Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Clayton Henson. Clayton served during the War on Terror.
Inspired to enlist with the United States Army following the September 11th terror attacks, Clayton served with 1st Squadron of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.
Clayton and his regiment were later deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On April 17, 2004 Clayton was killed in action when his convoy was ambushed in the city of Diwaniyah, Iraq.
Clayton is interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton, Texas. For actions during his service, Clayton was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He is remembered by his friends and family as having served his country with honor and pride, believing in what he fought for.
We honor his service.
Memorial Day Awareness
This month, the VA’s National Cemetery Administration is partnering with Carry the Load, a nonprofit organization that connects Americans to the sacrifices made daily by the U.S. military, Veterans, first responders and their families to commemorate the “Memorial May” awareness campaign. The VA will share the stories of service members and Veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice in “Veteran of the Day” posts leading up to Memorial Day 2019.
