the Pro Desk.

    • William D. October 31, 2019 at 08:53

Not completely true. I used the self checkout all of the time and just get the attendant to apply the discount for me. Not only are they very friendly and nice, they always thank me for my service. My Home Depot is in Durham, NC.

      • Howie Irwin October 31, 2019 at 10:52

Home Depot does not give the Veteran’s discount on sale items nor items not in stock that have to be ordered. Lowes does discount every purchase. I prefer HD, but the discount policy can be a big deal. For example, we replaced all of our appliances – all had to be ordered – HD would not discount them and Lowes did

    • jeff donnellon October 31, 2019 at 08:56

I buy nails at HD and get the discount.

I use the Veterans discount to buy lumber and other building materials all the time at Home Depot. They have never not given me the discount for anything I have purchased in store. You are correct about on-line and special order items.
On the other hand, because you have to register as a Veteran to get the discount at Lowes, the discount is automatically applied when you order on-line. The only time Lowes has not given me the discount is for promotional items that they have to get from an outside vendor.

      • Tee Ellis November 4, 2019 at 16:39

Lowe’s changed their rules on the 10% discount now. They no longer offer the discount online. You have to go to the store and show your ID to get a discount. They have also changed the rules on certain items. For example, special buys, clearance and sale items. The store told me this after I tried to place my online order (with a discount).

    • Kenneth Deemer October 31, 2019 at 09:36

Lowe’s discount applies to everything every day including clearance items.

    • Amy Woodside October 31, 2019 at 09:39

I use my discount at Home Depot all the time and have never encountered any of these “conditions” you mentioned. I have not tried to use it on-line as I usually just go into the store. While it is true that the self checkout does not have a button for the discount, all you have to do is call the attendant over and they can punch it in for you; you do not have to wait in line at the prodesk. As for not in stock items, I have used it on special order windows. I also use it all the time on commodity items as I have a rental business and am always making repairs and improvements to my properties.

    • E.A. Blumberg October 31, 2019 at 11:05

There is help at the self serve check out! Ask the cashier/ attendant at that station and she will look at your ID and scan a code into the checkout and you get your discount. I use it EVERYTIME I shop at HD!

  203. Thomas Martinez October 31, 2019 at 03:30

The va has been very good to me. Yes they have there problems. They also are overwhelmed by sheer numbers of vets. If you can navigate through the process . The free meals as are greatly appreciated.. I believe home depot gives 10% year round also. So this Viet name era vet thanks you.

  204. Jerry Knox October 31, 2019 at 03:17

The home depots around me always give me a 10% discount if I ask for a military discount.

  205. Earl Powell October 31, 2019 at 03:16

All vets and active should be treated as though it is veterans day every day.

    • Jamie Jedamski October 31, 2019 at 11:59

I totally disagree with your statement . I’m detecting a little bit of entitlement. I’m a vet.

  206. Pamela Gay Conley October 31, 2019 at 03:14

I have had nothing but good treatment through the VA. In July 2017 I became very ill after eating. Thinking I had appendicitis, I went to the ER. Next thing I know, I am being rushed into emergency surgery at the local hospital where I lost all my lower bowel due to it just dying. No one knows why. I was fited with an Ileostomy. I spent 2 days in ICU and another 10 in the surgery unit. After I went home, I did not get better and suffered for the next 7 months. I couldn’t eat anything and lost 40 pounds. I finally went back for the 15th time to the ER and was rushed into surgery again because the first surgery had strictured and all my intestines were backed up and ready to burst. They rebuilt the ileostomy again and I finally began to clear. The VA paid for all of the surgeries and gives me all my supplies at no cost. My surgery was 78,000 dollars! They did throat surgery to widen my throat at the Salt Lake City Veteran’s George E Wallen hospital and did a good job. When I went back for my 1 month checkup, I fell and broke my left foot and they had to do surgery on it. They did a really good job with that too. In October last year, I had my C5/C6 disc replaced in my neck and they paid for all of that. They have been really attentive to my PTSD and my depression and have done all my PT that I had to have for my recent hand operation where they paid for my right thumb to be repaired. The PT was very professional as well. I also was recently fitted with hearing aids for high pitch hearing loss. I did not have to pay for any of them. They were 5,000 dollars. I feel that I have been blessed to have the VA. If they do something I feel is wrong, I talk with them about it and we correct the issue. I recently had some very important medication stolen out of my locked mail box and they replaced it within 1 day. I don’t understand why so many people have such a poor opinion of the VA. You have to advocate for yourself if you think they haven’t done something right. They always listen to me and help me to correct things for me.

