Age: 28 | Baltimore, Maryland
U.S. Marine Corps, Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2007-2008
Director, The 6th Branch
As a U.S. Marine Corps amphibious assault crewmember Dave Landymore rotated through Iraq and the seas of Southeast Asia, but his most important mission may be to transform one of Baltimore’s toughest neighborhoods.
While studying human geography at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Dave heard about The Sixth Branch
, a Veteran-led organization that uses the military skills of its volunteers to tackle community service projects at the local level. Now a Tillman Military Scholar
, Dave leads The Sixth Branch as the executive director.
Along with its community service component, The Sixth Branch offers a way for Veterans to reintegrate while continuing to serve together. Their ethos is simple: empowerment is a better approach than entitlement. Dave’s leadership with the organization made him realize something else—community service can be an effective way for civilians and Veterans to work together to bridge the gap
“The Sixth Branch’s secondary mission is to set an example,” Dave said. “We’re trying to change the narrative and change the conversation that America has with their Veterans.”
