Too often, the stories of service and sacrifice of those who’ve borne the battle are never told. When they pass away, all that remains are some faded photos, a few medals and perhaps an old uniform.

To help preserve such memories, TogetherWeServed.com, or TWS, offers a digital platform to capture a Veteran’s entire military service from boot camp to separation. Each military service page displays a Veteran’s photos, rank insignia, medals, awards, badges, patches, dates and locations of boot camp, training schools and unit assignments. The page also shows any combat or non-combat operations.

Unlimited photographs from military service can be scanned and uploaded to a personal photo album. A step-by-step self interview called “Reflections” enables Veterans to recall memories of people and events that made an important impact on their lives. The result is a rich, visual presentation of a Veteran’s entire military service, displayed in a unique shadow box format.

These shadowboxes are available online to be downloaded or printed.

Veterans can purchase a printed version of the shadow box as an 18” wide poster.

“Together We Served is proud to serve our Veterans by providing them a secure place to preserve their service history, memories and photographs,” TWS President and Founder Brian Foster said. “It is vitally important their service to our country should never be forgotten.”

Veteran service miniplaque

In addition, TWS is offering Veterans the opportunity to receive a free, versatile miniplaque of their military service. This plaque can be printed out as a desk or wall display, printed out as a business card, or displayed as an image on a mobile phone for Veteran ID or other service recognition purposes.

To create a military service page and obtain a free shadow box and or miniplaque, join TogetherWeServed.com. Veterans automatically receive a free one year premium membership to Together We Served, which provides full access to the military service pages of all 1.9 million TWS Veterans.

This will be good for a lot of people. Not for those with less than desirable service. I am very proud of my 22.5 yrs of service in the Army. Hope something can be done for the others that would make them feel better.

      Melonie,

Yes indeed it is possible to create a Shadow Box and Mini-Plaque for your grandfather. You can join Together We Served as a Family Member at the following web address. First of all, please contact Diane Short at admin@togetherweserved.com who will give you further instructions on gathering your Grandfather’s service information and how to apply it.

My question is not related to the shadow box exactly, although I think it’s a very thoughtful thing to do for veterans and I will be getting one as soon as I ask this question…
I’m a veteran but also a Copywriter. I would love to write for the VA but have no idea how to get in touch with this author or anyone in the field. If you could help put me in touch that would be awesome. I’m building a business upon separation and every helping hand I can get puts me one step closer to making it a reality. :)

Many questions: I am widow of WWII and Korea Naval aviator who stayed in Reserves for over 20 years. I have much early information but lack later data. Do I have to do all the research or can you find it on line? And as asked earlier by someone, How about secret missions? His service in the Aleutians and internment in Siberia were top secret from 1942 until 1989 and the mission to Indo China (Viet Nam) in the fall of 1950 may still be secret. Any chance of getting a complete and correct record?

    • Brian Foster August 8, 2019 at 15:57

Dell – thank you for reaching out. We have a fantastic team of volunteers on Together We Served who would be happy to assist you to create your husband’s military history with whatever information you may have.

Please contact Diane Short at admin@togetherweserved.com and she will be able to guide you through this process.

I think this is a great thing to have. I served in 2 branches of the military, Navy and National Guard. Can the shadow box reflect both of them? What do I do if I can’t remember all the decorations and medals I received?

    • Kevin Martin August 8, 2019 at 15:19

should be listed on your DD214 and/or NGB22. You can always contact NPRC also.

I am concerned about some of the negative comments indicating they feel as if you were being deceptive. Not saying it’s so, just that I’m concerned about the issues they mention, mainly Personal data and who has access to it, and is it sold or available to others. All good things to be worried about. Does your site need access to any files or Folders, Pictures, or any data in our E-Mail other than the address for E-mailing to us? Any need for Data collection not expressly typed into your forms by a member? I’m not concerned with any Social Security numbers or Bank account Checking account numbers or routing numbers. They are all public information available to anyone. Do I get tracked in any way, or have my Web History read ? What about Social Media. Are my accounts on Social Media in any way open to your purview?

Sir, happy to reassure you. TWS was established in 2003 and is run by Veterans for Veterans. TWS has a membership of over 1.9 million Veterans and active military and is administered by a staff of Veterans.