  207. Gerald Zilly October 31, 2019 at 02:33

Both Lowe’s AND Home Depot provide me 10% off all of my in-store purchases every day of the year. All I need to do is show my VA or VFW ID card at the checkout register. So, above “Veterans Day Retail” info indicated here is inaccurate.

  208. Steven K Skouson October 31, 2019 at 02:30

For those in the Phoenix AZ area, American Discount Foods has a 50% off sale for Vets and active duty people. It is 50% off your first $50.00

The VA outpatient clinic in Beaumont, TX has been wonderful to me. The availability and quality of service is unmatched in this area. Mrs. Williams in the lab and Dr. Marietta Dancel are the very best.
Thank you, VA for all you do for me.

  214. ALEJANDRO B MEDRANO October 31, 2019 at 01:03

It’s amazing what veteran’s get in honor of their service to OUR and THEIR Country. !0% off the limited menu, half a sandwich of your choice, a free drink with the purchase of a designated meal, 10% off at Home Depot on Veteran’s day (what a deal) Oh and a free haircut at SOME locations. Did some of us serve 10% of our lives in the military for the freedom 100% of OUR country is enjoying? Did our families send us a free drink with our care packages while we were deployed? Some of us didn’t get a haircut for months much less a chesse burger with all the trimmings, a large fries and a milk shake! But……..that was a long time ago……and now things are different…the almighty dollar is what on the frontlines…NOT US!

    • MrUSMCHack November 7, 2019 at 07:13

      Just remember that any of these freebies and discounts are from the heart; we should be greatfull! As a disabled VET, I am always thankful that someone has the heart to take care of us. I am always upset to hear people tell me that we complain that it is not enough or that some people do not do this for us. We are much more honorable than this. You forgot a couple of questions;

Did they sign your enlistment contract?
Did your enlistment contract say that everyone would have to kiss the ground that you walk?
Do YOU know that YOUR attitude Is the reason that some companies will withdraw their kindness because of ungrateful people?

If you live in the world where you are complaining about these things: look in the mirror. Something is missing in your life.

In New Market, Virginia, Rouss Theatre & Center for the Arts is offering Veteran Appreciation tickets to Veterans, November 15-17 and November 22-24, 2019.
The show, “The Middle of Yesterday “, by Ken Jones, deals with a WWII veteran diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. His memories take him to the 1930’s & 40’s. It’s a poignant, well written play that treats both Alzheimer’s & military family issues with an eloquent perspective.
For more information, visit: http://www.rousscenter.org, or the Facebook page. Group rates are available. For more information on these rates, or show details call Rouss Center at 888-341-7313.

  220. Jim Romo October 31, 2019 at 00:40

Replying to Richard Hess: Visit the hospital where you received your emergency treatment and get copies of ALL the medical procedures done for you on the date of your visit. (Will be several pages) Make four or five copies and mail (CERTIFIED MAIL) to the VA hospital where you normally get treated. Also send copies of any/all billing statements you are getting for service rendered to you on the date of your emergency visit.

For example: To Department of Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles VA Health Care System (get their address from the computer) ALSO mail a copy addressed like this: To:Department of Veterans Affairs, Payment Operations & Management).
The address will usually be the same … just going to a different department.

I went through something similar but my medical team is at the VA Hospital in Loma Linda (Gerry L. Pettis Veterans Memorial Hospital). They took care of everything after I mailed them ALL THE MEDICAL RECORDS … be aware though that it too a little while. Don’t be afraid to contact your area’s Congressional Representative too.

    GOOD LUCK

  221. Joseph Emery October 31, 2019 at 00:31

I know how you all feel. I’m 100% disabled and homeless. Served my country for 100 years and now they dont care at all. I so wish the corrupt VA would stop breaking their arms patting themselves on the back and actually do something.I have completely given up in life now and only wait to die.
    Peace.

