The article is misleading. There is no VETERAN DISCOUNT….there is an ACTIVE DUTY discount.

I love it when all there is are critical comments. If anyone understood the financial background of Amtrak they would see a service struggling to survive. There’s no other experience like it and to survive people need to be encouraged not fed a line of me me me. Me me is the fake news.

I would just as well use the AmTrak Senior discount over the VA discount “NOT AS MANY RESTRICTIONS.”

I love Amtrak, and I am grateful for my 10% military discount.

I am a vet and have been riding Amtrak quite a bit. Some people are so ungrateful! I absolutely love it. I am also a member of Amtrak Rewards Program. It gives me a special phone number to call and they take care of everything for me and answer my questions on the best way to do what I want to do. I usually take the train from Portland OR to Seattle/Tacoma area. I’m there in 2 hours and it’s still not a long enough ride for me. I asked a friend of mine if she had ridden Amtrak before and I planned a trip for us to Monterey, CA. She absolutely loved it. My bucket list includes taking Amtrak from Portland OR up I-5 corridor to Vancouver, Canada then take the Canadian Line Eastbound across the Provinces. Please stop your negative whining-you may find life a lot more enjoyable when you do!

Cry me a river, my brothers….you guys are just full of complaints, and yea, I’m a combat Vietnam Army Veteran…

  14. Walter Hynson October 17, 2019 at 22:55

A total waste of time and money to even advertise a fake news discount.

    • Peter Jr Galong October 20, 2019 at 12:51

I agree. I was told I am already buying their lowest priced ticket so they can’t give anymore discount. This also does not apply to business class.

  15. O J Smith October 17, 2019 at 21:33

Is Amtrak going to service Mobile, Al again?

  16. Clifton Head October 17, 2019 at 18:31

Amtrak, nightmare in the making with no help. Wife and I took Amtrak from Chicago to Spokane to see our kids, had a sleeper room with a bathroom and shower. This was over $2800. The two chairs that set by the picture window were broken and you could see that they were broken just walking in the room. We told the person that was responsible for the rooms about the chairs she said nothing could be done. So just think Chicago to Spokane with no chairs available to set on. Had to use the bottom bunk. Call Amtrak and all they said was we will take $200 total off your tickets for your next travel. Not even we sorry.

  17. Hoover E Hodge Jr October 17, 2019 at 17:02

Exactly the type discount I’ve come to expect from the VA.

  18. Wesley Oglesbee October 17, 2019 at 15:34

My thanks to the many company’s that offer real discounts to vets. The auto sales dealerships stand out the most. I wish I could name all of the ones that I know give the discounts. Just ask when you are out looking at cars.

  19. Jessie Tharpe October 17, 2019 at 15:08

VA probably need to check your quality of resource prior to posting a big headline of what you are providing and what quality and cost for their service. Looks about like80 pct of the responses are very negative.

  20. Phillip J Norton October 17, 2019 at 12:48

After considering the many restrictions and reading many of the detailed and informative comments I find that this alleged 10% discount offer borders on being an Amtrack/VA SCAM! Would anyone in VA upper level administration ride Amtrack under these or any conditions? NO! That speaks to what it is worth.

    • Bob Brinkerhoff October 17, 2019 at 17:03

  21. jimmie roan October 17, 2019 at 12:48

this is the first sentence, Veterans receive a 10% discount on the “lowest available rail fare “on most Amtrak trains. so one contradicts the other. how can you discount a fare that is the lowest available then restrict it.

  22. Ronald Beattie October 17, 2019 at 12:30

I served in the 101st Armored Cavalry National Guard in Brooklyn, NY from 1952 to 1955 and the US Air Force Security Section from 1958 until 1961.
I would like to take the train from Columbia, SC to Washington, DC. When I checked in 2004, The train runs very seldom through Columbia and one stopped at a deserted station here at midnight or one a.m.. Is that still the case. If there is a train, What are its hours and what is the cost for coach weekdays?
    Sincerely,
    Ronald Beattie

  23. John Denegard October 17, 2019 at 11:05

Why would you ride Amtrak? Like, legit question? I just did some checks and it is 2.5x the cost for an upcoming trip, and 5x the duration. Flying round trip will cost me 350, for my up coming trip. Amtrak, wanted 800+ for the trip. The Flight I am taking is a one stop, 6 hour total flight time. The Amtrak time duration? 36 hours from start to finish with 4 stops and changes. I would love to ride the rail as I hate flying, but I can tell you this much, I ain’t ever gonna ride the Amtrak.