We have a registration process that establishes your basic military history which is then used to create your full military chronology to complete your Shadow Box with photos and memories. Units served in and timeframes allows our search engine to look up other members who served in the same units at the same time and provide with links to connect with them. We do not access any information other than what you elect to upload to your service profile.

Together We Served is a member supported organization, just like a military association. We don’t place advertisements on your page and we NEVER market members information to third parties as free websites do. We have Free Basic Memberships and Full Premium Memberships ($19.95 per year) which helps support our staff of Veterans and our team of programmers.

The link in the article: https://join.togetherweserved.com/va provides all VA Members complimentary Full Premium Membership for one year as accurately stated in the article.

You do not get tracked in any way. TWS is an Historical Military Archive Website created for the benefit of Veterans and their Families and not for commercial gain.

Feel free to email us at admin@togetherweserved.com if you have any further questions or concerns.

Sir, more than happy to answer your questions:

1/ Together We Served allows you to enter your military history to your Military Service Page which then allows us to cross reference to our other members military history to enable you to find people you served with. This is a very powerful feature of TWS.

2/ You provide your email address so we can email you a password reset, advise you when someone joins who was in your unit and send you our Dispatches Newsletter each month. Your cellphone number allows us to SMS a password reset code which is commonplace these days for highly secure websites.

3/ You only post what you want to post. TWS never accesses your address book or other information or carries out any tracking whatsoever. TWS is an Historical Military Archive and Search Engine.

4/ TWS is membership supported just like the American Legion and VFW. We do not place advertising on your Page which would diminish its sanctity nor do we market your information to third parties as Free websites do.

If you need further information please email us at admin@togetherweserved.com.

Dear Blog Coordinator and Fellow Veteran,
Please be careful, if the term “Sir” is used anywhere in the reply template prior to your response Many of us out here are females and lately this has become a very sensitive issue. Since all of us are getting value from these posts, and they are all very good responses, “Fellow veterans” or something similar in singlar or plural form might be a more inclusive salutation. As a female loyal veteran, I believe both my brothers and sisters deserve great respect. This response is not meant as a criticism or political statement. God bless you for your work and your service to our country.

The big question is where will the information and pictures come from? The handful of papers I received when I was discharged in ’77 were destroyed in a flood in ’81, along with both WESTPAC cruise books. All of my ribbons, souvenirs, pictures, movies and uniforms were lost a few years later due to financial issues triggered by the collapse of NCR. My discharge certificate never did show up. How would I recreate any of them at this point? Another serious question is can I recreate the records for my wife, father, brother, uncles, cousins and nephews? I can identify 17 veterans in three generations of the family, from WWII to the present, but have no records for any of them. I believe 12 of us experienced combat in some form, but would like to be able to confirm that.

  19. Daniel Elliott Hebb August 8, 2019 at 13:34

This is a scam as other respondents have noted. They suck you in for a free membership for the first year and then bilk you. Services like these and Veterans Advantage should be for free and be managed be the VA and/or DOD. Veterans have already paid the price for these given their sacrifice and years of dedicated service.

LTC Heimmel – happy to explain the economics of running an organization that has to pay its Veteran administration staff, its programming staff, extensive advertising and general running costs of a major website.

TWS is membership supported just like any military association like the American Legion and VFW. We don’t place advertising on your military history page which diminishes the sanctity of your military history nor do we rent your information to marketing companies like “free” websites do. We are not supported by the taxpayer either.

We can either exist covering our costs or we don’t exist and the valuable service we provide Veterans will never be replicated. We choose to exist LTC Heimmel.

As usual, “Free” is too good to be true.

    • Ken Kieck August 8, 2019 at 10:07

There is no monthly cost, it is $19,95 is for the entire year.

If you wish to upgrade to the 3yr or Lifetime Membership, please use the promo code TWSLES50 and be sure to APPLY it. It is a 50% off promotion.

      • Mike August 8, 2019 at 13:56

Hi Ken – I tried the promo code but got an error: “Invalid Coupon Code”. I think it may have expired or something.

      • Mike August 8, 2019 at 14:13

Hi again Ken – (my other message seems to have disappeared?)
Anyway, there was a typo in your code – use TWSLESS50 instead.

