Earlier this month, VHA hosted a Facebook Live Chat event with National Healthcare Recruitment Consultant James Marfield. James discussed tips for new grads and trainees and gave a quick overview of the hiring process. The live chat drew over 1,800 viewers and just under 100 live comments and questions. It can be viewed on the VA Careers Facebook Page.. But for now, here’s a quick recap of what you missed.
During the live chat, James answered a series of questions, then he and the VA Careers team responded to more comments after the live broadcast was over.
Many viewers showed interest in applying; a frequent question was how to apply for a position within VHA. The most straightforward way to apply for a position is to go to the VA Careers page and search for a position that resonates best with your qualifications. When you’re ready to apply, be sure you follow the instructions in the announcement, complete every step of the application (there can be a lot) and provide all the documentation requested. And when you submit, contact the POC listed in the announcement to be sure they received everything.
Another question was whether you can apply for a position without having obtained your degree yet (i.e., graduating in the next few months). As James discussed, many positions are entry-level within VA so this shouldn’t be a problem. The best way to go about applying is to reach out to a recruiter and explain your situation and go from there.
A topic that received many questions was finding the key to getting an interview. James’s best piece of advice was tailoring your resume to each position you apply for so that it’s easy to read and confirm that you meet the requirements and move on to the next step in the application process. Additionally, reaching out to a recruiter and working with them can be beneficial, too.
Be sure to check out the live chat video if you haven’t already, and thank you to those who participated. Stay tuned for other information about events and job listings. And keep an eye on our Facebook and VA Careers events pages for other opportunities to chat with VHA.
