Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Floyd Gene Buck.
Floyd served as a Messman in the US Merchant Marines during World War II.
He grew up in Colorado, graduated from high school, and immediately enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1945.
He was pulled from basic training and put aboard the SS Denali. While he was oceangoing toward Siberia, the war ended and he returned home.
He was awarded the Pacific War Zone Bar and was honorably discharged. In 1988, the Department of Defense determined that the service of the American Merchant Marine in Oceangoing Service during the period December 7, 1941, to August 15, 1945, is considered “active duty” for the purposes of all laws administered by the VA.