    • elcaliente October 30, 2019 at 13:07

Amtrak is subsidized by the federal government, you pay the enormous amount to allow congress members to “sponge” a couple hundred. do you think their gonna let you slide without the payoff ?

  24. Fred Jones October 17, 2019 at 09:59

At first, I was pleasantly surprised, and was going to share on FB; but, then I saw the stipulations. Personally, I think active duty should ride free. If you think about all the government subsidies used to keep Amtrak going through the years, perhaps most people should be riding free, since our taxes ultimately fund those subsidies. Amtrak is a joke being played on all of us, along with all the other bullshit we deal with on a daily basis (like those constant big pharma commercials) that keeps us in a constant state of BIGGER, BETTER, MORE, MORE, MORE…can’t get enough…keeps the economy rolling…keeps us all pissed off, unhappy, never satisfied, spend your money, get rich, work your ass off, build a new house for the kids, send them to college, get a new car for Sally, send Jimmy to med school, go to Europe, get drunk, smoke a doob, drop out and get some viagra, find a sweet young blonde with big…whatever…. It goes on and on and on…the endless wheel of life on Earth…keep bitchin’ Y’ALL! Enjoy :-) IT’s THE AMERICAN DREAM ;-)

  25. Yes I Am A Veteran October 17, 2019 at 09:52

You people are bickering over ten percent. Gimme gimme gimme. That’s all the modern culture thinks about. Get some real problems like the rest of us.

    • Paul Crocker October 17, 2019 at 16:46

THE VA AND AMTRAK SHOULD GET MARRIED..
BOTH ARE USELESS AND IMPRACTICAL,I THINK .
I’M STRESSED , JUST IMAGINING BEING IN THE
      COMPANY OF EITHER ONE…

    • C.Y.N October 18, 2019 at 13:00

It’s not the “Gimme gimme gimme” that has so many of us ticked off, it’s that companies use a “military discount” as a marketing ploy to advertise how patriotic they are, but then no one can use it, or worse, EVERYBODY who has AARP or AAA can get a better deal.

  26. Edward Regonini October 17, 2019 at 09:44

AMTRAK Military/Veteran Discount is as fake as can be. They are over priced as it is and and 10% is next to nothing and the way their tickets are set up it’s nearly impossible to be able to apply the Military/Veteran discount at all. I will drive before ever utilizing AMTRAK.

  27. Louis G Lamboley October 17, 2019 at 09:29

Thanks for nothing AMTRAK. O goody, I get to sit next to the homeless guy that smells like urine for a 10% discount.

    • Julie October 17, 2019 at 16:56

It’s disgusting that you are a veteran. Why would you talk about someone who is homeless. You’re a creep

      • Dennis montague October 21, 2019 at 07:55

Go live in Russia, china, or a few other comminus if you to talk down a veteran for speaking the truth! this just shows you what the V A thinks of their freedom.
10% isn’t much of a discount to ride faith class.
Oh I am a vet and I have never been able to afford to go first class so I don’t know what I am missing anyway.

  28. Arnold Cabral October 17, 2019 at 09:28

Veterans listen up email your Senators or Representative contract Veteran Affairs Committee passed a new Benefit Law for Disabled Veterans who is a 100 percent service connected needs a Dentist know how to G4 implants in for free because they don’t have no Dentist knows how that work for Veteran Medical Centers and haven’t not a contract with Veteran Administration.

  29. Herman Gardner October 17, 2019 at 09:05

About 3 years ago I wrote to Amtrak and asked them why did veterans have to purchase a subscription to an outfit called Veterans Advantage in order to get a 10 percent discount for retired military. using its Auto train. I got a response that my letter was sent to Amtrak Headquarters and that was the last I heard from them.