We do not market your information like free websites do and we don’t have advertising on our site which is unsightly. We normally have Free Basic Membership and Premium Paid Membership options ($19.95 per year).

However we are offering VA Members the opportunity to get Free Premium Membership for 1 Year by joining at the following link:

When has “Free” ever been not to good to be true? Free usually means it’s paid for some other way than directly out of your pocket. Were you looking for free things?

    • Brian Foster August 8, 2019 at 15:03

Mr Ranger – Happy to reassure you :-)

Join TWS at: https://join.togetherweserved.com/va. This link provided all VA Members complimentary Full Premium Membership for one year as accurately stated in the article.

Together We Served is a member supported organization, just like any military association. We don’t place advertisements on your page and we never market our members information to third parties as free websites do.

Please feel free to email us at admin@togetherweserved.com if you need further information.

How much is the box would like to request one for my 25 year’s of service.

    • Mike August 8, 2019 at 12:48

The free offer is for a “digital” shadow box. There is an option to order a hardcopy photo grade poster (18 inches wide) on the site, but I haven’t seen the price for it yet. I haven’t seen any offer for a real shadow box here.

  33. Mark Durick August 8, 2019 at 08:24

I would like to get more information on this to include costs.

    • Brian Foster August 8, 2019 at 13:24

Mark – when you join Together We Served at https://join.togetherweserved.com/va you get Free Premium Membership for one year. Your online shadow box and mini-plaque are completely free. If you wish you can order a 18″ wide high quality poster print of your shadow box for $24.95 which you can frame.

      Hope this helps.

    • Brian Foster August 9, 2019 at 11:11

Mark, creating your Shadow Box is completely free. You can order an 18″ wide high-quality Poster Print which you can frame and we have a company that does this for us for $24.95 plus shipping to your door.

You can create your Mini-Plaque for free as well. You can print this out on high-quality photo paper on your home printer as a 10 1/2″ x 6″ wall display, 7″ x 4″ desk display, as a 3 1/2″ x 2″ calling card (business card stock). It displays perfectly on your mobile phone as well.

      Hope this helps.

How do I join this site?

  35. SCAM ALERT August 8, 2019 at 08:06

This service is not free, it has a trial option which is only limited to 10 days, not 1 year like mentioned in the post. They then charge a monthly fee after the 10 day trial membership. You wont even see that this is a trial membership for 10 days until you have already filled out the applications and provided them all of your personal information including your email, date of birth, home town and etc. So now you have one more organization that has all of your personal information that could be compromised at any moment or better yet just sell it to the highest bidder. Why am I not surprised VA is providing a data collection organization as a “FREE VETERAN SERVICE”? Shame on you people for trying to take advantage of people.

Digital Shadow Box TWS [ https://vaww.blogstest.va.gov/VAntage/61723/togetherweserved-offers-digital-shadow-box/ ] Get Your Digital Shadow Box on TogetherWeServed.com

To help preserve the memories of service,Together We Served now offers a “””free””” digital shadow box to all Veterans. Each military service page displays a Veterans photos, rank insignia, medals, awards, badges, patches, dates and locations of boot camp, training schools and unit assignments.

    • DANIEL RHEAUME August 8, 2019 at 09:54

**SCAM ALERT** I agree, I’m 73 years old and did my time, at the time and place directed. some combat, some secret, some no so much. but all my time was just that,,, MY time. MY service, My sacrifices, MY choice. I don’t need a “Free HERO BOX” to show me what i accomplished, i know, i have memories that my family and I share.
My VA, is thereto provide me with medical assistance, housing assistance, education assistance and, if need be, survival assistance. In the end, they are there to assist my spouse with my final needs.
So, I’m supposed to listen to an Army “Vet” who is/was a comm. Specialist and trust him with all my personal information in the world. I don’t think so scooter, I was born at night but not last night… this is not anything about the VA…
I think i’ll keep my memories and personal information to myself thank you and good night.
Although even in this post, name and Email are mandatory.

