Presidential Management Fellow/ Veteran


If you have spent any time researching hiring programs within the US Government, you will have heard of the Presidential Management Fellowship- PMF. I recently met a Veteran that has put his military experience and GI Bill to work to excel in his career.

Brian Venerick’s Bio

Brian Venerick has served as a Presidential Management Fellow-Program Analyst for Workforce Management and Consulting at Veterans Health Administration, since August 3, 2009.  

Before coming to VA, Brian worked for New Jersey Army National Guard as a Human Resource/Retention Sergeant.  Brian is currently serving his 13th year in the military with the Army Reserve as a Senior Instructor for Human Resources.  In 2006-2007, Brian served a tour of duty in Afghanistan.  

Brian graduated from Rutgers University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Anthropology.  In 2009, he graduated with his Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Nova Southeastern University.  Brian has taught public policy and administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University. 

VA is always seeking highly qualified prospects to join our workforce.  Applying on is one way to view and apply for current openings in our diverse workforce, but it is not the only way.  VA has many different internships, trainee, fellowships and residency programs for prospective employees to explore.  Below you will read about one program that can be found throughout VA, in Central Office and the more than 150 medical centers across the country, the Presidential Management Fellowship. 

The Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) was established to attract outstanding men and women to federal service from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths. Candidates should have a clear commitment to excellence, leadership and management of public policies and programs. 

To be eligible for the PMF program, you must have graduated with a master’s, law or doctoral-level degree during the current academic calendar year.  Once your application has been approved, you will be invited to an on-line assessment and an in-person assessment to determine if you will be invited to a PMF job fair in Washington, DC.   If hired by a federal agency, the PMFs are expected to complete a four – six month rotation, 80 hours of classroom training annually, as well as an individual development plan during their two-year fellowship.  After completing the two year fellowship, the PMFs can be non-competitively converted into a permanent position.  For more information visit: .

About Darren Sherrard

In May 2008, Darren Sherrard was appointed as the Associate Director of Healthcare Recruitment and Marketing Office (HRM) at Veteran Health Administration (VHA) Workforce Management and Consulting office (WMC). As Associate Director, Mr. Sherrard oversees VHA’s national recruitment marketing campaigns inclusive of television commercials, print and online media, and recruitment marketing sites. Darren served 20 years in the U.S. Army; 13 of which were spent in Recruiting. During that time, he was known for his ability to transform low performing organizations through training, motivation and ability to develop and provide needed recruitment tools.