  30. Peter Brockert October 17, 2019 at 08:37

The veteran discount is not valid with Saver Fares.
The veteran discount is not valid on weekday Acela trains.
The veteran discount does not apply to non-Acela Business class, First class or sleeping accommodation. These upgrades are permitted upon payment of the full accommodation charges.
The veteran discount is not valid for travel on certain Amtrak Thruway connecting services.
The veteran discount is not valid on the Canadian portion of services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.
The veteran discount may not be combinable with other discount offers; refer to the terms and conditions for each offer.
    Additional restrictions may apply. *

    * The veteran discount is not valid for veterans.

  31. Christopher Hendrik October 17, 2019 at 08:30

According to the limitations, Veterans as in former military and retired military are offered ZERO discount.

    • Robert Horton October 17, 2019 at 09:56

You are absolutely Right! Not Good for Veterans!

  32. Beverly A Newell October 17, 2019 at 08:28

I totally agree with pevious comments. This is my first exposure to this VA supported blog and was looking forward to learning of benefits to Veterans many living on fixed income.

My experience with the Veterans benefits offered by Amtrak has left me with a few questions. First I would like to know who reads all the small print prior to posting all of the untruths in an article such as this and then posts? Or are they simply a conduit for big business to enhance their public image?

This posting contains NO benefit to Veterans and very, very limited benefits with many disclaimers for active military. Easier to post the circumstances that do honor the 10% discount.

  33. Nancy lyons October 17, 2019 at 08:26

Is your discount valid for spouses of disabled vets

  34. K R W October 17, 2019 at 07:56

You’re spot on Robbie…. Another scam to take advantage of Veterans.

  35. John E. Owens October 17, 2019 at 07:51

What type of ID, is needed, and are gust included ?

  36. ray M October 17, 2019 at 07:41

And Amtrak has been subsidized by the federal government for years otherwise they would have been gone a long time ago and it’s also why there 10% has so many restrictions of use, just another way the government thinks it knows better than you how to spend your money ie. Taxes
Maybe if Trump gets reelected he will pull the teet out of there mouth and say swim on your own or sink

    • Raul Heredia October 17, 2019 at 11:14

A draft dodging president don’t care about us veterans! Your are putting your money on a wrong horse.

      • Mangor Jooz, valid citizen October 19, 2019 at 11:29

        AMEN, AMEN.
If you check the news reports from the late 60s, early 70s Trump was lauding the Russians even in the midst of conflicts with that country. People were outraged. As to no collusion? He was already in bed with them ages ago

  37. Ron Cowher October 17, 2019 at 07:36

With all of the “not valid” restrictions placed on AMTRAK’s 10% discount, just what IS discounted ?

Maybe I’ll wander down to the train station and see if AMTRAK will let me LOOK at one of their trains for a 10% discount.
I promise not to touch anything.

  38. Joel Hoffman October 17, 2019 at 07:24

Richard, Amtrak IS offering a Veteran discount. It is a separate discount than the active duty discount description.

  39. heh October 17, 2019 at 07:22

NE Corridor…not a lot of love for the military there so AMTRAK’s so-called “discounts” don’t surprise me.

  40. Larsen Scott October 17, 2019 at 07:21

Robbie May – I agree with most of what you wrote. These “discounts” are a joke. Amtrak is just trying to make a “Gravy Train” for themselves. I don’t understand your inclusion of First Responders but I will say that if Amtrak REALLY wanted to show appreciation to Veterans they would NOT have ANY limitations. This goes right along with Sports Leagues having games where all participants wear Camo-type uniforms: they are just trying to make themselves look good which, in my opinion, is simply disgusting and insulting,

  41. Joel Hoffman October 17, 2019 at 07:20

    Read BOTH articles, R v g :

“Amtrak Passenger Discount for Military Veterans

Veterans receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains.

Use the Fare Finder at the beginning of your search on http://www.amtrak.com and select ‘Military Veteran’ for each passenger as appropriate to receive the discount.”

    Then read the restrictions…

  42. Harvey Dozier October 17, 2019 at 07:12

You write active duty and veterans, but all the ad spokes to is active duty with proper military ID.