    • Peedee Wyre November 3, 2019 at 09:38

Joseph Emery: If you are Rated 100% Disabled by the VA, you are receiving $3100/month. But if YOU are saying that YOU are completely disabled (in YOUR OWN subjective assessment), you need to be in touch with AmVets, DAV, or some other VSO (Veteran Service Organization), and also the Patient’s Advocate at your local VA clinic or hospital.

  222. Cynthia Barber October 31, 2019 at 00:29

For those needing help with claims for benefits:

PLEASE find the nearest DAV to where you live. You can Google DAV chapters near me or, better yet go to the dav.org site. Scroll down to the “FOR VETERANS” header and follow the links.

The DAV has been a life altering organization for several members of my family. Myself, my spouse, our daughter, my Dadad and brother-in-law, also family friends.

DAV is the one organization that doesn’t require you to join our be a member to get help. We joined in 1996, so that we could pay it forward and give support to help other Veterans and/or survivors and dependants.

    • Cody Scholberg November 9, 2019 at 12:35

im afraid you’re the exception rather than the rule. i wouldn’t recommend DAV if i was you, but the specific person at the DAV you worked with.

i had them for 2+ years as my vso, and they never even one time returned any of my voicemails or emails, never one time answered the phone, i had to get an appointment by walking in and scheduling it for later and when i came for it, they didn’t know anything about disability claims. i have NEVER met such a bad, fake entity in all my days. and i am afraid that this is common with vets. the organization is truly terrible. i am quite glad they helped you, but recommend and praise the individual who helped, instead of them.

  223. Mary Hanson October 31, 2019 at 00:28

My husband and I enjoyed many of these offers in past years. Now he has died. Anything for widows?

  224. Cynthia Barber October 31, 2019 at 00:19

  254. Harry Davis October 30, 2019 at 20:59

Has Home Depot changed their every day policy on veterans discounts? Your article indicated they are giving a 10% discount to veterans for in-store purchases on selected items on November 11th. For as long as I’ve shopped at Home Depot the 10% veterans discount was store wide, year round not just on November 11th. Hopefully, this is an just inadvertent misunderstanding.

Don’t forget that Lowe’s gives 10% off to Veterans 365 days a year, not just on Veterans Day weekend.

    • Rocky Bryant October 30, 2019 at 20:43

Home Depot is not a veteran friendly store!! Lowe’s is a year round veteran team!!!

    • Ken LaVerdi October 30, 2019 at 20:45

Pretty sure Home Depot does too. At least my local HD does, and the have a dedicated parking spot for veterans up close by the pregnant mothers spot. But I love the fact that both lowes and HD give the 10% off year round.

    • john hickey October 30, 2019 at 21:17

It’s 5% off if the product is on sale

    • John Signorelli October 30, 2019 at 21:25

So does Home Depot for 365

    • Ronald October 30, 2019 at 22:52

      So does home depot

    • Robert Odey October 30, 2019 at 23:16

Home Depot and Culverts does also 365 days a year with a valid Active or retirement ID card. Wonder why they have it saying only on Veterans Day?!

    • joshua bazan October 30, 2019 at 23:26

      So does Home Depot

    • Noel Stanhope October 30, 2019 at 23:44

To include Veteran parking at the Daphne Alabama Lowe’s….they go out of their way for the Vets!

    • Doug Pruner October 31, 2019 at 02:55

      As does Home Depot.
I believe that HD exempts some items from discounting but Lowe’s does not. Check with store.

    • James Miller October 31, 2019 at 04:51

Home Depot has been giving 10% off hardware items year round to Veterans.

    • Anthony Derks October 31, 2019 at 05:04

Home Depot does too. I’m confused as to why that’s on their list.

    • Michael Smith October 31, 2019 at 06:14

But Home Depot only gives active and disabled veterans a discount year round. I call the company a fair weather friend to veterans.

    • Paul D Gunderson October 31, 2019 at 06:27

Yes, that’s one of several reasons I don’t shop at Home Depot.

    • Ed Carter October 31, 2019 at 06:45

And Lowes also has “Veteran Only” parking spaces, usually near the front of the store.

      Hooah!

Lowe’s actually cares about Veterans unlike Home Depot which just pays lip service to retirees and mailbox money recipients who don’t need the discount at all!

