In honor of Mother’s Day, we here at VA need your help to thank the women who have undoubtedly shaped our lives. We would like to put together a tribute honoring mom Veterans. Their service has not only shaped your life but has paved the way for fellow female service members.
Here is how you can help: Please send photos and/or a story of a woman close to you who served in the military as a mom. The photographs will be created into a Flickr set and the stories will appear on VAntage Point. With each submission, please provide name, branch of service, when they served, and what they are doing now. Please send all information to newmedia@va.gov by Thursday May 5.

My mother Linda Nelson served her country for almost 30 yrs worked her way from supply clerk, to being a Senior Chief master Arms. Growing up seeing gates open and people salute her gives me a sense of pride that can never be replaced. She now dedicates her time to help disabled veterans and VA situations, she also helps the youth in our area receive scholarships toward furthering their educations. I am proud to say I am a Navy brat and that my mom wore combat boots, she showed me the importance of strong women, Thank you mom for making me proud to be an american . Happy mothers day to all those who serve or have sons or daughter in the military.
I served in the Persian Gulf region during Desert Shield/Desert Storm as a Motor Transport Operator. At the time, my sons were 6 and 8 years old. Thank goodness for my wonderful husband – knowing he was taking care of our boys helped me more than he will ever know.
I am a Iraq war veteran. I would like to know a place a disable veteran can get some food beside the dumpster. I would really like a job
I served in the AR at the 395th CSH in Gary, IN; Sept 26, 1987 – Sept 21, 1993 as a combat medic. After an excruitiating bout with Guillan barre Syndrome, with no break in service, I transferred to Active Duty on Sept 22,1993 -Oct 25, 2000 as an avionics tech. I’ve had several jobs in human resources & career/human services. Currently, I am working/volunteering with several non-profit orgs as a career coach. HeyRhonda.com. I had 2 beautiful children while on active duty. Now I am a proud mother of three & step-mom to two.
I have lots of relatives who have served the country, unfortunately did not follow the family tradition and did not go into the army but have a high regard for all those who serve and have served the country. My thanks to all of you
I served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1974 to 1978. I was commissioned a
1st Lt. and I was honorably discharged, Captain. I began working for Miami V. A. medical center, Miami, Florida in 1986 and continue at this time. I am currently a Staff Nurse and addiction counselor in Miami, Florida, mother of three;
two sons and a daughter and grandmother of three, one boy and two girls
My mom was a WAVE. She served during WWII, I don’t know which years. Happy Mother’s day. She is 92. I also served in the Army reserves and active duty 1986-2002 plus two of my sons are in the Air Force one Air Guard and the other active duty.
I would like to recognize my daughter who was in the Army.She went in after High School and made us proud. She was sent to Korea and was there durring Desert Storm. I was in the Army Reserves and got activated and went to Ft Leonard Wood to train the troops for the war. We were in phone contact and gave each other encouragement. She is our hero for serving our country and continuing to be a GREAT FEMALE VETERAN. God bless all our VETERANS.
My mother worked in a muntions plant during the war and my wife was a nurse and a mother to two girls that she had while on active duty. My military job sent me all over the world and my wife offten was mom/dad, nurse and alone. Once I was on a remote, my wife had to back fill at a hospital in Germany and our kids were watched by friends in our church. We are both retired and enjoying life and grandkid
I served in the US Army 1981-1984. Honorably discharged as I followed my husband who took on recruiting duty.
I served In The US Army 81-84,
My Mother served in the US Army Cadet Nurse Corps. She signed up in Ohio, and trained in Florida and became a Registered Nurse. She worked in Ohio at a military hospital that served German Officer Prisoners of War. She wore a uniform, took orders from the military officers, and received no benefits from her service. Congress has had bills in the past to add them to the VA chain, but they get stuck in committees that try adding pork to them, thus killing the bill. She died some years back. No death benefit for her service in keeping people alive and healthy.
I served in the US Army from 1977-1979. I had one of my five children in-service. I now serve in the American Legion as President of West-Field Unit 48 in Beloit Wi.

I’ll bet we never see another post about Compensation or the Adjudication process.
It generates too many “negative” comments and puts the Veterans Administration in a bad light.

Jack Kelley, you’re right it is off topic. Yet you insisted on trying to insert another issue here. This section is about women who served so why not leave it at that? Yes, let’s back to the Happy Talk and honoring mothers who served!
I’m a proud Mother of 2 sons and I’m a grandmother to a 7 yr old boy. I served in the US Army from 79-02-13 to 84-08-31. I recall that when I joined and went to basic training in Ft Jackson, SC, they had to give me a rain check on my Combat Boots for they didn’t have them in a size 5 so they had to have them Custom Made especially for Me! I served mostly in Germany. Now I’m heavily involved with the American Legion I’m Jr. Vice Commander for the 5th District of Michigan and I’m my Post Adjutant and I do alot of Volunteer Related things for Veterans and the Community!
My mother, Lois Geisguth, was in the Women’s Coast Guard from 1941 to 1945. She was a YN3 and with the Stars and Bars traveling show. Some of the proudest moments of her life were the days she spent in the Coast Guard. She inspired her three sons to serve in the military. This one retired from the US Navy. She also had a grandson and granddaughter who served with honor in the Army. Mom was an inspiration to all that knew her. Her service to her country in its time of greatest need is her undying legacy.