  43. Serina October 17, 2019 at 06:36

    Amen brother! Tell it!

  44. Doyle McCaulery October 17, 2019 at 06:31

Not worth to much as i see it. Should honor American Veterans across the board for their service to service for Amtrak Seems like thanks for securing Amtrack security they dribble a little discount.

  45. Kevin Fields October 17, 2019 at 06:15

A discount, that excludes essentially everything… Yay!!!
    Useless!

  46. Scott W. Nelson October 17, 2019 at 04:01

10% off with all of the restrictions? WHOOPEE!!

  47. Jim Thames October 17, 2019 at 02:35

I agree with the above comment. We need clarification. Veterans do not have active duty ID’s. Is it only for Active duty?

    • Hank Brown October 17, 2019 at 14:54

Brother, you can get a veteran ID card check on it. No Joke, a Lowe’s home improvement

  48. Neil Van Ess October 17, 2019 at 01:24

As a Purple Heart combat wounded from Vietnam first & foremost, in my opinion…..AmTrac does not offer Veterans Discounts to Veterans PERIOD… what AmTrac is offering is a discount to ONLY to Active Military Personnel & their families.

For Am Trac edification a United States VETERAN as define under Federal code Title #38 of VA regulations… definition of under federal law, a Veteran is any person who has served honorably on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. By Federal Law Active Military personnel are not define nor classified as a Veterans. I would imagine because they have not completed there active Military Duty obligation.

But most Veterans including myself feel strongly that active duty Military Personnel should be considered Veteran because of their present sacrifices that could cost them their life to our Great Nation… like all US who are the only Veterans define by VA Title #38…. WE HAVE ALL DURING OUR SERVICE WRITTEN A BLANK CHECK TO THE (citizen & the) UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, IN AMOUNTS OF & UP TO. THAT COULD COST US (special 1% answering higher calling then themselves) OUR OWN INDIVIDUAL LIVES. Am Trac, that is what a Veterans… us & what we have done….these are the brave men & women whi have earn the truly unique distinction of being called a VETERAN, ….. so please consider removing that false, misleading, & hurtful Veterans claim of you offering Veterans Discount on your Public Service Announcement Ad.

By ALL MEANS please keep what your doing for our present day brave men and women of our Active Military Personnel (personal to me & so many many others the are Veterans too) because they truly deserve it for their service and all their personal sacrifices. Your ad should said clearly and rightfully say 10% discount for Active Military Personnel and their families.

I think it just wrong for An Trac to differentiate between Veterans who as retired Military veterans, those veterans that served out their complete military commitment honorable and then the active duty Military Personnel. But then I am used to it as a 70 year old combat wounded Veterans of Vietnam we were never treated right and neither were the 90 year old plus World War Il Veterans and of course the 80 to 90 plus Veterans of the Forgotten Korean War Veterans. Your Ad certainly continued to signify that factual disrespect.

Just a Veteran who fight for ALL Veterans as well as ALL active Military Personnel every day…
    . Godspeed

  49. Daniel Bulygo October 17, 2019 at 01:03

Amtrak should include ALL VETERANS!!! Plain and simple!!

  50. FCarter October 17, 2019 at 00:40

This is not clear on who exactly with military credentials qualifies for a discount. Whoever wrote was not a veteran themselves.

  51. David Grunzweig October 17, 2019 at 00:39

Seriously, Amtrak and everyone else who gives us a measly 10% off and ooooo first in line. F**k you. Soldiers put their F**king lives on the line for their idiot commander and chief and we get a lousy 10%. I hope you find your self in a situation where your life is on the line, and no one shows up to help. Soldiers should be getting rides/flights for free and health care should not even be the slightest concern for veterans. No, I am not at all mad how this country is run.

