Applications being accepted for 2016 National Veterans Golden Age Games

Event takes place in Detroit, July 10-14

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is currently accepting applications from Veterans interested in competing in the 2016 National Veterans Golden Age Games. Veterans ages 55 and older can complete applications online at Applications will be accepted through March 4.

The 2016 National Veterans Golden Age Games take place in Detroit, Michigan, July 10-14. Nearly 800 athletes are expected to compete in the national rehabilitative multi-sport and recreation competition for senior Veterans. The event encourages participants to make physical activity a central part of their lives, and supports VA’s comprehensive recreation and rehabilitation therapy programs. Competitive events include air rifle, badminton, boccia, bowling, cycling, field, golf, horseshoes, nine ball, power walk, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis and track.

VA research and clinical experience verify that movement and exercise are important to maintaining good health, speeding recovery and improving overall quality of life. The games encourage participants to continue in local senior events in their home communities and also serve as a qualifying event for competition in the National Senior Games.
   The Detroit VA Healthcare System will host this year’s games. The Detroit VA provides care for more than 50,000 Veterans throughout Michigan.

Mike Molina

Mike Molina is a public affairs specialist with VA’s Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events. He has been a federal public affairs practitioner for nearly 20 years, including serving as public affairs officer at the Jesse Brown VA in Chicago and the Montana VA Health Care System in Helena, Montana. Mike is a Marine Corps Veteran and was an amateur boxer on the All-Marine Boxing Team while stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

    Sir/Mamm, I am vary much interested in participating in this event. I am retired with the US Army as an E-7 as an Infantryman was injured on my 3rd deployment in the middle east the Army finds me fit to return back to duty and retired on 10/22/2013. I am an alumni with the WWP and had part take with the Wheel chair basketball tournament, Water Polo, Canoe Race and the 500 mile bike ride in Colorado Springs. I am 100% Permanent Disable veteran as well. I am requesting for an application for said event as well. Thank You