    • Mike August 8, 2019 at 11:27

I think you need to read more carefully. It clearly states the digital “shadow box” is free. True, it doesn’t mention that you need to provide personal info in order to get it, but that doesn’t make it a scam. This kind of “free” stuff has been available for decades. I first noticed this kind of thing at the auto parts store where you could “win” a free holiday cruise just by filling out the little card with your name, address and phone number.

      • Brian Foster August 8, 2019 at 12:45

Mike – I think you misunderstand what TWS is all about. We have been serving Veterans for 16 years and have reconnected more Veterans than any other organization. TWS is run by Veterans for Veterans. You provide your service history as this drives our search engine. Your email address lets us advise you if someone has joined from your unit. Your phone number allows texting of password reset security codes.

        Hope this helps.

        • Mike August 8, 2019 at 14:00

I should have worded that better. I wasn’t trying to say TWS was like a holiday cruise, it came out wrong. I meant that there have been many free things available for a long time, just for adding your personal info.

I’ve already signed up and will be getting a life membership soon.

    • Brian Foster August 8, 2019 at 12:58

Sir – you joined at the wrong link I’m afraid. The link in the Blog is as follows: It provides Free Full membership to VA Members.

To create a military service page and obtain a free shadow box and or miniplaque, join TogetherWeServed.com (https://join.togetherweserved.com/va). Sir, I think you joined TWS at the wrong link and not the one contained in the VA Article. You should have joined at:

      https://join.togetherweserved.com/va

TWS is Member supported website, similar to a military association, with annual dues of $19.95 for Premium Membership. Free Basic Membership is Free. However we provide VA Members joining at the above link complimentary Free Premium Membership to TWS for 1 Year.

I think this is a wonderful idea and most Veterans will be honored or should be honored to post or display their service to there country. Each member who has served this country has made their family proud (I hope) and what better way to leave a reviewing legacy . I know I will work on my honored display of service. I am proud to have served and it does my heart good when ever anyone looks you in the eye and says (Thanks for Your Service, I just smile back and say your welcome and it was my honor).

  42. Dennis W. Ross August 8, 2019 at 03:19

This is a interesting project. I have a couple of questions. The first is when the free one year premium membership ends, what is the cost of membership? And, what are the other levels of membership and their cost.

My second question is in regard to another veteran. We served together except for basic training. He was my Best Man when I got married 50 years ago. That was about 8 months before we both were separated from the Army. He passed away about three years ago. I was thinking the virtual shadowbox would be great gift for his widow and children. Is my idea a possibility?

I hope I will receive answers to my questions directly to my email address. If I don’t I’ll come back to your website.

    Thank you,

    D.W. Ross

This is a wonderful idea. I’m proud of my service and so blessed to have served.

  44. Robert McConnell August 7, 2019 at 23:54

What about Shadow boxes for veterans that’s was in classified units? Such as the classified weapon units in Greece 77 to 79.. we had to sign a letter stating that we would not divulge our unit n location..

    • Brian Foster August 8, 2019 at 12:34

Kenny – Great question! You don’t have to post any Units that remain classified. Just enter your Unit History that you wish to present so that you have a keepsake of your Military History, Photos and Memories your family will enjoy knowing.

    • Cavetroll August 8, 2019 at 14:25

Sonia, The best advice I can give you comes with a question. If your broke, and that’s no shame, I’m broke now and then myself, but if your down and out, why are you living in a city to expensive for our Government Employees to live in? DC is crazy expensive and if you don’t already work for the Government directly or in some fleecing manner, then you can’t afford to live there. Move to Virginia like everybody else. Good Luck.
P.S. Go talk to a DAV rep. Maybe they can help you financially with some VA programs.

PS.S. How come the math in the box gets a little harder with each post? Lol.

  57. Russell Crabtree August 3, 2019 at 18:22

This is a great idea. I’m 75 years old and have been thinking about what I’m going to leave behind. The years in the Army were some of the most important years of my life. They were tremendously challenging, difficult and rewarding. Recently I’ve been thinking of getting my military history out of a box and displayed for others to see. Today I priced a shadow box made by a framing shop: $400 minimum. Definitely out of my reach. So stumbling across this was timely. Thank you!

  58. Daniel L Kibbee August 3, 2019 at 12:12

The shadowing is very cool. You will like to look at it in your older years. Great idea.