  52. Thurman Cobble October 17, 2019 at 00:36

Yeah, just another look good sham for the VA! It’s just a 10% discount with a lot of exceptions! To hell with the veterans! The VA doesn’t carry the diabetic medicine that doesn’t make me sick so, I have to have two Primary Care Managers! One VA and one OU Medical Center. I asked the VA if they had Metformin ER 500mg because the regular Metformin makes me sick because of having to take too much. I was told the VA pharmacy doesn’t carry it because it’s too expensive! Whoopee! The VA has me taking so many medicine pills, I feel like a walking pharmacy. I have had to have surgeries outside of the VA because of the long waiting periods to just get in to be evaluated, let alone the wait time to be scheduled for surgery. Then there’s Medicare! What a nightmare! I turned 65 in 2012 and the medical system and medical insurance has been nothing but horrible! The best thing to happen to avoid the medical nightmare after age 65 is to die at the time you age at 65!! Then there’s the big pharmacy monopoly controlled by CVS PHARMACY CORP! Outside of the VA, CVS is the only pharmacy that can issue 90-day prescriptions! Plus, CVS controls all other pharmacies and puts 30-day limits on other pharmacy’s medicines! I went to Walgreens one time to get a prescription because CVS was out of it! I asked Walgreens why just a 30-day supply when the doctor wrote the prescription for 90-days. Walgreens’ reply was,
“CVS WILL NOT ALLOW US TO FILL 90-DAY PRESCRIPTIONS, WE ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO FILL 30-DAYS PRESCRIPTIONS!!” So the VA must also be controlled by CVS!? OR — ????.
America has become really greedy and very dishonest! It seems very few people, including professionals, speak the truth these days. I walked out of a specialist’s practice several years ago because the doctor was lying to me about a medical problem I lived with for over 20-years. It seemed clear the jerk is in practice only for the money because of wanting to perform an unnecessary surgery! The Primadonna told me that, “This is the way it’s going to be!…………”. And I said, “You didn’t hear anything I said……and this is the way it is now!” I rose and walked out of the idiot’s office! That was in 2006, and I still, in 2019, haven’t needed back surgery.

  53. Steve October 17, 2019 at 00:01

I am a Veteran, I know how to hop a freight train. Long lost art, I can go most routes, whenever I want, with a real discount. Back pack carries same as Bar car and Cafe car has. No sleeping though, too dangerous.

    • Richard Lobdell October 27, 2019 at 00:04

I know a lot of veterans that are hobo’s . Best way to ride the train. Not so great in the winter though. LOL

  54. Weston Wishart October 16, 2019 at 23:47

Why publish crap like this? When you get to the bottom line it is as useless as tits on a bull!

  55. Jack M Coelho October 16, 2019 at 23:45

I am a Vietnam veteran, woops, no travel discount for the likes of me! What a sham!

  56. Harry A Jr Hudson October 16, 2019 at 23:32

Please request anyone offering a discount, benefit etc to clarify exactly who is eligible.
This is a constant problem with offers saying “veterans” but meaning active duty only! I am a combat infantry Vietnam Veteran and am never certain their definition on their offers for anything to military

  57. Ruben Gutierrez October 16, 2019 at 23:28

I appreciate those businesses that do give discounts because they really don’t have to. I am not one of those individuals that feels entitled because I served. I served because it was my calling not for the discounts, accolades and any other tangible reward.

  58. Jim Polichak October 16, 2019 at 23:25

I have a Suffolk County New York veteran ID; an I’D from my local VA hospital; and a copy of my DD-214. Also a copy of my veterans pension award letter.
Should these suffice for a discount from NYC to Boston to visit my son?
Can the train accommodate a VA provided Hancock scooter? The LIRR does.

  59. Al Gallegos October 16, 2019 at 23:19

well now that I know you do not give VETERANS the discount i will no longer be utilizing amtrax for any reason what so ever. I never used the VETERANS discount. I payed Full Fare Never Again i hope other Veterans do Like wise
    Al Gallegos

  60. Ray Bohn October 16, 2019 at 23:16

Most releases from the VA are usually confusing. I worked with veterans and active duty college students. In the beginning of the new benefits, it was a circus. Even the VA experts did not understand the program. We fought a good fight for Minnesota Guard members. The VA said they were not eligible for certain benefits, but finally agreed with our team’s interpretation. Many hours and many discussions/arguments kept us from serving others.

