Earlier this month, the Manchester, N.H., VA medical center hosted an open house to highlight the wide range of programs and services available to Veterans in their community.

The open house supported the VA Summer of Service goals of increasing volunteer support and enhancing relationships with community partners.

Staff members from 20 VA programs provided information to almost 100 Veteran patients as well as community partners. As part of the open house, staff and volunteers raised awareness of the issue of fireworks and post traumatic stress disorder. VAMC psychologist Alicia Semiatin spearheaded the effort with the aim of raising local community awareness on the impact sudden loud noise has on combat Veterans diagnosed with PTS.

The open house isn’t the only VA Summer of Service event on the calendar this summer. Other events include a Summer Sports Clinic, which was held July 21-24 in Sunapee, N.H., and the VAMC Veterans Free Farmers Market on August 26 at the Manchester VAMC.
