Did you know that approximately 25 percent of the Veterans VA cares for have diabetes? VA health care benefits can help Veterans and their family members living with diabetes, or those with concerns about diabetes take charge of their health through a range of diabetes prevention and care services.
On July 13, VA joined Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for a Twitter chat to answer questions from Veterans, Servicemembers and their families about diabetes prevention and care. Check out some of the questions and answers from the chat below.
DAV posted questions regarding benefits and eligibility for Veterans concerned with their health. Experts from VA provided answers to the inquiries and helped get the conversation started.
Eligibility for health care benefits varies depending on program and circumstance. VA’s MOVE! Program is free for Veterans enrolled in VA health care and offers many ways to participate. MyHealthyeVet provides information and resources for staying healthy.
The chat continued with information specific to diabetes care and prevention. Information about signs of diabetes, risk indicators for diabetes, testing and exam recommendations were favorite topics of discussion. Routine tests and exams are key to discovering what issues you may be experiencing with your diabetes.
VA offers coordinated primary-specialist team care and is a leader in medication safety.
Understanding the differences in the types of diabetes is important in managing your diabetes. Modest weight loss from a healthy diet and modest exercise are key factors for most Veterans and their family members. Highest risk patients should consult with their health care team.