  61. Steven Badolato October 16, 2019 at 23:12

American Veterans should be recognized and AmTrak definitely needs to clarify their decisions and how they are to receive 10%discount in the purchase of their tickets. Many veterans carry ID’s provided by US Dept. of Veterans Affairs

  62. Linda D October 16, 2019 at 22:59

This looks like Active Duty only? How does this help Veterans?? And I suppose dependent survivors are SOL.

    • Linda D October 16, 2019 at 23:01

And if this doesn’t include Retired, then this “offer” is VERY misleading.

  63. James D Payne October 16, 2019 at 22:26

How can you not be eligible for a veteran discount as described in your offer and within the fine print that if you don’t fit a certain criteria such as active duty then your veteran status is not recognized…if you served your country in any capacity at some point you put yourself in harm’s way for your country. Does your “Veteran” status wane because you are no longer in uniform???

  64. Rick Slater October 16, 2019 at 22:22

Stop advertising for veterans when it’s not. Veterans have dd214’s if they need to id themselves.
Active duty and retired active duty have ID cards. Vets have dd214’s…

  65. Ogechi Fall October 16, 2019 at 22:07

Welp. As a veteran wbo does NOT hold an active duty id, I guess my family and I do not qualify for the discount….

  66. Maggie Lynn October 16, 2019 at 22:05

This article doesn’t mention any Veterans discounts. The article talks about discounts afforded to active duty military. Not Veterans.

Bring back the DRAFT and millennial’s will have a better understanding about our Nations Veterans. Saying discount is a joke at times no matter where you go. Ace hardware doesn’t offer Veteran discounts especially the one here in Solon, I went to the Geauga County Fair in Ohio and asked for Veteran discount and was told only Active Duty. I told the person I was Retired Military and that didn’t count either. The program, “Madam Secretary” is a disgrace to our Nation educating our mediocre children taught by our mediocre educational systems to be one sided. There are just too many single parents not teaching both sides of life either. enough said.

  68. Charles Dunn October 16, 2019 at 21:27

No veteran discount, active duty personnel only?!! Home Depot does the same thing!

    • Thomas Wheeler October 17, 2019 at 12:57

Charles, Home Depot gives a 10% discount to Vets on anything “not for construction”. All you have to do is ask and show your ID.

      • Charles Dunn October 17, 2019 at 19:38

Thanks Richard, good to know. However, as a home improvement contractor, that isn’t doing me much good. Plus, aren’t they a home improvement store!? Pitiful

      • Charles Dunn October 17, 2019 at 19:42

I’m sorry, that’s Thomas, not Richard

      • C.Y.N October 18, 2019 at 12:36

As I was paying for a refrigerator at Home Depot, the clerk noticed I was using a USAA credit card and asked, “are you a veteran?” When I said I was, he re-rang the sale with the 10% discount, which on an expensive item like that is a great deal.

      • William Hallman October 18, 2019 at 20:31

Home Depot will give the discount in some stores, and wont in other stores. Its a crap shoot. But…Lowes always gives the discount in every store. I bought a clearance item marked 80% off and they still gave me the 10% discount. Lowes also has parking spots reserved just for veterans and active.
I quit HD years ago. Lowes gets all my business now.

        • William Hallman October 18, 2019 at 20:39

My buddy (26 years Army) just re-roofed his house. Got a 30% contractor discount due to quantity and still got the 10% veteran discount at Lowes. Nothing has ever been excluded, lumber, masonry, appliances, hardware, paint, chemicals, tools. We both built our own homes from scratch. Did all wiring, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Never turned down for the discount.

    • Mika James October 19, 2019 at 11:40

Check out Lowes as well. 10% discount but there are exclusions. Then if you buy more than 1 of the same item, you only get 10% off 1 only. Check your receipts next time you shop there. When I complained about it, the clerk didn’t get what I was saying and another employee came over to check the recipt. Then I was told the register does it automatically so nothing can be done. Really? How about the times they do over-rides or price reductions on their errors? How about when they advertise ALL plants 25% off and the clerk doesnt get it that a bulb is a plant when it is already sprouting leaves in its packaging. Wow

  69. Daniel Baker October 16, 2019 at 21:21

The Amtrak description of their “veteran discount” reminds me a scene from The Jerk when Steve Martin works for a carnival and tells people what they will win if he doesn’t correctly guess their weight. The prize and the “veterans discount” are the same…. NOTHING!

