#BorneTheBattle 57: Sebastian Junger – Journalist, author of “Tribe”

shadow

Last night, in Los Angeles, Got Your 6 held their first of two Storytellers events of the year. The next second one will be tomorrow night in Washington D.C.. Recently, VA announced that it’s partnering with Got Your 6 to hold StorytellersX events around the nation. The Storytellers series allows Veterans to share their story in the way they want to tell it. These stories include elements of their service and their journey to where they are now and how those things are connected.

In the spirit of storytelling, we decided to invite a well experienced storyteller to the podcast. Sebastian Junger is an award winning journalist and is most recently known for his book “Tribe.” Combining history, psychology, and anthropology, Tribe explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging, and the eternal human quest for meaning. Junger suggested an idea of having Veteran town halls where Veterans could share their military experience with their community; not their friends or military peers, but their community. Thus allowing their communities to share the experience and even the burden of the wars they’ve fought in.

Junger is the first non-Veteran who isn’t the Secretary, to be on the podcast. I believe he makes a great fit with his experience in conflict zones and his longtime relationship with the military community. Junger is going to share his thoughts on storytelling and the importance of sharing your military experience with your community.

Covered in Episode 57:

  • Got Your 6 StorytellersX events
  • Interview with Author Sebastian Junger
    • Why he became a conflict-zone journalist
    • Returning home
    • Losing a colleague
    • Allowing your community to understand your experience
    •  The power of storytelling
  • #VeteranOfTheDay Army Nurse Veteran Grace Elizabeth Farley.

I seek to partner with GY6 in this venture to do more for our veterans than uttering “thank you”.