Thanks for Society appreciation ,to bad the VA beauracrates are killing 8000 vets a year due to incompetence, uncaring to fix the very system that keeps patients from treatment. The Inspector Generals office is a national disgrace that the FBI should bring to trial. The total failure to investigate whistle blowers complaints by vets. , staff, and allow the very people whom are corrupt to retaliate against us. I nearly died in March due to malpractice, malfeasance yet your Director and patient advocate have done nothing. 43 years of delayed treatment of bone on bone instead of a knee replacement that the Army surgeon recommended and every doctor since INCLUDINGVA doctors only to be overruled by hidden committees. Bankruptcies, divorces, lost homes and homelessness over and over. This is the VA i know and hate . This Veterans day is my day not the beauracrates day.

    • Frank warchol October 30, 2019 at 22:14

The VA provides primer medical care to over 7 million vets —- the largest medical system in the world. Do some fall through the cracks ? You bet… let’s be grateful for, the best part, great medical care. Let the candy asses complain…

      • Peedee Wyre November 3, 2019 at 10:01

Frank: I am a happy and proud VA patient since 2009, including chemo for Agent Orange… but the VA is the largest med org in the U.S., *not* “in the world.” With over 1,000 clinics and over 100 hospitals, and 375,000 employees (over half of whom are also Veterans), Unfortunately, chances are that there will be some f-ups just because of the sheer numbers involved. Lucky me, though, I have had Class-A care, respect, humor and great care during more than 300 appointments here in the NorCal/Bay Area VA clinics and hospitals (Oakland, Martinez, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Mare Island, Sacramento). Fabulous people, top-notch care.

    • Sterling Williams October 30, 2019 at 22:34

My only comment is that the Ralph H Johnson VA hospital in Charleston, SC has given me excellent service. Had a total knee replacement in 2018 with the best treatment you could receive anywhere.

    • Renee McGowan October 31, 2019 at 00:18

Hello my Veteran brother. I am in total agreement. I have only been getting worse with care from the VA Healthcare System here in my hometown of San Diego CA. They have “red flagged” me more than once for demanding they fix my bullet wounds with something other than band-aids, metaphorically speaking. I’m not going to go into detail, but, I CAN say that I had a little job in Travel Pay here and my experience there only strengthened my belief that the whole VA prefers to keep us veterans sick instead of helping us maintain our health honorably.

  264. Richard Hess October 27, 2019 at 15:47

IT’S PROBABLY LATE BUT I ALMOST DIED AUGUST 2018. WENT TO OUTPATIENT CARE IN GARDENA,,FOR VETS. THEY TOLD ME ,, AND I QUOTE,” WE KNOW THE WEST L.A. HOSPITAL IS TOO FAR SO GET YOUR ASS TO EMERGENCY AT LITTLE COMPANY OF MARY IN TORRANCE,” MAYBE 2 MILES. NEXT THING I KNOW I HAVE CORONARY HEART DISEASE, AND A BILL FOR 20 GRAND. VA TOLD ME TO GO THERE .. I’M DIAGNOSED WITH PTSD.. PANIKING MY ASS OFF . WHAT DO I DO???? I HAVE ALL THE PAPERWORK.
SIGNED SCARED AS HELL. RICHARD HESS

    • Cindy October 30, 2019 at 20:57

I had a similar problem but I got it cleared up. If you have seen your PCM at the VA in the last 2 years, the VA will pay your bill. Or if you have the proof that the VA sent you to the emergency room, please go to your Patient Advocate at the VA and they will help you get this cleared up. Mind you it will take about a year so make sure you are contacting the people that are charging you and explain that the VA is taking care of it but it is a slow process. They should give you at least 4 months and if the VA hasn’t paid, call the billing company again and request another extension.

The VA told me multiple times that they wouldn’t pay but I kept pushing it until they did. They had given me a PCM in the Community so that was the big challenge so I had to keep explaining that I would have seen a PCM if the VA didn’t send me into the Community.

Hang in there, you got this!!!

    • Ellen B Wentzel October 30, 2019 at 22:09

Write to the Office of the Inspector General. You can do that online. You can also contact your patient advocate. Veterans organizations at the Regional Offices also have people to help.

    • Chris Williams October 30, 2019 at 22:30

      I will help you.

    • Robert Odey October 30, 2019 at 23:04

Call the VA, patient advocate office. That happened to me also and the VA picked up the entire $150,000 as I was in intensive care for a week. The left coronary artery (The Widow Maker) was 98% blocked and I lost half the function of my heart But I’m alive!