  70. Grizzly Dave October 16, 2019 at 21:13

This ends up being a joke for veterans and is only a marketing ploy by Amtrak.

  71. Grant Carner October 16, 2019 at 20:55

Yes, I just checked, the discount for Veterans is the same for seniors. That’s Okay I guess, but the real issue is the junk Amtrak is, compared to, say, MOST OF ASIA AND ALL OF EUROPE. But, Amtrak prices are comparatively greater. Hmmm.

  72. jerry hinnant October 16, 2019 at 20:55

from amarilo ,texas too demoines iowa and back

  73. Michael Smith October 16, 2019 at 20:52

After reading through all the restrictions I am dumbfounded to actually find a discount for Veterans. It looks to me that you have to be active. I get more of a discount that this even touts as a senior citizen and that discount sucks.

  74. Grant Carner October 16, 2019 at 20:49

Is this discount available for service related disability veterans?

  76. Steven R Hulland October 16, 2019 at 20:31

Amtrack, a governmet qusi business that loses millions does not offer vetrans a discount. And its discount is for active duty members and their families with few real benefits as you cannot receive this low and basically worthless discount for any but the most uncomfortable medium to long distance travel. It may be good for daily commutors from say Baltimore or Quantico to DC. Of course they must be on active duty. I get much better “old people” discounts on Amtrac if I want them.
Please stop advertising such BS savings for Vetrans – it is a sham and should be criminal.

  80. Arthur Goggins Sr. October 16, 2019 at 20:10

Stop using the Veterans Discount if you cannot include all veterans. You are just using it as a sellling point. Same, shame!!

  81. Corgidog59 October 16, 2019 at 19:54

Well put Robbie May. This veteran /active duty benefit is a joke. So many restrictions. Ridiculous.

  82. Bill October 16, 2019 at 19:46

There is no point in this article. As stated in the article and above there are so many restrictions that it doesn’t make any sense to use the ‘discount’. This is also appears to be only for active duty. Many Veterans would qualify for much lower rates using AARP or similar. Ms. Lamb needs to research her articles before publishing them.

  83. Moreno October 15, 2019 at 12:55

This is just a marketing ploy to get Veterans and Military to travel by Amtrak. Here is the prof:

    What a scam!

    • ALLAN CAMPBELL October 16, 2019 at 23:10

Is this discount for all veterans or is it only for active duty military members and their families? the article above is not clear on the applicability. I am a retired E-8 with 23.5 years of service.

    • T Lozauskas October 17, 2019 at 08:55

Why not list what the veteran discount is valid with. The list would be shorter and easier to read.

  85. Jim W Kiesel October 10, 2019 at 16:43

Walgreens is not giving veterans free flu shots if they require the high dose shots. These are not covered in the agreement with Walgreen’s.

    • Joy Corley October 16, 2019 at 21:53

Jim, this is so sad. Our WWII, Korean and Vietnam vets certainly deserve the best care and they are obviously being excluded. Yes I know that they are still entitled to a free vaccine as a veteran, however with their red white and blue Medicare card they can receive the high dose vaccine for free as well.
As a health care professional and a daughter of a WWII vet, I find this agreement with Walgreens to be misleading and a slap in the face to our senior veterans

  86. Robbie May October 8, 2019 at 23:49

I am sick and tired of companies and agencies flouting their “military discount”. If one looks at the list of people eligible for exactly the same discount you will find a very long list. How is this supporting our military and first responders? I recently reviewed Amtrak’s discount for veterans and the attached restrictions make it impossible to take advantage of the discount. When is corporate America going to wake up and SUPPORT ITS VETERANS AND FIRST RESPONDERS?

    • Kelly Persich October 16, 2019 at 21:04

      Couldn’t agree with you more.

    • Chris Herman October 16, 2019 at 23:09

      Well said Robbie!

