#VeteranOfTheDay Marine Corps Veteran Johnnie M. Hughes

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Marine Corps Veteran Johnnie M. Hughes. Johnnie served in both Iraq and Afghanistan Campaigns.

Johnnie enlisted in the Marine Corps in December 1988 and completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., in February 1989.

From 1999 to 2002, He held the billets as a drill instructor, senior drill instructor and operations chief for Company H, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion. In February 2003, he participated in Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom I. He deployed to Iraq again from 2004-2005. Hughes then reported to the United States Naval Academy in June 2006, as the 10th Company Senior Enlisted Leader. In December 2009 Hughes was reassigned and deployed to Afghanistan from May 2010 until November 2010.

In July 2012, Sergeant Major Hughes was promoted to Sergeant Major and reported to Recruiting Station Kansas City. In April 2015, Sergeant Major Hughes reported to 3d Marine Raider Support Battalion as the sergeant major. In April 2016, Sergeant Major Hughes reported as the sergeant major to Headquarters and Support Battalion, MCB, Camp Lejeune.

Sergeant Major Hughes personal decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Johnnie Hughes retired in October, 2018.
