Picture your Career in the Pacific Islands

When you think of a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, do you conjure images of a tropical paradise, complete with white-sand beaches and crystal clear water? Do you picture a community that enjoys a relaxed pace and is slow to embrace continental norms? Do you see adventure and a set of challenges that are specific to a remote location? You may be surprised to learn that VA operates in locations even farther than Hawaii—including territories like American Samoa.

American Samoa is part of an island chain in the South Pacific that takes up just 76 square miles of land. An unincorporated U.S. Territory since 1900, American Samoa’s strong cultural heritage and remote location make it a unique and important place for the American government to conduct affairs. Astronauts in the Apollo program and Marines have been trained on the islands of American Samoa, and Samoans have a long history of proudly serving in the U.S. armed forces.

The Veteran population of American Samoa has served in wars since World War II. While service takes them away from the islands, many often return to their close-knit communities and others choose to take residence in the peaceful Pacific paradise. In order to provide care and treatment for these Veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs operates a clinic located on the largest island of Tutuila.

The clinic is presently recruiting for an Outpatient Psychiatrist to work in American Samoa. The ideal candidate will be a Board Certified (or eligible) Psychiatrist who is willing to embrace the unique advantages and challenges of work as a care provider on a remote island. The Psychiatrist will be a leader on a Mental Health team that includes a MH Nurse Practitioner and a Social Worker. The team evaluates, treats, and manages the unique adult outpatient population at our Outpatient Clinic and coordinates care with local and VA inpatient facilities.

Additional benefits include:

  • Paid Relocation expenses to and from the assignment

  • Participation in all Federal Government benefits including: Health Care Plan, Thrift Savings plan with a 5% match, and the VA Pension Plan