    • Dan Thomas October 16, 2019 at 23:29

Robbie; I agree with all you have stated. Companies who offer these alleged discounts are mocking us who have served with all their exemptions attached to the discount. If they don’t want to give legitimate discounts to the military and veterans, they should man up and say it. Additionally, the VA should verify these things before promoting the “generosity.” of these companies.

    • Debra Williams October 17, 2019 at 00:11

This is a JOKE!!! I signed up for Amtrak’s “military discount” program and found the restrictions very offensive. You are better off paying full price. Support for this country’s veterans, military, and first responders is horrendous.

    • K.A.M October 17, 2019 at 07:47

Robbie May, Any company, be it Amtrak, Walgreen’s, etc. are not required to offer any discount. It has gotten to the point that to many individuals think they are entitled to more than they should. It is a courtesy extended not a requirement. None of your enlistments were made with a line including “and I shall receive discounts from all companies, public and private upon my separation/retirement.”
And just an FYI, my husband is a 20+ year disabled veteran.

      • C.Y.N October 18, 2019 at 12:24

K.A.M, that’s not what Robbie May is saying. It’s not that we feel “entitled” to a discount, it’s that companies use a “military discount” as a marketing ploy to advertise how patriotic they are, but it then has so many restriction that no one can use it, or worse, you get a better deal with your AAA card.

    • Joe Jackson October 17, 2019 at 08:59

You can upgrade to full accomodation, Connecting Thruway services or Canadian services, after paying the discount on the basic fare. The Veteran’s Discount does not include families.

  87. Richard John Ringelstetter October 8, 2019 at 21:50

Amtrak is offering a discount for active duty and their dependents, NOT veterans.

    • Arthur Torazo Tom October 16, 2019 at 19:55

If you go to the website you’ll see a military veteran and active duty (they’re separate options) drop down menu option

    • TomR October 16, 2019 at 23:20

Thanks for highlighting this marketing deception.

    • Arthur Fisk October 17, 2019 at 00:23

This, not to mention many Active Duty ID cards are carried by Reserve and I.R.R. members. Unless these cards now bare some kind of identifier, how is their status verified past the ID card? Veteran status is proved by DD214 and VA ID, these forms of military ID are not referenced at all.

    • EMac October 17, 2019 at 01:34

So true! I don’t see any real military discount. There are some many restrictions it seems to me Amtrak just wants to advertise a fake support. They need to learn from the European Rail system that really offers the best deals for a far better quality service and faster trains. Shame on our rail system. We have the technology to surpass any rail system in the World.

    • Joel Hoffman October 17, 2019 at 07:27

Richard and R v g , please see my comments concerning Amtrak Veterans Discounts

    • K.A.M October 17, 2019 at 07:54

Actually, if you go to Amtrak’s website and scroll down there is indeed a veteran’s 10% discount.

    • Joe Jackson October 17, 2019 at 09:01

Veterans can upgrade to full accomodation, Connecting Thruway services or Canadian services, after paying the discount on the basic fare. The Veteran’s Discount does not include families. There are two different discounts, one for active duty and one for Veterans.

  88. R v g October 8, 2019 at 16:19

    Amtrak veteran. Discounts
Veterans and retired do NOT carry Activd Duty identification. They are VETERANS!
Please Clarify your description of what is necessary for a discount. Very confusing

    • Chris B October 16, 2019 at 20:54

Disney World does the same thing. The only way you get military discount for Disney is if you can access the commissary. That’s how they describe it.

see if you can apply for a veterans card at VA. I have a veterans ID card since I do utilize VA

    • R Dudley VC October 17, 2019 at 08:32

I received the offer in a VA News Letter and the caption reads “Amtrak offers Veteran, military member discounts” and the first line of the first paragraph starts with “Veterans can enjoy a 10% savings”. Seems clear it is a discount for Veterans but then after reading it there are so many restrictions I doubt it’s worth it and also agree with Robbie May, it’s the same discount every other group from AARP to the Zebra Lovers Club receives so they are just using this to make the public think they support Veterans and the Military when in reality they support them as much as anyone else.

    • Joe Jackson October 17, 2019 at 09:03

not sure how they know you are a veteran until you actually check veteran’s status on the Amtrak web site.