    • Michelle October 30, 2019 at 23:33

Give the bills to your va. It happend to me also and they told me to go and then they paid the bills.

    • Renee McGowan October 31, 2019 at 00:25

Richard, you need to talk to referral services or choice or whoever is in charge of billing should be able to tell you where to start. That’s how it WAS done down here in San Diego three years ago when I was a volunteer in Travel Reimbursement. If they sent you, I hope you have paperwork to back it up or they will basically tell you to Golf Foxtrot Yankee. I’m sorry that’s happened to you, my veteran brother. I hope you are better. Maybe there’s a Vet Center up there that can tell you what to do?

    • Greg Marsh, Disabeled VET October 31, 2019 at 00:30

Gen an Advocate and listen to him. Lawyers for VETs can be found in the greater Denver area – should be yours too.

    • Mike Akstull October 31, 2019 at 02:00

I would think you would not have to pay the bill since the VA told you to go there. It all depends on your VA coverage in the first place, your class too.

    • Jack G. October 31, 2019 at 05:49

Call your County Veterans Service Officer now. Good luck!

    • Hennessey October 31, 2019 at 06:11

Don’t worry. I’m telling you this because I recently had a heart attack and was told to go to the ER as well. Contact this number. 1800-771-6106 ext. 7002 or 1-877-881-7618. Be calm when you make this call so that you can be heard. It is very frustrating process but stay the course.
Leave a voicemail with your full name, last 4, contact number, name of non VA hospital, date, and reason for visit. I hope this helps.

      Tina … Army Vet

    • Greg Frazier October 31, 2019 at 07:25

Call your Congressperson. Same thing happened to me and my Congressman took care of it. Calling VA will only make you feel worse because they will keep telling you that you are talking to the wrong department

  265. James Albert Amoroso October 27, 2019 at 15:37

Great thing for military personnel and retirees.

    • Mike Bailey October 31, 2019 at 00:58

. Get an advocate with the AMERICAN Legion, or, the Disabled American Veteran’s to submit your case for you and guide you through a long and slow process by explain to the VA your “emergency medical status in order to save your life.

  266. Matt Storms October 27, 2019 at 12:39

Lowe’s does 10% off all year long for veterans.

    • john hickey October 30, 2019 at 21:21

Lowes is 5% if the product is on sale. 10% on full-priced goods.

    • Sandy Bell October 31, 2019 at 07:41

Home depot does too + if Menards has the 11% they will match that on top, simple form to do on line, so you get 21% off

      • Kenneth Deemer October 31, 2019 at 09:49

Menards does NOT offer a VA discount unless they just started it very recently. Home Depot have a lot of restrictions on what it applies to,

Lowes offers it on everything including clearance items.

        • Tee Ellis November 4, 2019 at 16:33

I am registered online with Lowe’s and was getting my discount online and in-store. Just recently I tried to place online and it wouldn’t allow the 10% discount even though I had been getting it. It said I have to go to the store to get the discount now. Now, you can’t give them your phone number and automatically get the discount. You have to show them your VA card. Also, they’re not allowing a discount on sale items, special buys or clearance. They’re cracking down. I guess since anyone can go in to shop and use someone else’s phone number.

  267. Sharon C. Fahey October 27, 2019 at 10:53

Lowe’s offers a 10 percent discount anytime to veterans and active duty.

    • Dave October 31, 2019 at 00:24

      So does Home Depot.

      • Bert Nowak November 11, 2019 at 16:12

No, Dave, HD only offers 10% for “service related” disabled vets on a daily basis. Occasionally they offer 10% on holidays such as Veterans Day, etc.

  268. Blanche Johnson October 27, 2019 at 09:56

Our veterans should never sacrifice more then they have already endured….pray we always pay it forward and honor their service with pride and dignity. Always great to see true patriotic gestures.

    • Joan Strandjord October 30, 2019 at 21:00

My husband and I are very thankful to the great team at the Indianapolis Rhodebush VA Hospital. With their help along with the Viera Fl.VA clinic we will spend this thanksgiving with our family now almost 5 years since they found a “shadow” on the liver while doing a chest x ray..The doctor called us on the RV phone to alert us to have a biopsy immediate;y. No better doctors, nurses and social workers are in the public……………………….Jo & Ron Strandjord
