VA Secretary Dr. David Shulkin visited the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis Wednesday. His visit included a meeting with Indiana governor Eric Holcomb and local leaders from the Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Benefits Administration and the National Cemetery Administration.

Shulkin discussed with leaders his vision for the agency, particularly on improving the Veterans Choice Program and encouraging partnerships between the VA and the state of Indiana, Department of Defense and the YMCA. Local VA leaders shared their concept of “Veteran Health Indiana” by expanding community clinics, increasing community engagement and building clinical partnerships to encourage more Hoosier Veterans to participate in VA healthcare.

Secretary Visit Indianapolis

VA Secretary David Shulkin is introduced to the “Veteran Sound Off Board” where Veterans are encouraged to submit ideas for improving their healthcare.

Following this meeting, Secretary Shulkin toured the medical center, visiting outpatient rehabilitation, the GI procedural unit, and the Quality, Safety and Value “mission control room” to learn more about Veteran healthcare delivery in Indianapolis. He observed the 3D biological printer that supports research and development studies into replacing tissue and performing skin grafts for Veterans.

The secretary’s final stop was at the “Veteran Sound Off Board” in the medical center’s atrium. A Veteran patient who serves on the medical center’s Patient Advisory Council talked with Shulkin on how Veterans are encouraged to submit ideas for improving their healthcare. These ideas are studied by medical center staff and the results are made available for patients and visitors to review.

The medical center leaders and staff were pleased to host Secretary Shulkin and Governor Holcomb and were proud to show the work they do to meet their commitment to Indiana Veterans.
